  • The best bits of Wainwright's Coast to Coast (maybe I'm biased) with our new bivvy bags. I've never done a review before so here's my first - and below the spec according to the Big Agnes website:
    Total Weight:
    879g
    Packed Size:
    13 x 43cm
    Floor Area:
    1.6 m²
    Head Height:
    51cm
I had a comfy night with plenty of room, but a couple of disappointments too...
Price US$ 329.95. We paid USD 20.00 for shipping. Still waiting for Big Agnes to respond on the broken pole

You're hardier folk than I am! I once went hiking through the UK with a bivvy bag, and I found it so miserable! Admittedly, I had absolutely horrible luck with the weather -- it was, at the time, the wettest spring on record, although I'm sure that record has been broken by now -- but I just Never. Felt. Dry. In spite of my best attempts to keep the water out, everything in my pack got wet and then just seemed to stay that way forever. Things actually started to *mildew* before I was done. And while the bivvy itself didn't leak, I don't think, or at least not so badly that I could ever find a specific place where it was letting in the water, I never really felt dry inside of it either.
And yet in spite of this, every time I think about returning to your beautiful country to do some walking, I find myself thinking once again "Camping would be ideal, but ugh, I don't want to carry a tent... Hey, I know - how about a bivvy bag?!" and then once more need to remind myself that I'd vowed never, *ever* to bivvy in a non-arid climate again.
Yet here you are, admitting that you got a little wet in the night, yet still looking cheerful and hearty and game for more walking on the morrow. Kudos!

Thank you so much! How lovely to read your comments, but I’m sorry for your soggy experience. ☹️ You are, of course, absolutely right, our weather is such a huge problem. Late April and early May are usually the best times for Scotland, before the midgies start to bite. I always feel sorry for those hiking in bad weather here, and I wish wholeheartedly for it to be otherwise for overseas visitors. Yet, when the weather is good, it’s so, so beautiful. We were lucky… it didn’t rain too much. I sincerely hope that you’re never that unlucky again, and that you do experience it at its best. Very, very best of luck for the next time 🤞 Sue

It's an incredible area Sue. What's that valley at 5.30. Awe Inspiring! Good to hear you have some new bags to try out amid such wonderful landscape. The bag looked reasonable to although having tested out a Jack Wolfskin equivalent many years ago the condensation was to much. But hey that rubbish - shall I shout out what I think? No! I did that beside the Wye the other day. Infuriating. Some good history along the way though - now they left a mess to. Well, good end in the pub. All the best. Mark

Hi Mark, good to hear from you 😊 The valley at 5.30 is looking down to the village of Muker in Swaledale. Next to the river are several meadows which are left uncut all Summer & protected. It’s a riot of colour during June. Please do shout out what you think. I bloody hate litter. It seems worse post lockdown but I’ll say no more. Cheers! Sue

Nice 2 day hike Sue, that's some impressive mileage there, I did that part of the c2c last summer. The hooped bivvy looks decent, although I'd be concerned about the flimsy poles especially as you've had to order from America I imagine replacements aren't that easy to come by! Being 5 foot is definitely an advantage for squeezing in a bivvy 😁

Hi guys, just come across your channel so thought I’d check this video out first as my main love is wildcamping
I’ve never actually done a bivvy camp, I keep talking myself out of it although some of my mates prefer it,
The views are just stunning and loving the drone shot, the whole video is really presented well and it’s an easy watch,
I use the msr trail shot to filter my water and to be honest it’s a bit of a pain,
Great place to pitch btw, it’s blooming stunning !!! Bivvy looks pretty decent and easy to put up, shame about the poles and pegs, I suppose you could get sone different ones !!
12 year old single malt … now we’re talking, I’m more of a rum guy though 😂
😂😂😂 I hate people leaving their s**t, who do they think is going to clean up, I’m always picking up other peoples mess !!!!! It’s bloody infuriating
Happy I’ve stumbled across your channels guys atb Alan

Hey Alan, thanks very much! Great to hear from you, and really pleased to get some response on the litter. Sadly I think many people assume that others are just going to clear up after them 😡 The bivvy poles are proving really difficult to replace and Big Agnes very slow to respond. I do love a bivvy, but for me the weather has to be perfect! Will check out your channel, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen you on RUclips already. Very best, Sue 😊

That's a lovely route Sue with some interesting history. If I may make a polite observation - I find the Strava (?) footage a bit off-putting. Maybe a 'static' view of the route on a map would be less distracting? Other than that a really well-edited video 🤗👍The bivvy looks much better than the basic bag type or even the Rab Ridge Raider but I'll be interested to hear how robust it is considering your comments about the hoop pole and the peg.
I must get down that way some time. The thought of finishing with a pint of Taylor's Landlord is very attractive! 🍺🍺Catch up with you both soon 🥰

Thinking about buying ba 3 wire bivy for high altitude camping. I am worried that the foot box will compress my wm 0 F sleeping bag and xtherm pad 2.5 inches. 5,3 height 12 inch foot. Sleeping bag 7 inch loft.

@@FIVE-FOOTLyth hoping if I put gear at bottom of bivy and keep from sliding down my feet will have 18 inches instead of the 14 depicted in diagram. Don’t know why they made the bag so shallow seeing its name, alpine, implies colder climates and thicker equipment.

    • @FIVE-FOOTLyth
      @FIVE-FOOTLyth  6 месяцев назад +1

@@martinclennon4640 I do the same, the bag is easily big enough to put all my gear in with me, and it’s wide too. I’ve seen one tester get 2 people inside. But I’m smaller than average, and have loads of room at the foot end. The condensation has been an issue, more so with a heavy dew, however my sleeping bag is waterproof so not affected by it really, I just air it out in the sun first opportunity. I’ve also used a thick down mattress with it. Hope this helps? But I’ll have another look later this evening.
