I’ve watched a bunch of these on making nets and using a paint stick to carve a net needle is way easier than slicing up a log, shaving it off with a hatchet, and then shaving it down with a knife and then carving out all that with a knife. I’m thinking I can use a utility blade if my pocket knife isn’t sharp enough. Guess I should brush pocket knife sharpening skills!
Hi there, I am making a small net to hold items in, just for practice. I wanted to reiterate that LOVE these instructions. After a while I really got the hang of it and now I see how it’s done. Great skill! But one question is how if I started the net on a steel ring, how do I end it onto another ring? Also How would I turn this into say a net bag for carrying things? I make crocheted bags already but netting is so much faster and frankly uses a lot less material. Anyhow, just sending you kudos again for this extremely helpful and clear video. I had struggled for days trying to figure netting out and finally thanks to you I get it!
I started a net on a steel ring on a different channel, using a different technique. It was very fast and hard to follow. Then I saw this video with the many repetitions of each knotting procedure and it was so easy to follow along that I used your knotting technique on the net i has started elsewhere. It looks like a net but not sure what kind or what to use it for...thanks so much. I loved making the tools, and have made several out of different materials.
I'm suggest using a bit of sandpaper to smooth the net needle completely. Our paint sticks are usually of beech wood, so much harder to wittle using just an ordinary knife.
Kenneth Stensrud I lubricated my net shuttle (or needle )@by running it over a bar of soap because despite sanding it, the edges would catch on multistranded cordage. I believe a candle or beeswax would serve the same purpose.
Question...I've been watching some videos on making nets and people are showing a much simpler way where you just tie simple knots and don't need a tool. Is there a reason this works better? Sincerely interested because the end product looks the same.
Hi! The simpler method you've mentioned--The Overhand Knot Method--is a fine way to create a net as well. However, when utilizing a tool and gauge, all of the meshes will be exactly the same. Also, if weaving a large net, once the method from this video is mastered, it goes by much, much faster. Like most things in survival, there is room for personal preference and creative difference. If you want a larger needle and gage, DIY stores and paint stores also have 5 gal bucket stir sticks.

I tried making a net from the inner strans of paracord but the knots keep slipping. Any advice sir?
