When he played for Northampton against Coventry in 1992 I has the pleasure of being on the field with him . I was in complete awe of him(along with the other 28 guys on the pitch) He was amazingly big and strong. I go along with all comments about Buck. defienetly the top no.8 ever.
Fck U must be a tuff old bastard to then. Cool experience mate.
Buck Shelford, what a terrific player. JPR himself the ultimate competitor said that no player in the heat of battle hasnt occasionally crossed the line, but that when it happened he always apologised to the player concerned after the game. Buck gave 100% and comes over as a very genuine guy. I would want him in my team and I would be happy to share a beer with him if he wasnt.
guys a big legend, glad someone put this back on
The true blue hardman of All Black rugby. One of the greatest of all time!
@ryanthomasmccallum 1 of 2 games. He suffered a concussion from a clash of heads in the second half and blood was dripping down his face. Buck's a real beast! And after retirement he beat lymphotoma. He's a man's man. A real hero.
Buck was one of the greatest no 8's I have had the pleasure to watch and I have seen a few.
The man!!!! Much respect! Much mana! 100!!!!
What a player - its just a shame he's been overshadowed slightly and even forgotten by some because of his successor, Zinzan Brooke. Both were cracking playes, but Shelford was so much harder and more aggressive. Great tribute to one of the best ever number 8's of all time!
Zinzan had all the skills, but sometimes forgot that the job of the number 8 is to break the advantage line with three defenders hanging off you back. (Thats why Aran Pene was preferred by laurie Mains to Zinzan) Buck exceeded his own abilities at times through pride in the jersey and commitment to his team. He consistently broke other teams with the hard yards. Buck must be the rugby player that deserves the most respect of all time, and for me easily the best nr 8 I have ever seen.
*2020 STILL OUR GREATEST CAPT AND NO 8 EVERRRR!!*
300 likes, appropriate. Bold Shelford and the brave 300!
the father of the modern day haka what a gift to a nation full mana rests on his shoulders well
One of the best to have worn the Silver Fern.
My fave player. Outside of wales of course!!!!!
I met this man when i was 5 years old. He was a mountain in both his physical being and his sheer presence.
I remember feeling safe. Kinda wierd i know.
Buck Shelford introduced the new era of the All Black Haka - is thought of by friends and foes as one of the toughest men to take the field to play rugby - no greater testament to his mana and legendary status, is the fact that you feel proud to bring a sign to any stadium in the world and when a camera man focuses on you and the sign says.... "Bring Back Buck" every New Zealander know's what that means...
@Gazzabondi if hes so tough why is he punching someone from behind?
3:43 I think the only one guy had a pair while the rest took baby steps! lol thats why the line is bent in the middle haha
Lmao probably the Captain, "If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to blame. But if his orders are clear, and the soldiers disobey, then its the fault of their officers." Sun Tzu.
Hardest man of them all. WARRIOR BLOOD. Take pain, give pain.
Bring Back Buck
Loved watching you play
The best #8 ever.
Took a mate to get Buck to sign a jersey at the end of the Hong Kong 7's in 02. Said 'Buck can you sign my mates jersey, he's English' Buck looked at me hard and said 'well that's not my problem'. and promptly signed it. LOL.
Brutally tough, but brutally fit also
Yep Navy PE Training Fit. He use to have the Navy boys shaking in their boots at PE Time.
Best All lblack captain ever...period
@tamaolemaa one hitta quitta mate!!!!! He wasn't even looking. Anyone can knock someone out who isn't looking!
Bring back buck! He should join other past legends to mentor the ABs part time leading up to the world cup. He can remind the ABs how to win a world cup.
BUCK IS THE MAN ALL BOYS WHO PLAY RUGBY WILL NO HIM AS I DID WHEN PLAYING RUGBY
Shelford la più grande terza centro di tutti i tempi, il mio primo, inarrivabile modello!
Yea BRING BACK THE BIFF TOO!! I love the 1 hitter Quitter on the Lions Guy!! TKO
If you want skill? You'd go Zinny..
If you want speed? You'd go Reid..
If you want *Brutal?* You'd go *BUCK*
Almost *Mythical* definitely a *Legend* and G.O.A.T Number 8!
*Old skool* follow me or get the F**K outta my way!
Installed *fear* into his opposition.
Best Number 8 *ever!*
BIG BAD *BUCK!!* 👊😠
@grandslam1998
That's something we've been asking for over two decades now.
BRING BACK BUCK!
Real man
Truly a legend, though people would also agree Zinzan was awesome too, the man who replaced him. Back then selection was ruthless, not like today.
THE MAN!!! 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
Can you remaster the video?
Buck would be in my all time world side! Mana. Pride.
shelford was the one player who would just bulldoze over would be tacklers head on in an era where every other players would simply turned around and presented their backsides at the first sight of a terrified tackler … a tactic perfected by the pacific islanders esp Lomu and nowadays considered the norm …
Yep he only stood 6ft 2 but maybe he had a lower push off not being too tall, cause he was a menace with ball in hand n was brutal when he carried. I remember feeling so safe when Buck played
A Titan
My old man played exactly like Buck Shelford.
@yay4scotty
Pene was a solid worker, but not in the same league as Zinzan.
Laurie Mains didn't consider Zinzan to be in the TOP THREE No.8s in NZ at one stage and even preferred Jamie Joseph (another Otago player, surprise, surprise) ahead of him.
I reckon thats about the most intelligent piece of writing I've seen about Zinzan / Buck debate.
Where did you get all these clips? Really interested. . .need where and when kind of info! Greatly appreciated!
An all time great. Why did NZ drop him? The man was such a power house and a great leader.
Legend
does anyone know how to find information on where to find the video from the first 40seconds?
Bloody hell...how did he score that try on 1:26?????
@SD78 The way Aaron Pene played he deserved his place.
Buck Shelford was a great player, but he has a reputation that is better than he actually was as a rugby player. Like Francois Pienaar, his "mana" was more important than is playing ability.
He was like an earlier Toutai Kefu.
I would probably have Brooke, Dallaglio, Davies and even modern guys like Read and Parrisse ahead in terms of pure playing ability.
*Buck* would have all those uou mentioned standing to his attention
He had the offloads sorted
Yea him n Mark Graham (Kiwi's Captain) first I saw with the around the back passes ala Sonny Bill
Fck yes!
@hainlighe Yes, Bring him back
shores the pride
It wasn't Phil Davies. It was a piss-poor Neath lock called Huw Richards. Phil Davies was a great lock forward, but didn't play in 1987 WC
Look at those forwards hunting as a pack!!! Ah the days when we were hard.
Clocks by Coldplay
@tafwan i don't think it would have mattered if he squared up or not mate,it still would have ended the same,on his back.
He was quite good
Buck Shelford was the reason for the proper Haka.
Saints legend
fucken legend!!!
Go Buck...
What's this song called?
what part are you struggling with
not all people want to risk they re life for a shitty sport so if you wanna be stupid and do what this guy did go on.....
I think if you had a team of just Buck Shelford and Brian O'Driscoll, they could probably beat USA. Or at least it would be a close match.
what do you mean pity he was a kiwi?
gotta love the 80's porn star stashe at 2:32
Bring back Buck
1 punch knock down and you're out of here. Nothing like a bit of forward pack justice
@bwalsh896 "Clocks" by Coldplay.
@pyrobryan almost, taped the sack up at half time, then when he got his teeth knocked out played on a we bit more thn had to come off, i think its like only 1 of 3 games he never finished when playing for the AB's
who would win out of buck and jonah
Buck Shelford and Coldplay??
Not a fan of Coldplay
But this 100% suits
Thank god he didn't ruin it with gaybo techno music
thumbs up if 9gag brought you here
@yay4scotty
Laurie Mains prefered Aaron Pene because Aaron Pene played for Otago.
Mike Brewer was another of Laurie's 'special boys'. Look what happened with the Liam Barry debacle in England.
At what point did I say that I wanted to do this? Even the least manly of these guys is probably 10 times the man I am. I wouldn't last 5 minutes with them.
2.06 Knocked that fool outm with one punch
i fucking loved this bloke NO ONE TOUGHER, pity he was a kiwi
Kei a koe te rangatia e Buck, AE
2.00 - HAHAHAHAHAAHA Welshie got sent to sleep in a hurry
Yes, by a cowardly punch from his blind-side.
better music wouldve helped
fcking Coldplay....really?!
Norman No - To answer your question.......maybe it was because the Coward who initiated the fight actually Blindsided the player he hit first? If a player does that then......he deserves whatever he gets!!!!
Buck is a hard man yes, but he never hit anyone from behind who didn't first do that exact same thing to another player... in that case ........all gloves are off!!!!!
We reap what we sow my friend .............
As soon as I got to "you have no idea ....." , I stopped reading.
Your not worth all I've got .... .
The End.
Fine talent; sadly typifies the violence that NZ rugby still suffers from today - see the horrific injuries given to Gfosso of France. Watch Shelford punch the Welsh no.5 from his blind side (and NOT get sent off!!); cowardly as well as vicious.
NZ Rugby doesn't suffer from violence today, just a hint of illegal unnecessary violence and your off the field, those days are long gone!
I do love self-righteous pricks that look only through one eye.
The Welshman he smacked, Huw Richards, had attacked Gary Whetton when he had his head down. Shelford sorted him out. The ref left Shelford on and sent Richards off because it was understood, he got what he deserved.
Justice.
So it was wrong for Richards to hit Whetton when he wasn't looking, but okay for Shelford to come up from behind Richards and hit him with a sucker-punch. So Shelford and not the ref decides what was legal and illegal.
Remind us again in which country the World Cup was being held. Coincidence? I think not.
And for what it's worth I admired Shelford for the fine player he was, but not for that punch! @@keithmoon8838
Lawrence Dallaglio was better ....
..at sniffing cocaine
budwhite1 at sniffing his arse!
He was ; and Scotty Q at his peak........
@@clt242fg😂😂😂
Gary Teichmann was better .......
Yea BRING BACK THE BIFF TOO!! I love the 1 hitter Quitter on the Lions Guy!! TKO
What is this song??
