    When he played for Northampton against Coventry in 1992 I has the pleasure of being on the field with him . I was in complete awe of him(along with the other 28 guys on the pitch) He was amazingly big and strong. I go along with all comments about Buck. defienetly the top no.8 ever.

    Buck Shelford, what a terrific player. JPR himself the ultimate competitor said that no player in the heat of battle hasnt occasionally crossed the line, but that when it happened he always apologised to the player concerned after the game. Buck gave 100% and comes over as a very genuine guy. I would want him in my team and I would be happy to share a beer with him if he wasnt.

    @ryanthomasmccallum 1 of 2 games. He suffered a concussion from a clash of heads in the second half and blood was dripping down his face. Buck's a real beast! And after retirement he beat lymphotoma. He's a man's man. A real hero.

    What a player - its just a shame he's been overshadowed slightly and even forgotten by some because of his successor, Zinzan Brooke. Both were cracking playes, but Shelford was so much harder and more aggressive. Great tribute to one of the best ever number 8's of all time!

  • @yay4scotty
    @yay4scotty 14 лет назад +1

    Zinzan had all the skills, but sometimes forgot that the job of the number 8 is to break the advantage line with three defenders hanging off you back. (Thats why Aran Pene was preferred by laurie Mains to Zinzan) Buck exceeded his own abilities at times through pride in the jersey and commitment to his team. He consistently broke other teams with the hard yards. Buck must be the rugby player that deserves the most respect of all time, and for me easily the best nr 8 I have ever seen.

    Buck Shelford introduced the new era of the All Black Haka - is thought of by friends and foes as one of the toughest men to take the field to play rugby - no greater testament to his mana and legendary status, is the fact that you feel proud to bring a sign to any stadium in the world and when a camera man focuses on you and the sign says.... "Bring Back Buck" every New Zealander know's what that means...

    shelford was the one player who would just bulldoze over would be tacklers head on in an era where every other players would simply turned around and presented their backsides at the first sight of a terrified tackler … a tactic perfected by the pacific islanders esp Lomu and nowadays considered the norm …

    Pene was a solid worker, but not in the same league as Zinzan.
    Laurie Mains didn't consider Zinzan to be in the TOP THREE No.8s in NZ at one stage and even preferred Jamie Joseph (another Otago player, surprise, surprise) ahead of him.

    Buck Shelford was a great player, but he has a reputation that is better than he actually was as a rugby player. Like Francois Pienaar, his "mana" was more important than is playing ability.
    He was like an earlier Toutai Kefu.
    I would probably have Brooke, Dallaglio, Davies and even modern guys like Read and Parrisse ahead in terms of pure playing ability.

    Fine talent; sadly typifies the violence that NZ rugby still suffers from today - see the horrific injuries given to Gfosso of France. Watch Shelford punch the Welsh no.5 from his blind side (and NOT get sent off!!); cowardly as well as vicious.

    • @floydkingi4364

      I do love self-righteous pricks that look only through one eye.
      The Welshman he smacked, Huw Richards, had attacked Gary Whetton when he had his head down. Shelford sorted him out. The ref left Shelford on and sent Richards off because it was understood, he got what he deserved.
      Justice.

    • @garethdavies2538
      @garethdavies2538 10 месяцев назад

      So it was wrong for Richards to hit Whetton when he wasn't looking, but okay for Shelford to come up from behind Richards and hit him with a sucker-punch. So Shelford and not the ref decides what was legal and illegal.
      Remind us again in which country the World Cup was being held. Coincidence? I think not.
      And for what it's worth I admired Shelford for the fine player he was, but not for that punch! @@keithmoon8838
