  • Divorce scene
Don and Betty finally decide to divorce and attempt to tell the children. A really sad scene. Enjoy.
I own nothing, all clips belong to Lionsgate.
The video is just for entertainment.

I am far from liking Betty, and agree that she isn't mom of the year! But what Don did to Betty was worse than what she did to him. He cheated (first, and more than her), he lied, he made her feel like a child, spied on her through her psychiatrist, got mad at her when his boss pawed her, and just generally very rarely considered her feelings. Betty struck me as a deeply unhappy woman. I think this unhappiness is what affects her relationship with the kids, and Don's partly to blame for that.

I definitely agree. I think deep down Betty isn't a bad person at all, she would be far from that. I think her treating her children badly was only situational (but it doesn't make it anything less to the children)

Betty never should have married Don. Her mother brainwashed her into thinking she was a good little housewife but the truth is she wanted a career and life beyond home. She was happy when a model and living in manhatten. Thats where she should have been and had kids and got married later on if she wanted to. She was almost bought up by Don who managed to buy her into being his wife with gifts like the fur coat she mentioned in season 1. She was just a girl of 23 or 24 who wanted to be happy and mistakenly thought a housewife was her best option as he mother told her so when her best option was continue working the way she loved

Don is a flawed individual who had a terrible childhood. I am surprised he even tried to live the American Dream with a family of his own. He was raised by wolves in a whore house. Betty knew he was from a poor up bringing because the way he handled money before they were married. If she would have asked him about his engineering degree and college his lie would have revealed itself before the marriage. She lied to herself because she wanted the pretty boy who was upwardly mobile, rich, and tall. I’m sure she was approached numerous times by the Poindexters, Joe Footballers, and Richie Riches at college and she turned them all down. She wanted the Chad (bad boy) and bagged him. Then she took his house kids and his money and monkey branched to a rich politician who she could dictate and chuckle. Hypergamy at its best. I don’t think anything worked out to well for either of them after the divorce. He has a mental breakdown in California and she dies of lung cancer.
If you are Tiger Woods, Colby, Arnold Swartzenager etc there will be bus loads of Swedish bikini models throwing themselves at you. Don Draper had that same problem but was raised in a whore house making it worse. The Swedish models don’t seem to throw themselves at the forklift driver at Home Depot. I guess lumber isn’t sexy. Bill Burr.

You know, I think Sally catching Don cheating on Meagan was probably the best thing for her. She completely idolized her father but seeing him for who he really was gave her the chance to better understand Betty and to see how things in the world really are. I know it was traumatic but my best guess is that as she got older, she would appreciate everything both her parents did for her (she even reconciled with both of them by the end of the series) and she certainly wouldn't be as naïve as Betty was.

This scene is just tragically excellent. It really does such a good job of showing who the real losers are in every divorce: the kids. I've had friends whose parents have gone through divorces and it absolutely wrecked their lives. They went from being the poster children for success at their respective prep schools to becoming dismal failures. I think so much of it comes from the fact that, inevitably, the children blame themselves somehow for a divorce. Being someone who has never experienced it, I can't say why that is, but I've seen it to be true all the same.

Bearded Pete I think tried to be a good father but his demons wouldn’t let him. I lot of times he would let his kids alone for work or woman, but when he was with them he was a good dad. And he was always fair with them, never hit any of them (especially because of what he had being through was a kid).
Betty on the hand, she was always there but she was mean. She confused being hard line with being mean, especially with Sally. For instance, when Sally cut her own hair and Betty slapped her. Kids do those things.
So Don was a bad parent for not being present enough and Betty because she didn’t treat them well.

I'm five years younger than Sally, she could have been my older sister. My parents never divorced (might not have been a bad arrangement, sad to say) but I can remember how my father would sit me and my brother down for a talk in the bedroom. This would be to say that we were moving again to another state. It was made into a somber, solemn occasion with a speech from my father. This scene reminds me of my past and Don even looks like my father. Also like Don my father had no business being a parent. The only thing here that doesn't resonate with me is that if my father and mother separated I would never have run to my father saying I didn't want him to go. It was always a relief when he wasn't around. A remarkable scene here: I didn't quite have it in my own life but I can feel the believability.

During the '60's, getting a divorce was so scandalous, you wouldn't do it even if your husband was a womaniser. So by the standards of the time, I'd say Betty was in the wrong. She should have told him how it was going to be, no sharing a bed, no physical affection, and an equal partnership. They'd sleep in seperate rooms but live under the same roof to raise their children together, and ensure their children percieved them, if not as a loving couple, then as a united team playing for the same goal, with mutual respect for one another as mother and father of their children.
