Okay so, the fell dragon from awakening and echoes(grima) isnt a real fell dragon(grima is also the only fell dragon mentioned as hes called THE fell dragon not A fell dragon) they were apparently made from alchemy so that in of itself immediately destroys the theory of engage being in the same world as echoes and awakening(though awakening and echoes take place on different continents) engage, fates, sacred stones and three houses arent connected to other fire emblem games, so engage is probably in the same kind of situation as heroes is Edit: if ive gotten anything wrong by all means feel free to correct me

I have very mixed feelings about the tone and writing of this game so far, but the gameplay? *chef’s kiss* It really feels like Lumera as a boss is meant to be a warning of what will likely come later in the story, and that you need to stay on your toes and be prepared for the unexpected; the fact you’re initially shown her range only for her to Engage and throw expectations off once you enter it, making even Vander vulnerable (and trapping anyone thinking he can just draw out and tank) is a pretty solid indicator of this. And though you get Game Over if Alear is beaten here, even the game makes it clear they aren’t DYING here… It’s like an early taste of the potential you may deal with I’m guessing (having not played myself).
Yep it's a great way to tutorial without tutorializing. There's a few instances more of this coming up in future episodes that I really respect from the game designers. They tell you without telling you with the setups they orchestrated.
Been waiting to watch this on your channel. Unlike 3Houses I didn't pick this up on release day simply because I'm still skeptical. But depending on what I see here I may change my mind.
I was super meh on this (really weird to not have the game when I have nearly 1000 hours in 3H) but of course watching people play it has gotten me far more hype. It also helps that the designs look much better in 2D (another reason I'm sad they ditched the 2D portraits for this game). Excited for this playthrough!! Also yeah I pretty much always go with girl characters but male Alear looks so much better lmao. And I played as female BYLETH with her design most of the time, so that truly says something
I do truly think that the visuals are way better in this than 3 houses. Visuals being separate from some character designs that I think are absurd. And the gameplay is great so far (I'm in Ch. 4 right now) as it always is. You can always count on the gameplay being fun even when the writing isn't (looking at you Fates).

I just finished recording Chapter 5 and so far, the gameplay rocks and I'm loving the new intricacies introduced into the battles, it's very fun to explore the mechanics. The writing..... it's mediocre at best so far. Truly not special at all. The art style is growing on me with the exception of some of the more outlandish designs (Alear and a certain princess with a bell for a dress come to mind.... oh and I hate mascot characters.)

I'm so excited for this! Sadly I found your channel too late to have seen your Three Houses playthrough when it came out, but hey maybe someday I'll have the time to catch up on those 300 hours of playtime xD Some of the designs on this will definitely take some getting used to for me (like Alear who looks like someone chucked him into random paint jars) but if the game is fun like it's predecessor was, I sure as hell won't let that get to me. And hey, it's always awesome to be able to delve into a new Fire Emblem game. I'm also kind of surprised you chose male Alear, since I thought you'd take female given your Three Houses history, but hey I don't mind at all xD So cool to have a voiced protagonist as well. I don't mind silent protagonists, some of my favourite ones are actually silent protagonists. But giving your protagonist voiced lines just makes them so much better in my opinion :)
In Chapter 4 now and the gameplay is super fun so far. The writing isn't up to my standards but it still has time to impress me. The bottom line is that I'm having a good time.
Well, after seeing this and playing it myself I still don't know how to respond to the story considering it's still early in the game. Gameplay and graphics look very smooth and fluid. and i like the character design. Although I still have to get used to seeing Alear's hair color which bothers me a bit. Framme is very Moe and Alear's mom is a typical anime mom. But I'll still be looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds while relaxing playing the game myself and enjoying your Playthrough.
It's certainly predictable and tropey so far up to Chapter 4 but the gameplay is fun and solid as FE always is. I still hope the writing gets more interesting but we always have the solid mechanics if not I suppose. Some of the designs really work for me and others I really hate so it's been fun to play and react to the duality of these absurd designs.
@@AnalogVernacular The story is pretty average for me, but holy heckballs, the support conversations are straight up horribly boring. The combat is fortunately pretty enjoyable though.
Your playthough shine because not only do you read the whole dialogue but also do redo and allow some mistake and grow. Other games I have seen just skip it and not read the text sucks for me since I am a slow reader and take time to immerse myself. Looking forward to FE playthrough again.
i've only started playing fire emblem with 3 houses and was very excited for this one. i could get past the design decisions, the writing however is somewhat lacking, especially compared to 3 houses, which was a lot more grounded in its theme. the gameplay though is very fun and is carrying my interest in continuing to play this
there is also a chance that i find some of the story decisions or writing a bit too much, because i'm 35 and it seems to be geared towards a younger audience
@@mld-Drake yeah. In any other genre itd bother me but for turn based strat, gameplay is on the low end 90 percent of what i care about. And another 5 percent is music. Character design and story do not mean very much to me
34:02 No shame in showing your interests. 49:45 Not likely. I wish, but that ship is too far out at see to be seen considering how much this man is so rigid on being a dutiful servant.. Unless rule 34 proves true, she's likely stayed single for that 100 year. Oof btw, that frustration got to be through the roof. Im happy to be proven wrong thou. And Sombron. A new fell dragon. Im curious to see what this entails. We Know that Awakening's (And echos) Fell dragon is Grima and he was an artificial dragon human Hybrid with loads of mad scientist shit even earlier in the timeline involving the war between most non divine dragons. And that in Echo's the party seals him away until he reappears in awakening. (Hopefully the ending where he's destroyed for good is the canon one) and that basically lead to 3 split timelines (Grima wins, grima is defeated and another where its like he never existed). And we know that the grima in the bad timeline is gone cuz he went to the past, so one world is rebuilding from a wasteland. (they got the short end of the stick) I wonder What lead to Sombron's creation and Engage's place in the Fire emblem multiverse. (Cuz we know that Fates is in another universe where dragons from other worlds used the dragon gates to populate it and rule over it more closely. alternate worlds are a thing)
Okay, so far it's less bad than I feared on the back of that infamous initial trailer. It's definitely way too Awakening/Fates-y for my taste, as I much prefer the Tellius games or even 3 Houses. And I think the whole divine dragon vs fell dragon is just SO OVERDONE, Intelligent Systems, PLEASE... 😅 That said, it is FE, I love FE, so I'll likely love this as well. The main character's hair colour is way less offensive in game (but still offensively loud in the fully animated cutscenes - and the kid looks at least 5 years younger in those?). I think what I'm more upset about are these two stupid crossing hair strands in the middle of his face. It's very frustrating to look at 🙃 But I shall have to cope. And yeah, the mum - don't feel too bad about your initial reaction, they definitely focused the camera on her boobs just that moment too long fully on purpose.
Awakening is a masterpiece and I'll hear nothing against it ;). Fates not so much, Fates is the real stinker ha ha. I shudder when people lump those two together like they are the same ha ha. I want the series to lean more into the artstyle and writing style of Echoes SoV, Tellius and Three Houses though. They feel more grounded and the writing is more intriguing to me. I'm also hoping for an exhoes style re-release of the Tellius stuff.
@@AnalogVernacular oh gosh, I meant vibes, not quality!! Quality wise Awakening and Fates couldn't be further apart. Hard agree with your second point.
Looks fun but I’m not sold on the story, most of the character designs, or the cheezyness of some of the cutscenes and animations lol. Ima give it a chance but I would have loved to see an entirely new game (all new characters) focused on a unique plot
Yep same VA I believe. I haven't confirmed but I even said during the episode that she sounds like Morgana from Persona 5. (don't tell anyone but at that moment I was brainfarting Sothis' name for some reason.)
I thought yo we’re gonna finish 3 hopes before starting the new fire emblem game but i your choice. I don’t think I will play this game the ring mechanics makes me feel that the main roast is going to lose importance, and also the designs are a bit weird for me. So I will be waiting for the next main Fire emblem game and not a fan service one, after all I only played 3 hopes because I wanted to try a warrior game for the first time.
Absolutely not, the plan was always to pause three hopes when this came out. I'm not choosing Warriors over an actual mainline FE. And as someone who dislikes FE Fates for what appears to be similar reasons you don't want to play this one, I will just remind you that Fates had one of the best gameplay loops in the series and was fun as hell to play (you just had to ignore every bit of writing). So I'm not discounting this one, I know I will have a good time even if it isn't what I wish the series to be.
@@AnalogVernacular I don’t dislike fate the the game what I am saying is that I don’t want others characters of fire emblem to steal the protagonism from the main roast. And don’t worry I am not saying to play the other game is that I didn’t remember how were things
I don't think I understand what you are saying with the protagonist and main roast. But I do understand not liking some of these character designs ha ha, some of them are waaay too absurd.
Did they mean main ROSTER, not roast? If they’re referring to concerns of the characters original to Engage being overshadowed by the Emblems, I can understand that…
I hate mobile and gacha of any kind so no. But yeah it seems like the success of that mobile stuff may be what leads this series down the wrong route..... That being said I'm having a great time with the gameplay while the writing is subpar.
I'm kind of at the same place. I do think i will enjoy this game more in the end though. I think Three houses are more interesting at the start. But once you played through it once it kind of got abit stale. Since it had alot of busy work at the monastary that was not that fun to repeat.
@@lucohanlon9158 I like the gameplay. Skirmishes are a nice touch, the Arena is nice once you have access to it. And the way they did the blacksmith here is better than Three Houses imo. The story just ain't it for me or the way the characters 'engage' with each other. I'm on Chapter eight now, the point in which reviewers couldn't elaborate pass. So once I get off work and get pass chapter 8, I'll see how I feel about it.
One thing I will say is that the male MC voice acting is much much worse then the female MC. Laura Stahl did the female Alear and she's a top tier voice actor.
I personally disagree, I think the tech, animations, and everything are far superior in this game, it might just be the style you don't like cause technically it's way better and the battle animations are more intricate which was a complaint I had about three houses. None of the special abilities had cool animations, this one definitely does. Respect your opinion though I just don't see it the same way.
@@AnalogVernacular I agree from the animations perspective...in fact that crit was pretty badass. However, the top down animation to me looks less detailed than the previous game, but I may just be misremembering. Having said that, I do strongly feel that based on what the Switch is capable of, the top down graphics/style could certainly be improved.
@@AnalogVernacular Yeah, Three Houses is a completely different style. I personally prefer FETH even though this one is definitely better in regards to much of the animation and some of the backgrounds.

(they got the short end of the stick)
I wonder What lead to Sombron's creation and Engage's place in the Fire emblem multiverse.
(Cuz we know that Fates is in another universe where dragons from other worlds used the dragon gates to populate it and rule over it more closely. alternate worlds are a thing)
this game is looking to be alright. only thing not hitting early on is the protagonist look. the red and blue hair is not going down well with me
Yup there are several designs that are 1-3 steps too overdone.
Do you need to know anything about FE Awakening and Echoes to play this game?
Nope.
Yes, save every last one of them
Looks fun but I’m not sold on the story, most of the character designs, or the cheezyness of some of the cutscenes and animations lol. Ima give it a chance but I would have loved to see an entirely new game (all new characters) focused on a unique plot
Let's goooo
HYYYYPE!
34:01 😂😂😂😂
mommy
Is it me or Framme sounds like Sothis?, If so, im digging it
Yep same VA I believe. I haven't confirmed but I even said during the episode that she sounds like Morgana from Persona 5. (don't tell anyone but at that moment I was brainfarting Sothis' name for some reason.)
@@AnalogVernacular It's not the same VA but they do sound super similar. Clanne's is indeed Deku's VA though haha
I just checked, Framme is not voiced by Cassandra Lee Morris (Sothis). But I think another character we will meet is.
@@AnalogVernacular apparently she's not in this game, making it the one JRPG ever she has not appeared in, lol
@@AnalogVernacular Thats a shame, still digging the voice though
Thanks for telling me they've smashed, now I can't take some of the dialogues seriously.
ha ha that's not why you can't take it seriously ha ha
If they’re referring to concerns of the characters original to Engage being overshadowed by the Emblems, I can understand that…
@@borjankosarac3645 Yup probably that, makes sense, thanks.
44:10 so the bad guy is a dragon lich? cool.
is the bad guy's vc shido's vc?
Have you ever played FEH, because it might explain a lot.
I hate mobile and gacha of any kind so no. But yeah it seems like the success of that mobile stuff may be what leads this series down the wrong route.....
That being said I'm having a great time with the gameplay while the writing is subpar.
@@AnalogVernacular no worries, watching you play it makes me want to get it.
The style kinda reminds me of Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Yeah I can see that a bit for sure.
I really hate all the hero worship and the protagonist's hair, but the gameplay and animation look very competent so far.
It absolutely runs better than 3 houses ha ha.
Jealous.😢 cant afford it tell next month
Sorry to hear that, but when you do get it it will be all the sweeter with anticipation.
First battle after you are awake and you run???? Bruh lol
I'd do the same tho ha ha
DEKUUUUUU
You can't not hear it! ha ha
I'm on Chapter Five and I'm not liking it as much as Three Houses. I'll save why I dislike it for later in your playthrough.
I'm kind of at the same place. I do think i will enjoy this game more in the end though. I think Three houses are more interesting at the start. But once you played through it once it kind of got abit stale. Since it had alot of busy work at the monastary that was not that fun to repeat.
Yeah I’m on chapter 5 also and so far it’s just not doing it for me personally
@@lucohanlon9158 I like the gameplay. Skirmishes are a nice touch, the Arena is nice once you have access to it. And the way they did the blacksmith here is better than Three Houses imo. The story just ain't it for me or the way the characters 'engage' with each other. I'm on Chapter eight now, the point in which reviewers couldn't elaborate pass. So once I get off work and get pass chapter 8, I'll see how I feel about it.
What's the point of this "exploration", when you're just running around in an empty box of 10x10, surrounded by invisible walls?
Anyone wanna relay ?
The protagonist’s hair design is bad in a generically weird, excessively vivid yet boring way.
Overdone Clothes Design +Bland Face/Hair Design + Garish Color = Alear
One thing I will say is that the male MC voice acting is much much worse then the female MC. Laura Stahl did the female Alear and she's a top tier voice actor.
I have no issues with VA in this game, just the writing.
Why are the battle graphics so bad...don't know why it feels like Three Houses looked better
@@bentubean I don't play with battle animations off unless I'm replaying a map so I experience those almost never ha ha.
Weird, Alear mom looks way younger than him.
Divine Dragon's age VERY gracefully.
