  • I love the challenge of growing tropicals in the garden. It feels avant garde, particularly in this zone 5b cold climate. I'm not supposed to have Brugmansia or bananas but I do and I love what they bring to the garden. They're dramatic with their big leaves and giant flowers. And can one not appreciate that?!
But I nearly killed my beloved Brugmansia this summer by breaking one of the Cardinal rules of container gardening. Not intentionally, but watch and you'll see just how dramatic brugmansia can be when she's not happy...
Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

I have an Angels trumpet about the same size and color as yours. I also over winter in the basement. She’s had a rough summer with spider mites but is blooming. I took a start from her which is now 3 years old and 4’ tall and has never bloomed. It leafs out beautifully each year but never flowers. I care for both the mother and daughter plants the same. Would love to hear any ideas you may have as to why it doesn’t flower.

Hmmm, I wonder if it’s a nitrogen issue. Too much will encourage plenty of healthy leaves but no flowers. Have you tried a fertilizer with a higher phosphorus number than nitrogen?

Really wished you wore gloves, even gauntlet gloves while cutting this plant. You are aware how dangerous it is because you said not good to have if you gave kids and pets. The sap could have gotten on you and poisoned you!!!

You're right! Gloves are a good thing to wear when working with brugmansia. While the sap can be a skin irritant. the greatest danger is from ingestion.
