  • John Nicks is a legendary figure skating coach and former pair skater. With his sister, Jennifer Nicks, he is the 1953 World champion. As a coach, his skating pupils have included Peggy Fleming, JoJo Starbuck and Ken Shelley, Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner, Tiffany Chin, Kristi Yamaguchi and Rudy Galindo, Christopher Bowman, Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, Sasha Cohen, Rory Flack and Ashley Wagner. We had to interview Mister Nicks, who at 91 years old, is planning to run a 5k in April and still shares his knowledge with students on and off the ice.

This was wonderful thank you! Mr. Nicks is a legend and Sasha is still my favourite female skater. At the 2010 US Nationals you could see the relationship between them. I always remember “stay on your feet” before Sasha skated.

I can't believe he's 92. He looks incredible for his age. And preparing for a 5K? He's way more active than me lol He also has a great sense of humor. Sharp as a tack
As much as I dislike Eteri, she would have had Sasha drilling programs and landing the quad. Look how she has been able to make Daria consistent after she was a Sasha-like mess last season. Sasha also had an excellent rotating position that Eteri would have loved. I can't imagine Sasha with Daniil's choreography, though. Yuck

@@TheSkatingLesson What did you think of Phil Hersh Tweeting that Valieva's lp is the best use of Bolero since Torvill & Dean? I consider Phil to be pretty elitist, and I know he loves opera and considers himself to be extremely cultured, so I found that hilarious. I often think he cares more about the technical side of the sport and is a sucker for anyone who is technically brilliant. He really seems to be on the Eteri bandwagon.

Mr. Nicks... I may be wrong and I apologize if I don't know, but have you thought about writing it an autobiography? It would be wonderful to get your thoughts down on paper with your British rye humor and your infinite skating knowledge. Anything that happened in the last 70 years of skating you were there for the personal perspective from the 1961 plane crash to Coaching Sasha at a home Olympics ( for her). Tai and Randy... Galindo / Yamaguchi... Kuchiki and Sand... Your pair knowledge has been an international treasure.... Thank You Mr Nicks.☺️

Little story... I was coached by Jan Prasnewski (who passed away last year), who was coached by Mr. Nicks back in England in the 60s or 70s. I remember seeing Mr. Nicks' name listed under the bio of my coach, but didn't know who he was until Sasha Cohen came on the scene in 99/00. I was 13 at the time and starting to take skating more seriously. In 2002, I called and spoke with Mr. Nicks, told him my back-story and asked if he would be willing to coach me if I came to Aliso Viejo. He said he would, though ultimately I decided to stay.
Mr. Nicks was very kind and receptive. I always remembered that about him.

CB: Now, now, now, I didn’t create that story. It happened and I wrote about it. I wrote that Sasha was getting in Michelle’s way, and turned it into a funny (I hope), cynical (at times) and pointed (at other times)
column. Four or five other reporters wrote the same news for their newspapers. Michelle said the near-collisions distracted her. And on and on… It was news, pure and simple. People seem to forget that this was one column I wrote, one of - what? - about 25 this year alone on figure skating. It got a lot of attention, and I hear the internet went wild, but I don’t control that. I just did my job and wrote a column on something I thought was very interesting. And I was not the only journalist who felt that way.

I’d almost venture to say Sasha had/has undiagnosed adhd. She’s impulsive, has difficulty concentrating, requires regimen, and is super creative. Sasha may not have taken a lot of ballet, but she did have a gymnastics background and practiced Pilates. I recall her mom being a ballerina, so I wonder if she had any help at home with that.
