  • How to Change a Car Battery and not Lose the Radio Settings, Home DIY
    First the health and safety bit.
    This video is not for children.
    Take care when handling a car battery as they do contain a corrosive, acidic solution which can cause a chemical burn. Take extra care if there are signs of corrosion to the battery or the battery terminals.
    Where appropriate protective clothing.
    If you are not confident in what to do then just take your car to a garage to get the battery swapped over.
    Take care not to touch both battery terminals at the same time with a metal object.
    Tools Required:
    Spanner or socket set,
    Possibly star key bits,
    Screwdriver may be required,
    Cleaning cloth,
    Gloves,
    Jump Leads
    New battery that is as specified.
    Basically my car battery died the other day and today represented the first opportunity to get a new one, and fit it.
    I always find it a pain that after changing a car battery the car radio has lost all memory or other functions. Some vehicles can also lose other electronic functionality such as to electric windows and sensors.
    To avoid this problem commercial solutions are available within a proper garage set up but all I had available was my other car and it’s car battery.
    My stages.
    Remove protective cover to the positive battery terminal.
    Undo and remove any casing, bracket etc that is holding the battery into position.
    Attach jump leads from alternate battery source to the terminals clamps that are on the battery to be removed. Place the negative (black) lead on first, with positive (red) lead on afterwards. By placing on one lead at a time you reduce the chance of both leads touching each other to create a short circuit and spark.
    Loosen fixing clamps to the battery terminals and then remove.
    I had to remove the air filter box in order to remove the old battery but I have never had to do that with any other vehicles before.
    Remove old battery.
    Fit new battery, making sure it goes in the same way as the old one previously sat.
    Re connect the terminal connection leads, and tighten fully.
    Remove the jump leads.
    Refit any bracket or casing to hold the battery securely back into position.
    Ideally re-grease the battery terminals to add additional protection from environmental moisture, dirt and contaminants.
    Refit the protective cover to the positive terminal.
    Secure the car bonnet back down.
    Put car keys in the ignition and check the car starts okay and radio etc function as they should.

    I was impressed how the clips stayed on. I can see them slipping off. Nice video!

      Some cable clamps are definitely better than others. My old set would struggle to hold onto anything.
      Good luck with your car 🚙

      @@diyhomeandgardening Just got done a little bit ago, and it worked like a charm. Radio settings, bluetooth connection for phone, clock etc.. Like I never touched it.. First thing I noticed was the alarm didn't go off when connecting the new battery, then I noticed the clock still had the correct time.. Thanks again...

    The plastic covers are primarily to protect against accidental short circuit, not water

      Thanks for watching and messaging. Correct in they are to protect from short circuit and damage of all kind to the terminals

    Hey great video :) Can you tell me if another car has to be turned on while swapping the batteries or is it enough to just connect the cars with the jumper cables?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  Год назад +2

      Hi Stefan. Thanks for the question. You don’t need the other car to be on, just connect to the battery via cables for continuity of supply.
      Hope that helps.

    So you put 24v through a12v system?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  2 года назад

      You are not running the vehicle so the alternator isn’t kicking in to effect the loading. Also, you are disconnecting one battery that is not holding proper charge straight after connecting the second.
      So long as you don’t connect to a battery being charged by an alternator you are fine, as is the car system which is load protected.

      That's not how it works, the battery would need to be connected in series to be 24 volts

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  2 года назад +1

      @@jonathankatz9471Also you would need 2 fully charged batteries in series to produce that voltage.

      He connected them in parallel (2nd batt neg to neg original batt, pos to pos on batteries), which keeps the 12v and increases Ah or cranking power. To increase to 24v you connect in series. Can be other way around, but for eg original battery neg leave in its current connection location, then its pos goes to the 2nd batteries NEG.. Then 2nd batt pos connects to vehicle power.
