    Great video. They should sell these pre made. It is very important to maintain the voltage in some cars . Glad I stumbled over this.

    I bought an OBD2 memory saver, and only pins 4 & 16 are connected.

    This is a great way to retain your radio presets & the HVAC actuator learned values, as well as the crucial adaptive strategies learned by the ECM/TCM modules. However, one point needs to be stressed, and that is, when replacing the vehicle battery, make sure you don't allow the positive cable (or wrench) to touch ground/earth, otherwise you'll lose all module memories, & you'll likely be replacing the fuse associated with pin-16 for the DLC connector. Also, since pin-16 is hot-at-all-times, it isn't necessary to turn key to accessory position, it should feed all circuits requiring keep-alive pwr. Thanks

    What battery charger do you use to maintain this battery? I'm looking for one and hard to match charger current output with battery size. Thanks!

    Good how to project, I would recommend that a 10 amp fuse be added for protection. If you look at how the commercial memory saver cables are built, I believe they are fused and have a led to show it is powered and active.

      Yes, adding the fuse is an excellent idea. Thanks for watching!

    Why not just clip on your 12 v battery in parallel with car battery at the battery terminal leads. Just make sure the battery stays connected to the battery leads as you remove the old battery. As far as the car electronics are concerned you never have removed the battery. If you are concerned with isolation just install a diode in the temporary battery leads. As an alternative why not just plug in the temp battery into the 12dc cigarette lighter plug or accessory plug as it is now called. I see your setup has one .This assumes that the accessory outlet does not turn off with the ignition switch which it does in some cars.

      JOHN LUCAS No guarantee it will stay connected.

    one day this was covered in auto tech by NAPA, they make commercial product that does essentially the same thing, one local mechanic said he had used it hundreds of times no problems. and one day some how he set off the air bags on a customers car use at your own risk

      People use them all the time with no problems. Sounds like an isolated incident. Thanks for watching!

    the obdII port has skinny 12v wires, if you plugged this in, and then say accidentally turned on the high beams, what would happen?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  6 лет назад +3

      lez briddon Why would you do that? Makes no sense. You make sure ALL accessories are turned off before connecting the device and removing the battery. The wires for the OBD port power pin can handle around 5 to 10 amps of current, but the battery voltage will drop down quickly.

      Accidentally, he said. Certainly wouldn't want to do that on purpose. That would backfeed a large current into the OBD port wiring, which could be a problem.
      Rather than using a high current capable source like an SLA battery, it'd be more advisable to use something like a 9V battery, or if you have to use a lead acid battery, I'd suggest putting a suitable current limiting resistor in series, so it'll prevent any overload from occurring.
      At the expected tiny loads of the memory backup circuits, it won't drop the voltage appreciably, but will kick in to protect it if you accidentally turn on a high current load.

      9V batteries are a bad choice. There's nothing wrong with using a 12V battery as shown. Thanks for watching

    • @dtrrtd774
      @dtrrtd774 6 лет назад

      Yes, 9V batteries are too expensive for what they are. Of course you know that was only suggested because of their inherent current limited characteristics, so you don't have to go find a suitable current limiting resistor.

      because no one ever, ever in the history of moving around inside the car, has accidentally hit a switch...
      if your going to find an sla, find the jumper cables and just hook it up under the bonnet, way faster than making a magic cable

    Instead of snipping 13 wires to different lengths, why not remove/snip 13 pins? Are you planning to re-use that cable for something else?

      Ron Yerke If you can get deep inside and cut the pins flush with the plastic, then great!

    Instead of having a spare battery to connect to why not get a 12v DC power supply and wire it directly to memory save.. It easier to plug it in instead of having a big 12v battery around. Don't have to worry about keeping it charged as well.

  • @RedWhiteAndBlueVideo

    Actually most cars have charging posts you could connect a charger to as you disconnect and change the battery, for basically nothing.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  6 лет назад +5

      RedWhiteAndBlueVideo Connecting a battery charger to the vehicle w/o the battery installed is a bad idea.

    • @Nodularguy1
      @Nodularguy1 6 лет назад +2

      Not a good idea. You run the risk of damaging many electronic items that way. A charger is not designed to be a constant current output like a battery.

      My Noco Genius has a 12v power mode designed for this. Also, I think you could have just used alligator clips and attached the small battery to the battery terminals and achieved the same thing as the Noco Genius. Its still a cool video and cheaper than a Noco. Thanks for making it.
