  • How to add top level domains to a WordPress Multisite Network.
    1. Add a sub site: Network Admin - Sites. Add New.
Add the name of the top level domain. Add the Site Title and Admin Email.
    Click the Add Site button.
    2. Login to your web host. Go to the Control Panel. To the Domains section. Find the domain you added to the multisite. Change the domains "Document Root" and have it point to the multisite "Document Root".
    3. Go back to the WordPress Multisite Network Sites page. Edit the sub site you added. Change it to the correct domain name. Save the Changes and view the sub site. It should now show the top level domain.

Great video. I'd watched a few videos about domain mapping, but none explained it as clearly as you. Thanks!

I have finally come across your video for this one. Finally, it works after so many attempts and failed from watching other RUclipsrs before you. Thank you very much. To add, I still have several questions or concerns regarding this multisite operation.
    1) If there is a virus or error or a hacking happens to go into the "main site" as the network, will that affect the whole site? What about the hacking on the "non-main sites"? What will happen?
    2) What will happen if some non-main sites intend to download plugins or themes that differ slightly from the main site? Will all sites still work?
    3) Will the non-main sites obtain or catch the "HTTPS-SSL" protocol from the main site if the main site purchases or is equipped with SSL?
    4) Can I still clone all contents that are in the non-main sites into a single site (different TLD Domains)? For instance, a client changes his mind and he wants to have a non-main site as a single site and no longer is a part of the multisite?
    5) What if the clone transfer is switching from Shared Hosting to VPS Hosting? Will the clone work as well? How about for different platforms that are non-WordPress, will this be available for a multisite?
Hope you will reply back with these answers. Thanks very much ahead of time.

      Hey @InfoTech Enthusiast
      1, 2, 3 I do not know.
4 check out the WordPress plugin Duplicator Pro and see if that covers what you need.
      5 I do not know.
I would suggest posting these questions at wordpress.org/support/forum/multisite/ and searching online. You can also ask your web host these questions as well. I assume you will need to try out multiple places to get knowledgable answers. Good luck!

Thank you for this tutorial. Really appreciated. Question I have. Say I have 1 website, that I use for my agency. I want it to be the main site with 1 theme. And I want to add another 6 or more websites using different top level domains; with a simple single page template such as "Domain For Sale" By ThemeAtelier. but since each top level domain will have small content change, but a similar template, would that be fit for multisite? I can elaborate more if needed.

      Hey
I would go here and post the same question. wordpress.org/support/forum/multisite/
As you will get better replies there than what I can give. Do add a comment to your question here when you figure out how you want to get this done.

This is very helpful. Thanks for the info mate. I do have couple of questions :
1 - I am using WP Ultimo with SSL certificate from Cloudflare, are these steps still apply to my case?
2 - Let's say I have a client that want to map his custom domain to his subdomain within my WP Multisite which he paid for, what is the best practice for this?
3 - I found a problem with the wildcard SSL for custom domains when I do them manually and I wonder how would that work for my customers & how will they do their SSL.

      Hi Mao Kue.
I do not know. You will need to explore and find out.
One way would be to directly ask the web host support. Do also see my reply to Infomatic just below.

Check and see if your web host uses Softaculous as that is an easy way to setup multiple WordPress sites in various domains. As for my web hosts I can login and go to Softaculous and go through the process of setting these up. There should be multiple tutorials online in relation to using Softaculous.

This is great but is it possible to add a wildcard in cPanel under domains so if any new site is created in the multisite it automatically points to the multisite without having to go into cPanel and manually update/add them?

Once upon a time I believe that worked. I do not know if that is still the case. Ask your hosting provider about this. When you figure out the solution do post here again so others can see your question and a solution. Thank you.

How shall I install WordPress in a subdirectory of an existing site created by myself and has hosting services out of Wordpress? Do you have any idea?
