By far the most complete performance of this work, both interpretatively and the fact that it contains all five movements plus the unpublished variations.
Sokolov is in my opinion one of the greatest pianists still alive, belonging to the group of great pianists of all times like Richter, Rubinstein, Horowitz, Arrau and many others !!!!!
The first movement is played here in Schumann's revision of 1853. Sokolov chooses to include the rarely played Scherzo Vivacissimo, believed to have been composed in 1836, but published posthumously in 1866. The Variations also are re-edited by Sokolov, who includes 2 often excluded variations. He makes a convincing case, but not always works. I have to say though that the finale prestissimo possibile is the most imaginative playing of this work that I have ever heard. Amazing.
Tremendous. Wonderful that Sokolov icludes the movements that Schumann left out. How could one do without that new delightful carnavalesque Scherzo. Sokolov really brings out the chrarcater of the themes - he adds something mysterious to the Clara Wieck theme of the slow movement. He plays the now second Scherzo with just the right lightness and humour so that it is not overly assertive and the great wild assertion comes in the Finale, a wonderful mosaic of all the themes or characters.
not a comment on a comment, but for sheer refinement, infinite softness, unimaginable detail, beauty of sound quality, hypnotic intensity, liquid magic and pure foreverness - for me there's never been anyone like Grigory. Not in the whole of history.
From ballistic to tenderness in the blink of an eye. Sokolov has the rare ability to deliver masculine aggression and feminine sensitivity with conviction and a unique interpretation unlike no other.
Yes, but sometimes the rall. are exagerated. With much less rall. Horowitz manages to keep the the whole thin g much more exciting, I think. But very great performance indeed! Bravissimo!
It´s the best performance I´ve heard of this sonata EVER! This man is pure genius! That first movement is very hard to make it sound "right". He just nails it! Not to mention the Andantino. Pure poetry.
The more you listen to it, the more it goes deeply, sharpening your heart...This piece is a revelation! Schumann composed it for Clara and I do like it.
This was most beautifully performed. It was nice to hear hear the complete work. Thank you for the download. I really enjoy Schumann's musical complexities and I know it takes one hell of a pianist to untangle them and show them in all their brilliant colours. Thank you Mr S.
Wow, BOTH Scherzi and a couple of variations I didn't know existed - a Schumann Extravaganza! This is my first listening of this work, I really enjoyed it. I haven't listened to Sokolov before, but he's fantastic. I
wind, ocean, tempest, this piece started like it was the beginning of the life. After. "Scherzo molto comodo". an old prickly man whisper to a young children.
Listening again for at least the 5th time. Apart from the superlative interpretation, what can one say about the fabulous Schumann Sonatas, all three? Original and inventive from bar to bar, from phrase to phrase.
Great performance! I do not think there is anybody who could play this piece like this these days. Horowitz is still the reference for this piece, but Mr. Sokolov comes close, what is the best compliment any pianist can get!
I think it is of a wholly different order than the Horowitz version here on RUclips. Just stating what is there, in the score, suffices to prove human insanity, as Schumann knew he was conveying and Sokolov achieves - it is not necessary to act it out eccentrically, as Horowitz does.
I adore Grisha, but I wish I could understand his interpretation of the Clara Wieck Variations - I’m sure he could see it, but I can’t understand them being taken that slowly :(
The unconventional movement titles already convey Schumann's search for thematic material to sustain the whirls of arpeggio forms which sound almost atonal at times. It is possible that, if he had persisted in writing exclusively for the keyboard, that his music would have evolved into expressionism. It takes a Sokolov to make sense of the Sonata. One wonders whether he found real pleasure in compassing its difficulties.
I find Horowitz too mechanical at times playing this sonata. With Schumann you need to let go of the tempo sometimes otherwise matching the compass will result in almost disaster. Schumann's conception of time is literally of a mad man, it's his own conception of time that makes sense, but you have to get close to his way of understanding music. And as contradictory as it might sound, only a "sound" person conscient of that can get close to that conception, and Sokolov does that with beautiful results.
By far the most complete performance of this work, both interpretatively and the fact that it contains all five movements plus the unpublished variations.
Living legend plays legendary piece...

Sokolov plays with such dedication and intent in EVERY performance. A giant among the greatest of pianists.
One of Schumann’s grratest pieces and so rarely played...
Sokolov’s performance touches the sky...
« rarely played » because too difficult
It's called "the concert without an orchestra"
@@1947laurence I disagree, it's much less difficult than the Fantasie or the Carnaval for example.
1. Allegro
2. Scherzo Vivacissimo 9:08
3. Scherzo Molto comodo 13:13
4. Quasi variazoni_Andantino de Clara Wieck 19:10
5. Prestissimo possibile 31:00
This is my favourite piano performance of all times. I return here from time to time to check whether I still like it so much. I do!

I very much appreciate comments such as this that explain to a layman, this one anyway, why the music does not sound quite familiar.
thanks very much for the information about this masterpiece!!

Sokolov shows the real depth and greatness of this very rich and complicated Schumann' s Sonata.

There is a story that once Argerich and Friere listened to performances and tried to decide whether the pianist was male or female.

Schumann was so honest in his music that sometimes it is almost too much to bear it, like here in Andantino de Clara Wieck.

For example 34 minutes 47 seconds to 34 minutes 51 seconds ... There is a habit like Sokolov in such a place.
He gives the work a more poetic reading than Demus i find. It breathes more also. This said i also enjoy Demus .
everytime, there need to be people coughing throughout the piece....
komponiert in 1835
Can someone provide the timings please?
10:27 débussian isnt it?
