    By far the most complete performance of this work, both interpretatively and the fact that it contains all five movements plus the unpublished variations.

  • @nevskixx
    @nevskixx 13 лет назад +42

    The first movement is played here in Schumann's revision of 1853. Sokolov chooses to include the rarely played Scherzo Vivacissimo, believed to have been composed in 1836, but published posthumously in 1866. The Variations also are re-edited by Sokolov, who includes 2 often excluded variations. He makes a convincing case, but not always works. I have to say though that the finale prestissimo possibile is the most imaginative playing of this work that I have ever heard. Amazing.

    Tremendous. Wonderful that Sokolov icludes the movements that Schumann left out. How could one do without that new delightful carnavalesque Scherzo. Sokolov really brings out the chrarcater of the themes - he adds something mysterious to the Clara Wieck theme of the slow movement. He plays the now second Scherzo with just the right lightness and humour so that it is not overly assertive and the great wild assertion comes in the Finale, a wonderful mosaic of all the themes or characters.

      I think it is of a wholly different order than the Horowitz version here on RUclips. Just stating what is there, in the score, suffices to prove human insanity, as Schumann knew he was conveying and Sokolov achieves - it is not necessary to act it out eccentrically, as Horowitz does.

    "Concierto sin orquesta" "El artista , dice el crítico musical, no es un músico que labora, sino un alma que manifiesta sus penas más íntimas utilizando el lenguaje musical.. Solo situándose el auditorio en este punto de vista podrá comprender el profundo alcance de la tercera Sonata" Yo me tomo el atrevimiento de añadir que no solo así debe situarse el oyente sino fundamentalmente el ejecutante para lograr trasmitir ese sentimiento, ese laborar., con cada nota.

    The unconventional movement titles already convey Schumann's search for thematic material to sustain the whirls of arpeggio forms which sound almost atonal at times. It is possible that, if he had persisted in writing exclusively for the keyboard, that his music would have evolved into expressionism. It takes a Sokolov to make sense of the Sonata. One wonders whether he found real pleasure in compassing its difficulties.

    • @raymondgood2359

    I find Horowitz too mechanical at times playing this sonata. With Schumann you need to let go of the tempo sometimes otherwise matching the compass will result in almost disaster. Schumann's conception of time is literally of a mad man, it's his own conception of time that makes sense, but you have to get close to his way of understanding music. And as contradictory as it might sound, only a "sound" person conscient of that can get close to that conception, and Sokolov does that with beautiful results.
