We did 2 weeks and I think $3000 is a safe budget. Some tips for deciding on budget is 1) The actual flight to Japan (I’m from California and we budgeted $1000 and ended up spending $800)(Time of year is always a factor too) 2) Types of accommodation you want to do. Hostels, Airbnb, hotels. 3) Our food budget is $50 per person per day and that was perfect. We ranged it cheap food and expensive. But honestly Japanese price to quality is so good. We were happy with convenient store food. 4) How much shopping you want to do. That all depends on you.
I always think that it just depends what you prioritize when you want to travel. The more money you can save the more money you’ll be able to spend. After college many years ago, I did a 6 week Europe for $3000. I definitely budgeted my says so my money could go further.
I think you can make any budget work. Hopefully this helps. Let me know if you want any more help.
