Hi again thanks for the reply just a thought I don't know why I never thought of it before. But being an electrician I know there are DC breakers out there from well known companies, and they trip at what it says on the lid plus a short term delay of 10%. They are not cheap, but what price on one's life. They look exactly like the CB you have in your house.

Thankyou for highlighting the dangers of cheap electrics I own a commercial vehicle parts company and I have lost count the amount of times I've told customers to buy from bonifide companies. Your proper motor factors may be a bit more expensive but they can source all of their products back to factory and any product advice/problem solving that goes with the product. A welcome video.

Every electrical line protects is divided to two.short circuit and nominal amp operation.this fuses are for short circuit brake wich is more then the nominal amp so surge current or so wan't trip the switch.for nominal amp need other methods such OL.OR smaller fuses.

Very well said. I had these installed about a year ago and they kept failing, thought maybe I was being too heavy handed with them, when through a few before I decided they were utter brown plopage. Like your good selves I changed them for those very items you now have. My system is tiny compared to your outfit so I’ve plumped for the 30a, 40a and 50a fuses..and uprated the cables to boot ..shouldn’t need much more than that, but I feel that my pride and joy won’t burn overnight and will provide me many more years of safe loyal service. Thanks for making others aware.

Well done on highlighting the problem with the breakers , I will be testing and changing mine , I would suggest you check your cable sizes so that they are rated for your fuse sizes

Remember that loads of electronics, inverters especially, have huge banks of capacitors. That means that the input will remain at the supply voltage even after the power is disconnected. It's worth grounding out supplies if you really want to check if a breaker is broken.
Yer it dose hold a big amount . But massively safer with a fuse . Them trips are just not good enough
The problem is that a ground isn’t a ground in a van.
There are two types of fuses in relation to speed Slow-Blow Fuse vs Fast-Blow Fuse. A fast blow fuse should immediately cut the power if the current is above the rate value. A slow blow fuse will alow current above the rating for some time and when it gets hit enough it will blow. The reason slow blow fuses exist is that you often have a higher initial current that then drops. Chagin up capacitors, staring electrical motors will result in a higher initial current. How long it takes a slow blow fuse to cut the power will depend on the current above the listed rating and to a lesser degree the temperature. The time can be many
If you look at mega and midi link fuses on 12voltplanet you will find the following text in the description "Current ratings shown are the continuous ratings." so they are slow blow fuses. The fuse tested 2:30 is likely also a slow blow fuse. It is stating the current is 107 amp and 5 seconds later states it is 175 amp and the fuse cut the power. That is a behavior that is expected for a fuse like that.
You can download the datasheet of the MTA fuses that 12voltplanet sell from the manufacturer and in a PDF called MTA_megaVAL_Technical_Data_Sheet_v01.pdf there is a graph for the melting time at 23 C temperature and 150 amp fuse should take around 300 seconds = 5 minutes to blow at 200amp, it is a bit hard to read in the log-log graph. For a 1 second blow time, you need 700 amp according to the graph.
So the tested cheap eBay fuse was a lot faster than the brand name MTA fuses, there can also be some large in the amp measurement so the current was higher. So if you test fuses look but how they should behave according to the manufacturer.
The 50 amp breaker shown in the video might work as designed when it requires 3x the current for a short time. I have not looked at the datasheets. But if they fail so there is a connection between the different ends when you trip they should not be used. I am not sure the voltage mess arent you did show what you think it showed. The inverter will have large input capacitors that will take some time to drain. If the inverter is off it could be in minutes. When you measure the voltage the current through the voltmeter is very low so even within connected the voltage might remain high.
So it would be interesting if you measure the resistance over the breaker now when they are removed to see if it is shorted when it is open
I did manage to find a datasheet for some similar thermal circuit breakers similar to the one in the video. There were two graphs for different models of breaker and thrip tome of one at 3x the current is at around 5s for both but at 2x the current it is 10 seconds for one and 20 seconds for the other type. There was no clear time in the video of the rest so it is very hard to say if they work as designed or not.
So all tested switches might work as designed in regards to how fast the turn of at high current. It is impossible to tell from the show test in this video. What is still an interesting question is did the one that you use for the inverter fail so there was a short trough it even when you tripped the switch or not.

@@UrbanVanlife What I am unsure about is why u felt the original were crap and the replacements were not, whats the differences, and did you test multiple units of the same type and compare those to identify whether it was part of a bad batch etc also did you test the new ones as a direct comparison? yeah you would fit a slow blow one on an inductive load like a motor or transformer I'd say. In a house these would be type c or even a d type breaker.

I just learned something new about those breakers…..resistant heat splits the bi-metal plates…..which releases the spring loaded switch…..so obviously if it’s not overheated it will still be connected 🤔

Fuses always react and blow faster then CB’s, they might be less convenient to replace but ten minutes replacing a fuse isn’t the end of the world. Good quality CB’s react almost instantly in a short circuit situation and trip almost instantly due to the instantaneous current rise, well before the wiring overheats. But if you raise the current slowly it takes time for the thermal mechanism to react. That ones that didn’t disconnect properly are a bit concerning though!

A very timely vlog. I was about to swap my 100A fuse in the engine bay for a breaker for the split charger - I certainly won't be now! I'll stick to removing the battery terminal!

It always amazes me how people spend a fortune on solar panels, batteries and inverters, but then “go cheap” on their cables and protection.
IMO a breaker (if it works) is a means to occasionally disconnect something whilst you work on it. A fuse (and one from a reputable supplier!) is what you use as protection for any short circuits.
A 100Amp fuse should be able to comfortably carry 100A, and any over current then becomes a time vs excess relationship. Thankfully most failures result in massive over current situations that quickly blows the fuse. Yes it’s a pain when you are replacing a fuse rather than resetting a trip, but far better than needing a fire extinguisher.
Thanks for bringing this to peoples attention, even 12v can kill in ways that don’t involve electrocution.

all breakers have a trip delay curve so are actually designed to take at least double the rated amps BUT only for a short time (20 seconds or so), if they didn't they would trip too early but they should trip in seconds not just sit there smoking !!
check out blue sea or bussman industries for propper breakers with a full spec sheet and a long history in the marine enviroment.
They do cost, £50 upwards but if you need a breaker rather than a fuse i'd recomend them otherwise as you say mega fuse will literaly do, the intended job !
TOTALY agree mate and we are like you seen on the video that exact couple that spent money on good gear then fitted cheap fuses . But thankfully for us we changed them and I hope others see this as well . I don’t thing people realise how dangerous they are o know we didn’t

The problem is not the breaker type. The problem is that it was of extremely inferior Chinese construction. I have used this type of breaker (Bussmann brand only) very successfully for many years. I use the Type 1 stud self-resetting, ATM, E71/T71 Mini-ATM, and others. All Bussmann or the occasional Fastronix brands. I also test each breaker prior to installing it. The U.S. military also specifies breakers in most places for their vehicles.
I use a 50a one purely as a disconnect, it was working fine, I'd better check it now after seeing that. Thanks for the heads up

It would depend on what fuses you have and where they are sourced from, as we don’t have that information we couldn’t give you a correct answer, if you trust that it’s from a reputable company we would say trust your instincts but it’s a hard one to call

have you any info on fusing factor for your fuses. a 10 amp fuse with a ,5 fusing factor would blow at 15amps. fuse for the wire size and not the equipment.

I was shocked when I payed a visit to 12vplanet's web site and seen that they are selling the very same shit 12v fuse breakers featured in your V log ... love your videos and have the upmost respect for the both of you 👏
The ones from 12 volt planet aren’t the same ones we had in our van, we where silly and got ours from Amazon without thinking, but the ones they sell are of a much better quality, I think we only paid around £10 for ours whereas the ones on 12 volt planet are much more expensive, but this is because they have gone through the proper testing!

Hi Neil. Thank you for the video it's better to be safe than sorry. I had 4 of those breakers in and have just purchased the others you recommend to change them . I have a victron MPPT 75/15 what size fuse would you fit and what size cables would you recommend putting in as the terminals are small. Any suggestions would be helpful . Cheers mate
I’d go for no less than 16mm cable mate then for the fuse work out cable length and total max amps then add a little on 5amp or so

I was more than happy to donate the breaker for a good cause.. Mainly not burning our vans down.. It was brought from Amazon FYI.. I did try to raise a safety issue with them but its all about the ££££££

"don't mess about with electrics" absolutely.....especially if you don't know how stuff works. For example using a multimeter, it can still show a voltage across a blown fuse/trip ....if you don't know get help. Great vids

@@UrbanVanlife hopefully but possibly the only field this year be the big picnic one. After finding my mistake I made with my insulation in 2019 in the roof the van looks like from the beginning all the roof down lockers and wall.
Slowly going back up. Learn by your mistakes, all because I used a craft spray adisive not the heated ones you should use :( hopefully she’s ready for overland show in June. :( those switches look horrible. Been lucky when I bought my fuse box like you have they supplied the ones you bought in the kit :)
That’s interesting. I’m wondering though if you’re confusing overload current with fault current? I’d have to read some DC standards but with a normal breaker you wouldn’t get disconnection in the required time unless (commonly but not always) you’d expect to have to pull 10 times the rated tripping current to achieve disconnection in the safe time period. Overload current (what your demo was) does take a lot more time to disconnect because it’s only using the thermal properties of the circuit breaker. In that situation it’s difficult to how you’re safer replacing a breaker with a fuse? Although if you have Mickey Mouse breakers not made to a known standard then of course anything would be better.
What does surprise me is with the amount of DC in a van conversion (especially with the increasing use of solar panels) why nobody seems to be fitting B Type RCD’s . Normal RCD’s can’t see can’t see residual faults from DC so there’s no upstream protection that would disconnect the entire installation safely and very quickly..It’s an interesting one I’ll have to get into when I’ve got more time but for now the best type of protection would be a Type B RCD as soon as it comes into the caravan, especially with the complete lack of any tangible fault current at a UK Caravan pitch point..

Hi Neil and Emma, been watching your vids for a while now. Boss to see you dusting the cobwebs off the Custom! I have a quick question on this, I have a 2016 Custom and currently converting. I’ve all my electrics under the passenger seat. I have ordered a swivel base without considering the electrics, now wondering if they would still work together. Do you have any advice on this, is it possible AT ALL to make this work even with a bit of jigery pokery..??? I’ve ordered the same base as you installed on yours… ta! x
Ohhhh that’s propper tricky one that mate . With how the seat base goes on the crafter I can’t see a way how this could be done with the whole seat swivelling . If the top seat section span then it would be fine but it dosnt the whole thing dose . May be just use that section for storage and move the electrics to another section of the van . Massive pain I know but I have thought about this for a few hrs now after emma mentioned your comment . And I can’t see a way . It would have to be moved or no seat base unfortunately . Sorry I could help mate

I have used many of those chinese ones off of amazon, and found i had to buy 5 to get 2 good ones, they would not put the power through a 3kw inverter so i changed them all to the ones you were changing to and have had no problems - inverter works great too

Those breakers have been tested and proven a lot safer than victron and blue sea.

You can’t beat a simple fuse - I used the same ones in my van for the split charge relay I just added. Running a big fat wire from the starter battery, under the chassis is how that’s done - to a relay that then connects to the leisure batteries and if that ever shorted you need a fuse at either end that pops or you have a serious problem!
The “posh” chinesium breakers clearly are dodgy - good video highlighting this.
Yer I must admit the fuses are a better cheeper and more effective way of staying safe . There is one thing we know . They work
Sorry, im a little confused - are you saying even the surface mounted circuit breakers 12v planet supply arent good and should use mega fuses jnstead? Ive just been quoted for the 60a, but think ill change for the megas now.
I have in line breakers for the solar, everything else is strip fuses as I was skint. Awkward to change but reliable. 12 volt compressor yes for the Landy and the air horn. Would that make a good video!?

i only use ANL fuses i learned about fuses etc alot from car audio and melting wires due to breakers not tripping luckily i had quick disconnect on the battery
Well this has scared the crap out of me, but thanks for pointing out the issues. I've got two of those breakers which whilst tested and working perfectly they are not going to last the week, they're getting replaced.
To be honest I felt the same a few weeks ago when we found all this out and it was a massive shock so your not alone there . Thank you for watching
@@UrbanVanlife as you rightly said there's no point mucking around with leccy. 12voltplanet order in, and added some new switches to replace the ridiculously crap ones I bought from Amazon, out of 5 , 2 have fallen apart already.
I was always told they were dodgy unless you bought the most expensive ones so I just went with a midi fuse holder and strip fuses, dirt cheap but i assume safe and reliable.
MIDI and maxi all the way for us now man and when recommending them as well . But you don’t know untill you know I guess . Just hope it saves a few people

Hey im running an old 6000 watt inverter in my truck camper (not actually using anything that draws that much power, at most a heater at 1500 watts) but ive got a 200amp fuse block right before the inverter and a 200amp circuit breaker right after the battery in my engine bay, 1 I'm going to switch that circuit breaker out for a fuse block but 2, do you think 2 200amp fuse blocks before the inverter is enough or do i need to higher amp fuses?
My question would be why a 6000 w inverter that’s madness lol . And for some thing that big mate I’m not the right person to ask . May be the national grid

Got a similar 'torpedo' type breaker on the kayak for my electrics.... Use it as a power breaker as well as a fuse breaker. If that fails, what could I swap it out for? As space is limited, I can't have separate breakers then fuses....
I’d fit a smal midi fuse abs a dedicated breaker off switch bud . Or if you have the cheap breakers like so many of us do . Then it may be worth investing in a decent one from 12vplanet . There is good ones you can get that work perfect . SADDLY if you got them off eBay or Amazon then I’d defo check them out .

I have similar style fuse holders and have fitted the flat fuses that are slotted but after installing them when you put the crimp on there’s not enough length on the stud to make contact with the nyloc section of the nut. Are these better?
The studs on these are long enough to get your nut on with the nyloc if that’s what you are looking for then these maybe better for you!
@@UrbanVanlife yes because the ones I had seem to have worked loose as the fuse had slipped out I also believe it to be part of a voltage drop issue, I’m a firm believer there should be at least 1 -2 threads showing out the top of the nut

I have one of those 50amp breakers between leisure battery and fuse box, am I right in saying If i replace with the better fuse I can fit an isolator switch too to shut the power down instead of the button on the sh!t trip switch

With the circuit breakers you could trip the switch to isolate the circuit. How would you now isolate the circuits please?
Well I’d just turn the off isolation switch that I turned off to do the swap over and we do intend fitting another one to the inverter as well

I don’t have an inverter in my van but have just fit a second charge controller to use a plug in suitcase solar panel. I have put 10 amp breakers either side of the controller. I have not used the ones in your video but similar ones shaped like a torpedo. Are these just as dangerous?I wanted breakers so I could switch both sides off when unplugging solar panel.
A lot of people do use them as breakers but they are not designed for that kind of application . If you think of it like turning the breakers off in your house to swich the lights off . Also it depends where you got them from as well if there an eBay or Amazon kind of breaker then chances are they’re just as bad mate . Id think about swapping them for fuses abs may be fitting an actual iscolation swich so you can turn them off

Those fuses you removed, were the recommend ones to use, in loads of videos and in my first build (Renault Trafic SWB) I had a £5 10a PVM solar charger, 100w Solar, 100ah lead acid batt and no fuses, as I used the USB on the Solar controller to charge up the devices. As that was all I could afford at that the time. So poor was I, that I had no installation or carpet in the van, bed was raised on 4 pallets and I had a thin mattress. Was the worse 5 days sleeping in the van .. you can hear those violins playing just for me lol
Now on van two and seriously procrastinated on doing this build. Still another Renault trafic but newer and LWB low roof, as need to get into car parks with it. I have one of those controllers (epever) you had that burnt out, one of those fuses you have just swapped and well I bet everything I have is something your swapping out because they are dangerous lol So will do a virtual eyes roll ready for your next video lol

No mate you paid for a premium product . My self and a lot of other people bought the cheep Amazon ones . The ones 12v plannet sell are the propper ones mate you’ll be ok with them
I stopped using a break once I ran an 1800 watt heater test on my 2000 watt pure sine wave lets just say i could use the breaker to cook on and it never blow. Thank you for make this vid.

People also overlook the fuse is to protect the cables not the components so fuse rating will be in relation to the cable size.

Just came across this video after trying to find out why my version of these trip switches trips at around 60-70% of the total rating. So I actually have the opposite problem.

On your victron 30 amp dc to dc they told me I needed a 60 amp for my 30 amp charge ,says that in their manual also . strange isn't it
We trusted what the guys at 12v plannet told us mate . They know better than most and also know these units inside out plus what we all put them trough as well . So I’d rent to trust them more than victron them selves
If I got a 200w solar panel kit, it’s an eco worthy kit, it doesn’t come with a fuse to go between the controller and the battery.. any idea what size fuse I should put?
I’d go for a 20 to 30amp fuse . The maths is watt / volts = amps which gives you 16amps but go a little higher cos it may fluctuate

already ordered a small victron battery protect for stand by mode and i will run heavy apliances trespassing it... most of its use is for when i m not there .. feels ok
I got one of thoee breakers. 60A for a Renolgy charger where the rated max was 50. (typically was measured nearer 30A). It kept popping.
How can a 60A rated breaker keep popping at less than 50A?
I got rid of them all as I couldn't trust them.
