From the thumbnail title, I thought it was gonna be like this movie where a man raised his teenage son to believe the world ended in a plague but he turned out to be a liar and a kidnapper.

The cinematography looks gorgeous, the acting looks excellent, and i very much appreciate including special needs actors playing characters that are not just tokenism or throw away roles. I also look forward to seeing what a non Hollywood non American production company does with all of that Even tired tropes. like zombie movies can gain new life when presented by other cultural voices

So, kid mess up, somehow invite zombies to his place, got his dad killed. Now is fleeing with another boys. Geez, even my 4 year old understand zombies.

In most well-funded movies they'll have firearms which have an integrated blank-firing attachment. Now and then if the actor points the firearm at the camera you'll see the open barrel, then a small way in there'll be a smaller hole.
He is likely using reloaded brass and it underpowered. Or as others said he turn his gas tube. Plus most bulk soviet ammo is steel case which rust mega easy.
I"m a movie armorer and this tells me that they were too cheap to acquire a blank adapted SKS rifle. Without a BFA, the SKS can't cycle with movie blanks. So they have to manually eject the rounds like a bolt action.
Maybe because it's a damn movie. Lol. Maybe its because the rifle is old and has issues and he was never trained or used one up u til he had to. Variables. Bitching about a science fiction or horror movie is pretty hilarious

It could be not functioning properly. The shotgun we see is also in ruff shape.
SKS can be used like a bolt action if the gas system is removed. Some SKSs actually have a gas shut off system to make it a single shot.
