  • In a previous video I repaired a faulty FLIR DM166 Thermal Camera Multimeter. A company called Pergear saw the video and kindly sent me one of their Xinfrared P2 Pro Thermal Cameras.
    I decided to compare it to the FLIR to see which one seems better. I did a few different test, but overall I'm very impressed with the Infiray / Xinfrared device. It has a much better resolution and a faster frame rate so it's also a lot smoother and responsive, I can also record with it, and it also doesn't require batteries as it's powered from the phone.
    If you are in the market for a thermal camera it might be worth considering one of these.

    I was planning on buying this thermal camera but the deal breaker is the app asking for location when saving images. To bad on a otherwise seemingly good product. If they want to know where I live they can kindly ask and I might sell them the information for a few bucks, but Im not giving it for free after paying 250 bucks for their camera.

    If you want to have sound in video recordings the P2Pro app, you need to manually give the microphone permission to the app through the Android settings.
    And I'm also currently working on reverse engineering the USB communication protocol besides the video stream and providing a PC implementation of a "P2Pro Viewer", but that will still take some time.

    FLIR makes some EXCELLENT higher end cameras. In my days as a contractor I would only ever buy FLIR. Best on the market for doing any serious analysis.
    But the bottom end of the market has better options for casual users and home owners. Even the Chinese knock off brands do just fine if you're mostly interested in looking at thermal patterns.

    I bought it few months back and (minor) issues for me are:
    - text color cannot be changed, it's always red. Since I like to use red hot scale, the digits are often burried in a sea of red color. Would be nice to have a setting for the text color.
    - missing the real overlay, that thing it does when showing you extra picture from the phone cam is not that useful
    - when I move it around, the camera freezes for a second every now and then as if it was trying to focus. Very annoying.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  2 месяца назад +1

      I'm not sure on changing the text colour as it's something I've not tried. The freezing for a second now and again is the camera re-calibrating. Most thermal cameras I've used (including the FLIR) do this. I think it's just the way they work. Here is an someone else saying similar on a SEEK thermal camera: www.eevblog.com/forum/thermal-imaging/seek-compact-clicking-and-freezing/

      j s, I held off on buying a thermal cam for decades. I couldn't really justify the expense.
      Then last year or the year before (I think it was) I saw a Flir on sale that had the dual cam thing (thermal and normal image) so I went ahead and bought it because I got tired of using old-school methods for finding hot spots on PCBs.
      Well, wouldn't ya know! I get this thing, played around with the PCBs, loved it, THEN I realized, I can use this for so many other things!
      One of the big time and mess savers was using it to trace out the sewer pipes in the basement. We had issues where water from the kitchen and laundry area didn't seem to be flowing right or fully.
      So I filled the laundry tube with HOT water and then let that drain.
      I aimed the thermal cam at the cold cement and waited.
      Within a short while, areas began to glow orange!!!
      This really helped because it showed exactly what was happening below the cement and it wasn't pretty. LOL
      Thanks to this camera, I was able to use the jack hammer to only open up a path for new pipes.... a path totally different from the stupid mess someone had done years ago.
      Then, I used the camera to survey our hydronic heating system to confirm if there were any cold spots in pipes or the radiators.
      it turns out, it was money well spent.
      In my case, however, I got the hand-held Flir, not one of the smart phone attached types.
      While they are cute, I find them more awkward to use and limiting once phones get older.

    "I'm not being sponsored" and "I've got the camera for free".. is a bit of a misnomer.. you are clearly sponseret since you got paid for your trouble... While it appears genuine there is no way of trusting you

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  6 месяцев назад +1

      Being sponsored would mean they were paying me to give a good review of it. They sent me a camera to review. I was then totally free to give a good or bad totally unbiased review. If it was crap I'd tell you it was crap, if it was good I would say it was good. It's not like they are going to ask for it back. I don't make any commission on any sales on the link in the video. It's pretty much the same as you are totally free to trust me or not. Personally I like the camera, it's a lot better for me than the FLIR one. If you buy one or don't it honestly makes no difference to me. I try to be as honest as I can.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  Год назад

      I'm not sure if the blend would work especially for close up objects such as circuit boards as the distance between the cameras would probably be an issue. They seem to be decent cameras, I've used it now and again but a lot of the faults I come across I haven't really had to use it.

      We've only got about 50 head of sheep. I've only been a farmer for a few years. The boy lambs go to market, but that doesn't even cover the cost of feed, wormer, injections, lamb milk, bottles and shearing. Which is one of the reasons why we started going into rare breeds, but also we need something to keep the grass down.

    Nice mini cam.
    It's very small, so I couldn't expect that size to have a video cam as well so as to do the merging of the thermal and video. Perhaps they'll come out with a version with that fusion option.
    I really like the fusion thing for electronics.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  Год назад +1

      It kind of does with the real world view thing, but uses the phones internal camera. I would think it wouldn't be that hard to combine both sources in software. Perhaps it's something that they may update in the future.

    • @BlondieSL
      @BlondieSL Год назад +1

      @@BuyitFixit I thought of that too. The only problem is that with the cameras being separated so far apart, parallaxing of the 2 images makes it very difficult to impossible to do a proper overlay.
      But then too, the thermal image on that tiny thing is very impressive and the higher res just might make it not necessary to have a fusion element going on.
      I have a feeling that you've found a new direction for your channel as well. .... reviews!
      I mean, why not! It helps others and as companies see your reviews, you'll probably be inundated with products to review.
