I think you've missed the point hah, this is our first home and project so we don't know what to expect as it's all completely new to us. I was more in shock that this smell and blockage clearly wasn't a new thing and must have been going on for ages, so how the previous people living here didn't do anything about it is beyond me because it was stinking the place out 💩
@@WillsWhereabouts wait til you find a pair of stanky keks somewhere ..theres always one ..can be used to fill punch holes in walls for example ..thing is you wont know til a good 6 months in when your partner looks at you as if you been wiping yer bits n bobs on the curtains ..

You had me in stitches doing the electrics, I called hubby in and said "look thats you!!" He said "Yeah but when I change the light switches in the kitchen, the loo flushes at the same time!!!" You're doing a fine job Will and that's because you don't let things faze you, you just give it a go, and when all else fails, there's Instagram!! Keep on doing what you're doing...

Hey Will, EE here, not sure if you already got one but get a cheapo multimeter (a 5er) Always confirm power is off to wiring before starting. Even switching the main breaker off - you just never know. Also comes in handy for fault finding. waste pipes ALWAYS smell, also always keep on top of all house maintenance jobs as they can quickly become serious issues. Good work so far!
Thanks matey, I'll make sure to double check electrics are 100% off for future jobs and yea I think from the state of our kitchen pipes that just goes to show that regular house maintenance is necessary
Mate small tip. When I change switch / sockets I take a pic on my phone off the original one I’m taking out. Just to follow it even replace if it a going to plan 🤣👍🏻 great work keep it going.
Great advice which I did many times but because the back of the original switch in the kitchen was different to our new one it took some playing around with but thankfully got there in the end 😂
This is so relatable. Moved into my first purchase couple years ago, with limited to no diy experience. Learnt a lot through mistakes over these two years - it is satisfying when you get there though!
That’s the pleasure of buying property. We have had lots of properties with problems like that. Fat being put down the sink and blocking the drainage. But you just have to grin and bear it , because once it’s sorted it will be great. Good luck 🤞🏻 😊
A cup of vinegar and some boiling water down the drains every few weeks will keep that at bay. Check the inside dishwasher drain every month too, it gets pretty vile... Great job on the kitchen Will, probably your best work to date! :)
Oh Will. That puts a whole new level on deep cleaning. We all expect to clean when we move into a new place. But never that much. At least you now know it's all to a good standard. I'm in social housing. I fear a lot of my pipes may be awful inside. My housing will never find out. I certainly am not going to take them all apart. Never get back together lol. You and Evie are doing a great job. Can't wait for the bathroom video.
I had exactly the same before Christmas with a two gang, two switch light fitting. I had a flickering light and when I removed the switch I could see a wire out- no idea where it came from. Half hour of swapping wires and I had lights all over the place. Luckily brother in law’s a sparky so he sorted for bacon rolls one Sunday morning. I’m never touching them again.
I’m sorry you had some trial and error that must’ve been frustrating but it looks incredible. You both are doing an amazing job. I love it! Sometimes compulsive behavior creates very clean, beautiful spaces lol you’re a bloodhound on smells. I’m the same way.
Absolutely excellent work….you live and learn from your mistakes, so give yourself a large oat on the back. I did have to smile because I thought the hob won’t go back in as the wooden battens will stop it from being flush with the top….so glad you saw an easy way around your fix.
Wishing you all rhe best for the renovation of the rest of rhe flat. Thanks to Neil and Emma for helping tou out. Hope all is eell, take care and happy new year
Good luck Will 👍👍, you have done a good job so far. Nice to see Neil and Emma, thank you for helping Will out with the dirty jobs ❤️❤️. Happy new year Will and Evily. 💐💐
Quick explanation: LEDs, like all diodes, allow current to flow in only one direction and block current in the opposite direction, similar to a valve. If LEDs were directly connected to a 230V AC power supply, they would only light up during the positive half-wave, as they block the negative half-wave. The result would be a noticeable flicker with a frequency of 50 Hz, as the LED would be off during every second half-wave. LEDs are current-controlled components, where even small voltage deviations can lead to high currents that can destroy the LEDs. A driver ensures that the LEDs are always supplied with a constant and safe current, regardless of fluctuations in the power supply or manufacturing tolerances. Particularly in LED strips operating at 12V, the LEDs are often arranged so that four are connected in series, and these series are then connected in parallel. In a parallel circuit, the voltage is the same across each branch, while in a series circuit, the voltage divides across each component. This is why, in LED strips, the arrangement is such that multiple LEDs are connected in series within each branch, and then these branches are connected in parallel. With a 230V DC power supply, for example, about 64 white LEDs could be connected in series, and the system would work. This is because, in a series circuit, a voltage drop occurs across each LED, and the total voltage is evenly distributed across all the LEDs. This arrangement acts as a voltage divider. However, without additional current limiting, such as through current-limiting resistors or a constant current source, there would still be a risk that small deviations in the LED characteristics could cause overloading. Additionally, different colored LEDs require different voltages (e.g., red LEDs need less voltage than blue ones), which requires precise current and voltage regulation. The driver ensures that the alternating current is rectified and smoothed, so the LEDs can operate flicker-free and efficiently. Without a driver, the LED would also be mechanically and thermally stressed, as the current in the positive half-wave is not constant, but significantly higher at the peak of the sinusoidal voltage than the average value. This could lead to overloading and premature failure of the LEDs.
Awesome cleaning job guys! But I have to be honest, I was gagging , and holding back 🤢🤮🤮 during the cleaning of kitchen pipes😂😂. It is really looking good!
Wow Will fantastic job u did on the kitchen when u do it yourself u learn things and keep them, the place is going to be a knock out I can't wait to see it when it's all done and the furniture is in, kodo's to u!!
I think your doing the right thing. You realize how hard it is to remodel in the same place you live.. it’s almost impossible it’s posible but very very hard to do. Cleaning out somones else’s funk is no fun
For the led strip you could have used just a usb plug it steps down to 12v. The reason led strips cant be on 230v is the LEDs are like 2 volt max for each and just like a fuse will blow if higher. The flickering is due to it being on AC current
Will I might be loving these more than your van fixing videos lol. It's a whole different ball game isn't it. I'm lucky in France unlike the UK our outlets don't have switches all over the place. Amazing progress both of you. You doing mostly everything it'll feel even more like a home. I'm a strong believer of learn by doing.
The one thing i hated was renovating the kitchen. Did it 6 years ago wife and I ordered kitchen all made to measure, then she decided she wanted a solid brick wall put in between the living room and kitchen instead of the plaster board wall. Kitchen comes, time to install it, it was all too big. So had to remeasure and reordered kitchen. 🤣
That dishwasher plug socket under the sink should probably be higher than it is and with it being on the side and the cable looking stretched would suggest the installer couldn't be arsed with drilling another hole for the cable to go through.
To be fair i dont think who ever has left you a kitchen like this, is most unlikely to have left you a pot of gold!!!, im so glad that you are able to manage, your lucky that your friends are keen to muck in with you and help out, you have some marvellous friends, Evie seems to be very placcid to your almost manic self, bless her, i think i have been quite lucky with the purchases of property i have made i dont know what i would do in your circumstance, thanks for another peek into yours and hers lives, the vids are amazingly good. Blessed be, oh and happy new year.
A mains socket below the sink looks quite scary? I switched 4 lights in a strip in my hallway with smart bulbs, which gives nice control over light levels at different times of the day.
Some washing machines have filters that you could maybe change ? Especially if the washing machine isn’t new ! Just good overall washing machine maintenance that gets forgotten by pretty much everyone 😂😅you might find some disturbing stuff in the process but you’ll be thankful you did it in the end !
Drain snake would have cleaned the inside of those pipes fine. Also the washing machine pipe is an open sewer since its connected below the u bend and if the flat is left for a while the water in the u bend may have dried out and the stink floating out from the sewer. The switch is controlling the wrong rooms because you have wired the ring main through the switch. However it is supposed to be a ring, as the name suggests, and connected to the fuse box at both ends. The reason is that the cable is often not rated to the circuit load rating, often 16 amp for a lighting ring. Having it connected in a ring means that the cable is effectively doubled up since theres 2 routes back the supply. Its probably not going to be an issue, though, since led lighting has massively reduced the loading on lighting circuits.
I can honestly say, in 22 years, I've never removed waste pipes to clean them!!! I do however use very strong line cleaning chemical weekly, so that keeps any smells at bay, and possibly reduces build up too, but I don't know for sure. 🤣 There's one exception... If you think a kitchen waste pipe is bad, you should see what happens to the men's urinal waste pipes!!! They need fully removing annually and cleaning, and it's the worst job you can imagine, rock hard crystal like substance that needs scraping out and smells of pure ammonia!!! I actually paid a plumber to replace them last year because I couldn't bare doing it again. 🙈🤣
Haha we did try some drain cleaner before removing them but that didn’t seem to do anything at all so they all had to come out! And I’m glad I’ve not experienced a blockage of urine yet 😂😂
@@WillsWhereabouts Looking at those drains, I think your dose of drain cleaner was the first they'd had in 10 years or more! I don't think it works if it's not done regularly. 🙈🤣 How'd you get on with that window, did it open inwards with those catches? I was trying to catch a glimpse in the video, to see if you'd done it and cleaned the outside of them, but couldn't tell. I thought you might have given the outside a deep clean as soon as you found out, given how particular you are about cleaning. 🤣
I remember when I rented a house in Surinam,South America. My girlfriend(later my wife) and I discovered allso a lot of junk in the kitchen. We lifted up a box in the kitchen and it was verry filty with old clothing,an old slippers and lots of ants an other insects. We rented the house for 8 months but we never got it really clean.
Welcome to my job. What I do every day in life, loads of fun (not), waste pipes always smell like that some a lot worse than others. For under the plinths, this is the exact reason why you should silicone the plinths, so food and other spilt liquids can’t go under units. In terms off the dishwasher and washing machine. Spin & drain with water and bleach and that should help.
That's why you should regularly put bleach and sink unblocked down the drains. What concerned me more was the mains socket under the sink! At the bottom of the cupboard too, not half way up!
@WillsWhereabouts To follow on from my last comment, you're doing great work here, making your first home. I have very fond memories of doing the same, many years ago. Keep doing what you're doing.
At least you got a over flow I live in Mackay Australia and we don't have the hole in our sinks so l left tap on a little bit after filling up the kitchen sink and went to do something else when come back the sink was over flowing so let's just say we had water all over the kitchen floor and laundry floor won't make that mistake again
The empty house next door to us had a blocked sink overflow in the bathroom and a dripping tap. Eventually it overflowed and flooded the bathroom floor which fell into the kitchen below, managing to turn on the gas on the hob but not light it. Of course, this was only discovered/deciphered after enough gas had leaked out for us to smell it next door. Thankfully there were no sparks before the gas emergency team came out!
My appetite for new year's fondue has rapidly diminished ;-) But good job! So you are making progress! Nice to see. I hope you have a nice new years eve. I wish you all the best or 2025!!!
Electricity rates? Check out LED light strips theirs all kinds of rolls of LED lights some really thin and just back sided tape holds it in place with small staples
Mate it's a kitchen sink waste pipe, I don't know what you were expecting it to smell or look like.

Thanks Graham thats great to understand better and I've not heard of drain snake so will have to try this next time
I can honestly say, in 22 years, I've never removed waste pipes to clean them!!!
How'd you get on with that window, did it open inwards with those catches? I was trying to catch a glimpse in the video, to see if you'd done it and cleaned the outside of them, but couldn't tell. I thought you might have given the outside a deep clean as soon as you found out, given how particular you are about cleaning. 🤣
I remember when I rented a house in Surinam,South America. My girlfriend(later my wife) and I discovered allso a lot of junk in the kitchen.
We lifted up a box in the kitchen and it was verry filty with old clothing,an old slippers and lots of ants an other insects.
We rented the house for 8 months but we never got it really clean.
People leave all sorts of mess and dirt don’t they
Looking great Will and Evie, Happy New Year to you both. 👍
Thanks mate, happy new year to you too
Welcome to my job.
That’s a great point about sealanting the plinths so we’ll make sure to do this and will give the bleach a try in the washing machine
Well done 👏🏻
👊🏻👊🏻
Well done will 🎉
👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
To then flush the gunk down the toilet and potentially block that one rather than put it in the bin?😂🙈
If a toilet is designed to conquer rock hard poos I think it can handle some goopy sink sludge 🤣🤣
You're not going to block the toilet 🤣
haha I do see your point but thankfully the toilet waste pipe is a lot larger than a kitchens pipes so it should be fine
@@TykitFleine 😂 rock hard poo's sounds pretty painful
@@TykitFleine Blocked toilets are a thing hun, do your research😉😛
About damn time U post lol .... Happy New Year 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hah every Monday Tammy
That's why you should regularly put bleach and sink unblocked down the drains.
What concerned me more was the mains socket under the sink! At the bottom of the cupboard too, not half way up!
Yea we’ll be making sure to do that
@WillsWhereabouts To follow on from my last comment, you're doing great work here, making your first home. I have very fond memories of doing the same, many years ago. Keep doing what you're doing.
Its coming along great Will. I recognise the plumber's accent hes a fellow Scouser 😊
Haha he wasn’t a plumber but a good friend of mine
Well done!
Thanks Tracey
At least you got a over flow I live in Mackay Australia and we don't have the hole in our sinks so l left tap on a little bit after filling up the kitchen sink and went to do something else when come back the sink was over flowing so let's just say we had water all over the kitchen floor and laundry floor won't make that mistake again
That’s so strange, I would have thought that all sinks universally would come with an overflow
I can still taste that smell 😂😂😂 so so funny to watch this .
😂😂 couldn’t have done it without you both ❤️❤️
My appetite for new year's fondue has rapidly diminished ;-) But good job! So you are making progress! Nice to see. I hope you have a nice new years eve. I wish you all the best or 2025!!!
Thanks very much mate, you too 😊
Electricity rates? Check out LED light strips theirs all kinds of rolls of LED lights some really thin and just back sided tape holds it in place with small staples
That’s what I used basically
