I've had this synth for a couple of years now, and it's sorta been my go to. I own a few other synths but im most comfortable with my microkorg. programming is weird at first, but possibilities are open once you get used to it. Plus, making your own patches is a joy I'll also fully admit that i bought it for two specific reasons. 1- LCD Soundsystem use like, five of these things in their live shows. If it's good for Murph and co. then it can't be bad. 2- it's prominently featured (alebit with cool glowing keys) in the Heads Will Roll video.
I have one and believe me for the price of it this is the closes thing you'll get to an high end professional synth it's an amazing machine no wonder they are still making the MicroKorg since 2002 and keep selling like hot cakes
I just bought a second hand MicroKorg S after wanting a MicroKorg for about 8 years. Your video is so informative that I saved it to reference as I learn. Thanks so much!
Thanks for making this! Really sick demo/tutorial. I just picked one up as a step away from using midi controllers & Synth plug-ins. Your video made me feel more confident with its’ applicability.
My ex wife had the black MicroKorg and about 2 years after we split and I was looking at synths because she got me into them, the MicroKorg S came out and I set it up next to my drums to play bass lines and drum one handed while my guitarist goes nuts on his synth pedals. It’s really fun.
Great tutorial. It's an amazing synth still to this day. I have a Novation Mininova which has similar features. I like the fact that the Microkorg is battery operated, but so is my Mininova with a powerbank and and a USB lead. I actually prefer the Mininova for sound, and performance options. Still a classic though
Nicely done, very understandable. But I think an error slipped in: the difference between "Single" and "Layer" is NOT that you have a different number of oscillators, you only have different "polyphony" (voices) at your disposal. The number of oscillators (per voice) is ALWAYS TWO, no matter if "Single" or "Layer" is chosen.
Novation wanted in on the Microkorg first synthesizer market so about 11 years ago the put the Ultranova engine into a device with very similar size and function including the mic vocoder which the MiniNova which is also still in production.
Very informative. Thank you! I love my MK and am just now exploring programming from the ground up. This vid cleared a lot up. And nice tune at the end! The Internet now has a theme song that will play in my head whenever I open a browser
Factory Reset & Turn off Locked Protected Sounds To perform a factory reset on the microKorg Press Shift + Program Number 7 then turn the 1/cutoff knob to select one of the options below IP9 - Reset only one program, use “2/resonance” to select single program Pr9 - Reset all data for all programs GLb - Reset global data
haha, well yeah they're an incredibly powerful synth and I really only scatched the surface of the programmability of them. At some point I'll make a part 2 on the programming aspect.
Hey man. Cool video. Now that I sucked up a little bit, I have a question. But I'm not really sure if I know how to ask since I'm not a synth guy. But I have a DIY pedal controller (kinda similar to the Moog Taurus pedals as far as appearance goes) that I use with a basic Yamaha synth via MIDI cable. Theres a setting on the synth that lets me control it with the pedal controller. I can select the program, octave, and notes I want with the 13 key pedalboard. For example, if I want to play program #82, I would press the program button on the board and press 082 using the pedals (C being 0, G# being 8, and D being 2) and the program would change to 82. I select the octave by pressing the octave button and pressing one of the first 5 pedals (C-E) for the desired octave. I really need a synthesizer that is much smaller than the one that I'm using and found one of these Microkorgs. Do you think the Microkorg will work as a tone generator with a controller such as mine? Thanks, man. Have I seen you on TV or something? Maybe filling in for Paul Shafer on Letterman? But, yeah. Do you think it would work with my pedal controller? Thanks. Have a good day.
@@demonicsweaters Hey thanks for the reply, man. I was waiting to make the purchase before commenting so I could tell you that everything was great. But unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be getting it. Thanks for your speedy reply though, Demonic. I appreciate it.
Well I guess I replied too soon. I picked it up tonight and it is quite lovely. The pedalboard works with it, but you were right to be suspicious of the program change function. I can change the octave, but I guess there's too much mechanical stuff going of for me to change the program. Or too many ones and zeros for my pedal board to handle. But that's okay. The thing is so dang small I'll probably just come up with a way to mount it like the original Moog Taurus. But I've got a whole lot of learning to do before I can mold the sounds I want. Thanks again!
I have Korg MicroX from a buddy but have not used program functions. Is there a 'simple' way to move a sound from one bank to another? When performing, I need to change from Program 001A to 108E...would be much better to just move one of them, so I change from 001A to 001B or another patch that I don't need the sound and can be reprogrammed. Any help would be much appreciated as it is not clearly covered in the actual manual..thanks..David
I've never actually tried one, but have no qualms with Behringer gear as a whole. I usually really like it. If I ever come across one of their synths at a deal I'd definitely pick it up.

Did you see the New Behringer Poly D coming out I think this Month! They say it's actually better than the MiniMoog. Check out some RUclips vids on it, it's Awesome! It will cost $699 and I will wait maybe a year to see if the price goes down!
Those letters that are hard to read are in Greek I think. But anyway, Great Video!!!! Thanks Man! Thanks also for showing some of the parameters and settings I didn't even know about! I really think the Microkorg is overrated honestly. If you like House/Trance stuff, the default sounds will be kinda cool. But unless you're like a pro at making your own patches, I really think it's a form over substance synth. It's hard to make patches, factory resets and things are always a weird sequence of key presses and stuff. The keys also break off really easily and there's only a few places you can order them from. Luckily they're relatively affordable/easy to replace. Also, if you like to record into a DAW, it's much more useful as a midi controller. The sounds are REALLY lo-fi and there isn't much you can do to EQ your way to high-quality sounds. That said, love the small key sizes and it looks so sleak and timeless. It served me well as a midi controller mostly, but it's just a little overrated imo.

I just got one for $200 in mint condition. I am amazed at this thing. Going to learn it big time.
I bought a second hand one eleven years ago, and wiped all the factory presets, learned all about analog synths from this one.

I've watched plenty of videos about how to do this with the MicroKorg. Yours is superior. Thank you!
glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this great demo. This is gonna be extremely useful - something I can get to work on playing around with on my microkorg.

I almost totally get it now! Much more than before!
Super helpful video. one of the best i’ve seen demystifying this great machine
Great video one question can you reset to the factory settings once you save a patch
Factory Reset & Turn off Locked Protected Sounds
To perform a factory reset on the microKorg
Press Shift + Program Number 7 then turn the 1/cutoff knob to select one of the options below
IP9 - Reset only one program, use “2/resonance” to select single program
Pr9 - Reset all data for all programs
GLb - Reset global data
Wow, Justin YOU ROCK! Super helpful stuff.
Wow, well done. Many compliments. Thank you and good music!
Hey just wondering, what is the mic you are using for the vocoder? I bought mine used so ....no mic with it. Thanks!
This is a Korg mic that came with it, but any mic with a 8th " connection should work.
Yeah those Mics are really cheap sounding that you get with this unit. I use one that you can plug in the back of the unit that sounds Much better!
How many patches can you save on the MK?
Nice video. Is that the microphone that came with your MicroKorg? Only mine looks different and sounds pretty lousy.
Crazily helpful! Danke from Germany!
Cool review. Is there series as well as parallel patch setup on that particular model of micro KORG ? Thanks
Best video so far. Does everything you said pertain to the microkord s?
I'm not sure about that.
Put a deadcat/‘windcover’/screen on your Mic (or, ideally, use a better Mic), and the vocoder will sound better …
Great tutorial! Even the policemen got inspired and tested their LFO too ...
Thank you! You really know how to explain what you’re doing! This helped me a lot

playing it using a foot controller shouldn't be an issue at all, I'm not sure how program changes would work, but there's most likely a way.
