I am retired and on a fixed income. I am saving nickels and dimes to get Starlink next year. Hughesnet cost too much for what you get. I am responding early in the morning as the data is less costly. Thank You JC for all the info that you share with all.

Spacex started launching in 2019, and cadence has been high. So, they are 5 years behind to start. If they started high cadence today, it would take 5 years to catch up to where Spacex is today. So, 10 years behind. In 5 years, with starship flying version 3's, spacex would be another 5 years ahead. So, Kuiper is 15 years behind.
Bezos was a beast for 25 years building Amazon, and he did great work. He has been virtually retired since then, enjoying the fruits of his labor. Good for him! He made me a boatload of money. But he is no longer engaged. I can't say I blame him at all for this, but that is the state of affairs.

I had Viasat for 3 yrs. It was brutally slow. Finally Starlink became available and I switched. Been very happy with it. Viasat latency for me was about 3.5 seconds....seconds. Not what they originally pitched. So glad to be on Starlink. Not many (none) other options for me in rural Texas. Hard for me to think of Amazon as a competition at this point. Possible in the future...but I don't see a guarantee of success. Maybe eventually.

Just my observation, But - Elon Musk is driven to succeed in everything he puts his hands on. Jeff Bezos appears to be more concerned with how good he looks when he struts onto a stage, especially when he has that scantily clad girlfriend of his hanging on his arm like a dog in estrus. Two billionaires, one that has obtained billions as a byproduct of his endeavors, and the other who's billions have exposed his true character.

The difference is SpaceX launches Starlink for capability of people to have internet anywhere. Bezos launches Kuiper for MONEY. Musk started Starlink for communication capability of humanity and for future capability around the Moon and Mars. Just like Making Tesla vehicles is to help humanity with non polluting transportation. Money comes in because it's the right thing and people know it. Kuiper will coast with government money because he is a left leaning supporter. But ultimately, it will fail and be bought out by another company, once the administration has shifted. Bezos will probably still have made money from investors and the government. In the meantime Starlink will have expanded and pretty much be the world's alternative internet company.

Bezos is screwed. The FCC license requires Amazon to deploy half the constellation by July 2026 and the remainder by July 2029. That means they have just over two years to launch 1,618 satellites, and three years after that to launch the other 1,618.
Cowboy Jeff is relying on Atlas V, Vulcan, Ariane 6, and New Glenn to get this done. The only sure thing is the remaining stockpile of nine Atlas V rockets set aside for Kuiper launches. ULA isn't making any more Atlases. Vulcan probably won't have much capacity for a while because it always takes a new rocket a long time to iron out the kinks and increase launch cadence, and in the meantime Daddy Space Force has been increasingly annoyed about all the spy sats collecting dust that have NOT launched because of the 4-year-late Vulcan. Ariane 6 is slowly - agonizingly slowly - being put together for its very first launch. They will have the same problems as Vulcan in scaling to a high launch cadence. And New Glenn is nowhere in sight, even less ready for flight than Ariane 6.
Bezos is so completely screwed. He's gonna end up buying a whole bunch of Falcon 9 launches LOL.

When you hear the name "Jeff Bezos" do you think, "brilliant software engineer," or "gifted physicist," or anything but, "very capable entrepreneur and corporate manager?" Yes, he created AMAZON. And . . . ?
I can respect and admire his attempt to honor and instantiate Gerard K. O'Neil's space colonization ideas, but I do wish Jeff would find his own Elon to actually run the project. Better yet, wait a few years more and hire SpaceX to do what Blue Origin is struggling to accomplish--reliable, inexpensive, reusable access to LEO. If the ULA purchase succeeds, will Blue Origin and ULA between them have enough expertise and resources to perform all the tasks necessary to build a space corporation as big or bigger than SpaceX, while competing with SpaceX for new hires?

Always doubt Bezos. 24 years of BO and not a nanogram in orbit yet. Outsourcing most of Kuiper to mostly non-flight-proven rockets. And only 5 years late with 2 prototypes vs 6,000 working Starlinks. Throwing money at this when expendable rockets take ages to build, can't fly regularly, when launch teams and on-orbit and Kuiper teams lack experience won't bode well. I look forward to Bezos falling flat on his face publicly.

Trusting the man who destroyed the Multi-Billion dollar JRR Tolkien franchise with running a paper route is too much of a stretch for me, let alone to deliver on his promised space endeavors...

Unless Musk has been lying about his views on free speech, I will NEVER use Project Kuiper. I do not trust Bezos. I do welcome the competition though.
