That's great reacting Dawn! You'll have to get a Groucho pair of glasses with the nose, eyebrows and mustache. Unfortunately as they moved into the 1940s they were forced by circumstances to do a lot of inferior films. Chico was an addicted gambler and needed quick money. They lost their best writers. But there are still some classic gags and especially Groucho songs, like "Lydia, the tattooed lady".
I grew up watching Marx Bros movies and their humor never ages. Pure gold from start to finish. Also, kudos to Dumont, who plays Mrs Claypool in this one. She’s the ever present straight woman and butt of Groucho’s gags, but was loved by all and had her own immaculate timing.
“Margaret Dumont's screen persona was that of a stolid, wealthy society matron, which is exactly what she was: her husband, John Moller, was a millionaire industrialist, and she often commuted to filming locations from her mansions in Palm Springs, California, and Paris, France. Dumont on first joining the Marx Brothers act: "After three weeks as a leading lady, Groucho had pushed me out of windows, pulled chairs out from under me, broiled steaks in the fireplace of my apartment, put frogs in my bathtub and made my life miserable, on the stage and off." In most of her interviews and press profiles, Dumont preserved the myth of her on-screen character: the wealthy, regal woman who never quite understood the jokes. However, in a 1942 interview with the World Wide Features press syndicate, Dumont said, "Scriptwriters build up to a laugh but they don't allow any pause for it. That's where I come in. I ad lib-it doesn't matter what I say-just to kill a few seconds so you can enjoy the gag. I have to sense when the big laughs will come and fill in, or the audience will drown out the next gag with its own laughter." "I'm not a stooge, I'm a straight lady. There's an art to playing straight. You must build up your man, but never top him, never steal the laughs from him." (IMDb/Wikipedia) Happy Birthday, Margaret Dumont!”
So glad you so enjoyed one of my favorite comedy teams! Lovely suggestions down below. I also love "Horse Feathers", though it lacks one of the essentials to a Marx Brothers product: Margaret Dumont. Dumont was the tall, dark lady. She excelled at playing stuffy, dignified women, and all her characters are put through all sorts of antics by the brothers, especially Groucho (the mustachio'ed fellow). Every once in a while, especially in "Animal Crackers", you can see her trying not to break up watching and listening to them. Here's a tiny little documentary about her and her career: ruclips.net/video/WxtePJ8ehnU/видео.html What she says about being the "straight man" is absolutely right - the straight man almost never gets the laugh, but without the straight man, the comic is lost. For the comedy team of Abbott and Costello, Abbott was known as one of the greatest straight men in the business. That's one of the great things about the Brothers: each of them was comic and straight man for the next: There's a sort of order the chaos of the Brothers: Groucho can get under anyone's skin except Chico and Harpo. Chico can undermine anyone, including Groucho with his inane understanding logic and language. And Harpo can frustrate even Chico (with whom he's often paired at the start of the movies). I love all the brothers (including a fourth one, Zeppo, who isn't in "Night at the Opera"), but I have a special place in my heart for Chico, the "Italian" piano-playing brother. Aside from Zeppo, he's the one least mentioned, least appreciated. But he's the glue between verbal, wise-cracking Groucho, whose characters are often interested in climbing the ladder they really despise, and mute, not-quite-of-this-plane Harpo. It wouldn't be a team without him, and the one in the middle is often overlooked. Plus, those hands on the piano!! Plus that easy, butter-melting smile! Incidentally, the richly-voiced German actor is a comic standby, the great and wonderful Sig Ruman, one of my favorite comic supporting actors.
Groucho's mustache and eyebrows were actually greasepaint. Each brothers were accomplished musicians. Especially Harpo (harp) and Chico (piano) and would play those instruments in each movie.
My favorite line "I saw Mrs. Claypool first... well, her mother saw her first, but there's no point in bringing the Civil War into this"! Making fun of someone being around during the Civil War era would have been a great joke in the 1930s. lol
Dawn Marie: you reacted to this movie exactly how I did lo those many years ago. My chosen careers as editor, typesetter/typographer, and librarian were stimulated by watching "A Night at the Opera." Eventually I watched most of the Marx Brothers movies and reveled in their hilarity and especially the WORD PLAY and visual jokes. You are the perfect foil for the antics of these comic geniuses. Enjoy as many of their films you have time for. Lots of great suggestions here in the comments. Thanks for taking the time to celebrate Groucho, Chico, and Harpo (you'll meet another Marx Bro in their other flix).
This film and Duck Soup have been my all-time favorites since I was 10 years old. This movie was also the reason why I went to see Il Trovatore (without battleships, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, or other mishaps) at the Metropolitan Opera. I am now a fully-certified opera nerd. One love has lead to another.
I'm so happy you found this movie. No one else bothers watching these fabulous old movies and they are classics for a reason - because they are so good. There are so many Marx Brother movies worth watching and they will put another huge smile on your face.
Wow, never thought I'd see someone reacting to a Marx Brothers movie. Love it! Some others you might enjoy: A Night in Casablanca, A Day at the Races, Horse Feathers, Monkey Business, and Animal Crackers.
A night in Casablanca came out the same year as Casablanca and they wrote a letter to Groucho telling him they were going to sue. Groucho wrote back they sent him another Letter asking him to explain the first one he wrote back never heard from them again. If you ever find it it’s in Letters to and from Groucho Marx the very opening of the book
Glad you saw my favorite, Duck Soup. You can't go wrong with Monkey Business, Horsefeathers or Animal Crackers either. Beware. Some jokes are dated. You can hear them explained on dvd commentaries though.
Horse Feathers and Duck Soup are well worth reviewing! Thank you for reviewing some Marx Bros! Night at the Opera, the new studio tried to impose more of a plot. The earlier ones are pure, glorious anarchy! Love this one as well.
Your laugh is contagious. I’ve seen this movie a bunch of times and I haven’t giggled through it this much since the first time. 😂 (Subscribed! Can’t wait to go through your previous vids. 💚)
I loved your giggling reaction. The Marx Brothers' humor is first and foremost anarchistic in the best sense: they simply have no respect at all for so-called authorities. Coupled with witty dialogue and brilliant slapstick, this humor will probably still work perfectly in 100 years or more.
Highly recommend Harold Lloyd's Safety Last, it's a silent film, very funny. The whole film is s buildup to the most amazing stunt sequence ever filmed,, no CGI, no special effects, no green screen, all the stunts at height with no Safety wires, and only a painter's platform, with a tiny mattress, 16 ft below him, and if he fell he would have been killed.
very fun watching you watch the marx brothers for the first time.... experiencing them for the first time thru another set of eyes... very fun. i would like to put a plug in for "The Thin Man" with william powell and myrna loy...
My dad introduced me to the the Marx Brothers long ago...he gloried in telling tells of heading to Minneapolis to see them live. My mother, of course, thought they were a bit on the crude side. It was so much fun to see your reactions. Their comedy is timeless, like all great comedieans.
Rest your facial muscles? No no, my dear. You need to exercise them by watching more Marx Brothers so next time they won't hurt so much! Feel the burn!
Want to give a hat tip to the late great Margaret Dumont, who was great as the lady who delivers straight lines like a pro. She's in a bunch of Marx Brothers movies. In interviews, she admitted she wanted to laugh, but couldn't, since that would break character. She's now famous for keeping a straight face in the face of silliness.
Kitty Carlisle was a very good singer and a patron of the opera (and the arts in general). She later married the well-known playwrite, Moss Hart (who often co-wrote with another famous playwrite, George S. Kaufman). She was very famous to American audiences in the '50s and '60s as a panelist on popular TV game shows, like To Tell The Truth, What's My Line and I've Got A Secret, among others.
Great reaction to this timeless classic. The best of the rest are the Paramount comedies they did before this one, in which their brother Zeppo was the fourth member of the group.
the scene with Harpo playing the harp....one of the greatest scenes in all of hollywood. he absolutely cast a spell on the extras, no acting, just plain emotional response to a musical performance. and 89 years later, Harpo captivated you too. btw, Chico is pronounced chick - o, not like the spanish chee - ko.
Groucho wears glasses, has the big, black mustache, and spouts wisecracks and insults. Chico wears the peasant cap, plays piano, and speaks with an Italian accent. And Harpo has curly blond hair, doesn't speak, and plays the harp. In some of their movies, the 4th brother Zeppo appears as the straight man.
Just a couple comments. The pretty lady playing Rosa was Kitty Carlisle, who years later was a mainstay on 50s tv game shows, esp. To Tell the Truth. She was a passionate crusader for support of the Arts, becoming an elegant Society lady, and received several national arts recognitions as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The scene of chaos in their small ship room is considered one of the classics of early Hollywood comedies. So, sooo, funny !!!
It was a joy watching you watch this one. The Marx Brothers never made a bad film - looking forward to you and them, together again. And don’t forget W.C. Fields, also from the ‘30s and ‘40s. Thank you, Dawn.
I absolutely love this reaction, best reaction ever… it’s such a shame that hardly anybody reacts to the Marx Brothers. For me personally, they beat Chaplin, the Three Stooges, and all the others combined. Harpo will always be my favourite. to make people laugh out loud without uttering a word is truly an art form. Fingers crossed you’ll react to all of their movies, you will certainly have a great time 😊
AHHHH I LOVE THE MARX BROTHERS. This and Duck Soup are their best movies. FYI and I am sure someone else pointed this out but Groucho had a grease paint mustache. Started to do it in Vaudeville and it just stuck.
The Marx's were kids when they went on the vaudeville stage, Groucho often played a teacher or an older character in the act using a grease paint mustache. Harpo could speak, but he had a thick Platter-dutch/Yiddish accent which didnt work so well in small towns in the Midwest (he was also not as fast as Groucho or Chico so he eventually just depended on sight gags for his comedy. Please, Please, Please watch Duck Soup
Lots of things in Marx Brothers comedies are a bit surreal, like how a harp just magically appears whenever Harpo’s musical scene comes up. Another is that Harpo takes nothing seriously, *except* his harp playing. As you can see in the piano/harp sequence, he clowns his way through the piano, but when he starts on the harp, he takes it very seriously.
I remember watching this when I was young and I laughed so hard at the scene where the stage background continues to change up and down simultaneously as the actor was singing. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Welllcome Back to classic films Queen Dawn Marie 🤍 😉 so glad you enjoyed it!!! Hugs , stay positive, unique and hillarious!!!! Have a great Day, lots of love Queen 🤍
A friend of mine did a paper in college about The Marx Brothers, he made the point that Groucho talks all the time and you never know what he's talking about, and Harpo never speaks and you always know what he means. Edit: You should really watch "The Three Stooges" short films. The original Curly was never in a full length film. A lot of the early film stars were from the Vaudeville stage. That would include Abbott and Costello, W. C. Fields, Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy.
One of your best reactions ever - and that's saying a lot!!!!!! My favorite Marx Brothers movie is their next one, "A Day At The Races", but I love this one, I love Duck Soup. What a special experience it was to watch you discover these guys! And when you were getting emotional watching Harpo play, I always get emotional when I see Chico or Harpo play. I love the way Chico plays piano.
Fun fact: This was the first film the Brothers made at MGM after leaving Paramount. Some MGM exec loved them and insisted the studio offer them a contract, the only issue was he never liked the fact that in their previous films they never helped anyone and were only out for themselves so from here on out their movies always involved a plot where they helped the supporting characters, usually some couple that were in love. But since being con-artists was part of their schtick, they continued to do that and just happened to help the young couple in love as a byproduct.
Groucho's moustache isn't real. He uses shoe polish. He used to use a prop moustache in his early days but one time forgot it and used shoe polish to give himself one. He did that ever since.
After having watched this film so many times, the next best thing is watching it through the eyes of someone who hasn't seen it but really gets how good they were. They were truly unique.
As Arthur (born Adolph) Marx never spoke in his films, I figured I'd just post some quotes by him... "I am the most fortunate self-taught harpist and non-speaking actor who has ever lived." "The man who first inspired me was a guy called Gookie. Gookie had nothing to do with the theater. He rolled cigars in the window of a cigar store on Lexington Avenue. When he got going good he was completely lost in work, so absorbed that he had no idea what a comic face he was making. His tongue lolled out in a fat roll, his cheeks puffed out and his eyes popped out and crossed themselves. Over the years, in every comedy act or movie I ever worked in, I've thrown in a Gookie at least once." Talking about working in vaudeville: "If an audience didn't like us, we had no trouble finding it out. We were pelted with sticks, bricks, spitballs, cigar butts, peach pits and chewed-out stalks of sugar cane. We took all this without flinching - until (the Marx Brothers' mother and manager) Minnie gave us the high-sign that we'd collected our share of the receipts. Then we started throwing stuff back at the audience and run like hell for the railroad station the second the curtain came down." "Cheap hotels in the South and Southwest were apparently set up as bug sanctuaries by some Audubon Society for Insects. Fleas, ticks, bedbugs, cockroaches, beetles, scorpions and ants, having no enemies, attacked with fearless abandon. They had the run of the house and they knew it. After a while you just let them bite. Fighting back was useless. For every bug you squashed, a whole fresh, bloodthirsty platoon would march out of the woodwork. In one hotel hotel the ants were so bad that each bed was set on four pots of oxalic acid." "When you lose something irreplaceable, you don't mourn for the thing you lost. You mourn for yourself." "If things get too much for you and you feel the whole world's against you, go stand on your head. If you can think of anything crazier to do, do it." (IMDb) Happy Birthday, Harpo Marx!
YES, Please react to more of The Marx Brothers. Dawn, watching you laugh and giggle through this reaction was so adorably cute. Some of their films are weak in plot, but that never changed the entertainment they provided. It's been a long time, but because of your reaction I now feel the urge to go back and rewatch many of their films. I remember "A Night At The Opera" being one of my favorites of theirs. Another one I remember enjoying a lot was "A Day At The Races". Already you see how talented these entertainers were. Groucho Marx is my favorite due to his incredibly razor sharp improvisational wit. Watch anything you can by him. He was arguably funnier in "on-the-fly" conversations than most if not all other skilled comedians. He hosted a game show called "You Bet Your Life" and was hilarious when interacting with the game show contestants.

"I'm not a stooge, I'm a straight lady. There's an art to playing straight. You must build up your man, but never top him, never steal the laughs from him." (IMDb/Wikipedia)
Happy Birthday, Margaret Dumont!”
Here's a tiny little documentary about her and her career: ruclips.net/video/WxtePJ8ehnU/видео.html
What she says about being the "straight man" is absolutely right - the straight man almost never gets the laugh, but without the straight man, the comic is lost.
Making fun of someone being around during the Civil War era would have been a great joke in the 1930s. lol
I'm glad you enjoyed it so much and hope you will take a deep dive into the brilliant comedy of Thr Marx Brothers!
The Marx Brothers were brilliant, this movie’s still hilarious to this day
87 years old and still makes you laugh. That's talent.
You have the cutest laugh. It's easy to laugh with you. I've been a fan of the Marx Brothers for about 5 decades and I'm very glad you enjoyed them.
I think that you would like "Bringing Up Baby" and "Arsenic and Old Lace". Both comedies starring Cary Crant.
There is no bad Cary Grant movie.
"Monkey Business" is another great one, and it's the only of their movies where Zeppo has a major part.
I'm so happy you found this movie. No one else bothers watching these fabulous old movies and they are classics for a reason - because they are so good. There are so many Marx Brother movies worth watching and they will put another huge smile on your face.
Your constant giggling at these guys just melted my heart!
Wow, never thought I'd see someone reacting to a Marx Brothers movie. Love it! Some others you might enjoy: A Night in Casablanca, A Day at the Races, Horse Feathers, Monkey Business, and Animal Crackers.
A Night In Casablanca and Duck Soup are the only of theirs I've seen in full, but both were well worth the nickel admission!
A night in Casablanca came out the same year as Casablanca and they wrote a letter to Groucho telling him they were going to sue. Groucho wrote back they sent him another
Letter asking him to explain the first one he wrote back never heard from them again.
They were only in a handful.
Day at the Races
Duck Soup
Horse Feathers
And a few more.
"There ain't no sanity clause" 😂
Horse Feathers and Duck Soup are well worth reviewing! Thank you for reviewing some Marx Bros! Night at the Opera, the new studio tried to impose more of a plot. The earlier ones are pure, glorious anarchy! Love this one as well.
Great reaction!!! If you get a chance, check out the comedies of Laurel and Hardy. You won't be disappointed.
Your laugh is contagious. I’ve seen this movie a bunch of times and I haven’t giggled through it this much since the first time. 😂
(Subscribed!
If you enjoyed this, do "Duck Soup". Rufus T. Firefly!
very fun watching you watch the marx brothers for the first time.... experiencing them for the first time thru another set of eyes... very fun. i would like to put a plug in for "The Thin Man" with william powell and myrna loy...
Duck soup, A Day at the Races, Animal Crackers and Horsefeathers all great films by the Marx bros
My dad introduced me to the the Marx Brothers long ago...he gloried in telling tells of heading to Minneapolis to see them live. My mother, of course, thought they were a bit on the crude side. It was so much fun to see your reactions. Their comedy is timeless, like all great comedieans.
Strange but true….A Day At The Races and A Night At The Opera are also album titles by Queen, so there’s that
Groucho's mustache and eyebrows are grease paint.
No love for Animal Crackers? That's my fav after this one!
Rest your facial muscles? No no, my dear. You need to exercise them by watching more Marx Brothers so next time they won't hurt so much! Feel the burn!
It's So Cool to see Younger Generation's Enjoy These Film's too
You know those novelty glasses with the big nose and mustache attached to them? They’re all based on Groucho Marx’s face.
I need to watch more Marx Brothers stuff. I'm more of a Three Stooges fan.
YOUR AMAZING. ALL YOUR REACTIONS ARE ENTERTAINING
A modern woman who enjoys the Marx Brothers?! My heart! 🥹
Fingers crossed you’ll react to all of their movies, you will certainly have a great time 😊
The mustache and eyebrows are painted on.
Such a joy to see you laugh Dawn - hope you get to watch some Laurel and Hardy classics 🎥😂😂😂🤩🙌👍
But I have to rent or buy it!!! Disgusting
I had so much fun not only watching clips of this movie but even more fun was watching your reaction!
I have! It's on Patreon just now and will be on RUclips next week 😁
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So glad you found the Marx Brothers! Can't wait for the next one!
Welllcome Back to classic films Queen Dawn Marie 🤍 😉 so glad you enjoyed it!!! Hugs , stay positive, unique and hillarious!!!! Have a great Day, lots of love Queen 🤍
Oh I enjoyed it very much! Thanks so so much for being here! 🥰♥
@@DawnMarieX 🤗 love your reactions !
Say, is it my imagination or is it getting crowded in here?
"Do you have everything Julius?" "I haven't had any complaints yet!"
All of the Marx brothers' movies are must see.
Glad to see a youngster appreciate the Marx Brothers!
My Dawn Marie, my Dawn Patrol!
Damn, someone's got good taste in films.
You need to watch Duck Soup!!
@asaka616 He absolutely does NOT use shoe polish for His moustache! He used Greasepaint!
Love seeing you laugh Dawn!!
And let's not forget their mother, Minnie Marx, who took them in the vaudeville art.
Duck Soup and Monkey Business are two of the best movies ever made.
And Animal Crackers!
Not many Americans make me laugh, but Marx bros 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
After having watched this film so many times, the next best thing is watching it through the eyes of someone who hasn't seen it but really gets how good they were. They were truly unique.
As Arthur (born Adolph) Marx never spoke in his films, I figured I'd just post some quotes by him...
"I am the most fortunate self-taught harpist and non-speaking actor who has ever lived."
"The man who first inspired me was a guy called Gookie. Over the years, in every comedy act or movie I ever worked in, I've thrown in a Gookie at least once."
Talking about working in vaudeville: "If an audience didn't like us, we had no trouble finding it out. We were pelted with sticks, bricks, spitballs, cigar butts, peach pits and chewed-out stalks of sugar cane. We took all this without flinching - until (the Marx Brothers' mother and manager) Minnie gave us the high-sign that we'd collected our share of the receipts. Then we started throwing stuff back at the audience and run like hell for the railroad station the second the curtain came down."
"Cheap hotels in the South and Southwest were apparently set up as bug sanctuaries by some Audubon Society for Insects. In one hotel hotel the ants were so bad that each bed was set on four pots of oxalic acid."
"When you lose something irreplaceable, you don't mourn for the thing you lost. You mourn for yourself."
"If things get too much for you and you feel the whole world's against you, go stand on your head. If you can think of anything crazier to do, do it." (IMDb)
Happy Birthday, Harpo Marx!
Groucho always has the mustache. It's put on with shoe polish.
Their first five movies are all great.... "Coconuts", "Animal Crackers", "Monkey Business", "Horse Feathers" and "Duck Soup"
Just awesome choice, Dawn… Your next Marx Bros has to be Duck Soup… accept no substitutes…
Keep your eyes peeled 👀
I enjoy very much watching someone discover the Marx Brothers. Next movie should be their 1st one
The Coconuts
Oh I went with Duck Soup but I intend to watch them all! 😁
@@DawnMarieX they are hysterical, the last on "Love happy" is Marlyn Monroe 1st movie apperance
I so enjoyed watching you enjoy yourself....more Marx Brothers...please?
There aint no Sanity Clause....probably the funniest line I ever heard....and the looks to camera from Groucho....pure class.
duck soup. _JC
