The reason everyone had their windows open was most people couldn't afford AC in the 50's. They were like $350 which for a blue collar worker would have to work over 200 to 300 hours to buy one.

I grew up in the 1950's and don't remember anyone having one. According to Wiki:
In 1955, although it was not unusual to find air conditioning in movie theaters, supermarkets, or office buildings, fewer than 2% of the nation's residences had air conditioning of any kind, and less than half a percent had a central air conditioning system." (And this figure was skewed by how many were in the south. In the 1960 Hitchcock movie, Psycho, the office Marian works in still did not have AC, and that was Arizona.)

Grace Kelly is a timeless class act. I liked Jimmy Stewart as well. Raymond Burr, the bad guy went on to become Perry Mason, the first of the courtroom TV attorneys. My Great Grandmother loved him in that role. I got to see this in the theater a couple of weeks ago and it was crowded. Timeless classic. Thanks Michelle and Natalie especially for your prayers for my mother!

If this film was made today with a cast of this caliber, the budget goes over $100 million😂😂. In all seriousness it’s this movie, Psycho, and Vertigo that are my favorite Hitchcock films.

Yes, I remember Burr in the American version of the first Godzilla movie. He always had a weight problem but Hitchcock wanted him a bit heavier, wearing the glasses and gray in his hair. At the time, Hitchcock had a falling out with David O. Selznick (who among other things, was the producer for the 1939 blockbuster Gone With The Wind), so he had Burr made up to look like Selznick. (And he does quite closely, if you look at a photo of Selznick.)

Always liked the fact that Rear Window was a movie about a guy playing detective and solving a murder, while confined to a wheel chair. Then years later Raymond Burr would star in a television show called 'Ironside'. A show about a police detective confined to a wheel chair who solved murders. 😂

Absolutely love this movie. One of the best parts of this movie is that there is no actual soundtrack. The "soundtrack" is the ambient noise of the neighborhood. This is seriously one of my favorite Hitchcock films. Right up there with "Vertigo", "North by Northwest" and "Psycho".
Also, another Grace Kelly movie that everybody should watch is "To Catch a Thief". Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, how can you go wrong with that?

Hitchcock actually built an apartment building as the set for this movie. Some of the actors even lived in the "apartments" during the filming.
The composer was played by Ross Bagdasarian, who (among other things) created Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Raymond Burr, who played Lars Thorwald, was one of the first celebrities to have his own winery. Raymond Burr Vineyards still exists in Healdsburg, California, even though Burr died at the age of 76 in 1993.

Interesting note: The set is an indoor set that took up the entire Soundstage 18 at Paramount. But it wasn’t tall enough to fit the apartment building so Paramount dug out the floor by 30’ to make room.

They did a spoof in an episode of The Simpsons, Bart Of Darkness, where Bart, having broken his leg while trying to jump in the pool, ends up in a cast, and uses a telescope to spy on his neighbors, until he thinks Ned Flanders killed his wife. He tries telling Lisa, who doesn't believe him, until she notices Flanders bury something in the backyard.

So glad you watched this classic, there are so many amazing movies from the '40's and 50's that get over looked. I hope you get a chance to see many more. Your reactions are always a breath of fresh air and I'm so happy you take into account when the movie were made because it was a time when they were inventing many of the technics that are now so common place. To Catch A Thief is a great Grace Kelly movie and Harvey is one of James Stewarts that gets passed over. I really think you'd love both. "Rope" is a Hitchcock that was entirely filmed in one apartment. It also starred Jimmy Stewart. But my favorite Hitchcock films are from the 1940s in black and white- Shadow of a Doubt and Notorious.
PS Growing up in the 60s and 70s in Boston, I shared a bedroom with my brother in the attic of a Victorian two family house. It gets very humid and over 90 F in Boston, No AC, on the worst days we had to sleep on the porch. It hit well over 100F with unbearable humidity in that attic. It was like a jungle environment.

Yes, one of my favorites. There are two (non-Hitchcock) remakes, one based closely on the Hitchcock movie, and another based closely on the book by the same name. The Hitchcock one is by far superior.
Hitchcock started making movies in the silent movie era. I continue to be amazed at how many, all different genres but still with the Hitchcock touch. Some are so-so (my subjective opinion) while others are brilliant.

Super classic movie. The story was based on the short story "It Had to be Murder" by Cornell Woolrich, originally published in the pulp magazine Dime Detective in 1942, though I think Hitchcock did a really good job presenting and expanding the setting with the other characters and neighbors from the source material.

It wasn't pre-A/C but it was before everybody had one, especially people who lived in two-room (or less) apartments. (The wiring probably couldn't handle a unit in every window.)
Sleeping on the balcony had its advantages - like airflow.
FYI - if you ever plan to spy on your neighbors keep away from the window. Ideally you can hang sheer curtains a few feet back from the window and stay behind them with the lights off. You can see through them and out the window easily, but they can't see you. IF you need a light on, put it on the window side of the sheer curtains and pointed away from your hiding place.
The bad guy was played by Raymond Burr, who became famous as television lawyer Perry Mason. His second-most famous role was that of a detective named Ironside, who (along with his little team) solved cases while confined to a wheelchair.

AC goes back to the turn of the century (1900 that is) and one thing important about it was that it also dehumidified the air in addition to cooling. (The cooling aspect goes back to experiments by Ben Franklin and devices in the 1800's were used to make ice. (In the South, there were "swamp coolers" which operate on a different principal.) Willis Carrier is credited with the first AC unit.
According to Wiki: "In 1902, he installed his first air-conditioning system, in the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing & Publishing Company in Brooklyn, New York. His invention controlled both the temperature and humidity, which helped maintain consistent paper dimensions and ink alignment at the printing plant."
The earliest AC ones used dangerous refrigerants like ammonia but Freon was invented abut 1930, which changed everything. But the units were super-big (and expensive) at first, so often they were added to movie theaters - audiences would attend an awful movie just to sit in the AC.

"I wish I could be creative."
"Oh sweetie, you are. You have a great talent for creating difficult situations."
Grace Kelly, am I right? 😍
Fun Fact: All the apartments in Thorwald's (Raymond Burr) building had electricity and running water, and could be lived in.
Casting Notes Fact: Grace Kelly was offered this film and On The Waterfront (1954) at the same time. She chose this movie instead because she thought the role of Lisa, who worked in the world of fashion, as she once did, suited her better.
Natural Soundtrack Fact: All of the sound in this movie is diegetic, meaning that all the music, speech, and other sounds all come from within the world of the movie (with the exception of non-diegetic orchestral music heard in the first three shots of the movie).
Method Director Fact: According to Georgine Darcy, when the man and woman on the fire escape struggle to get in out of the rain was based on a prank by Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Each actor and actress in the apartment complex facing Jeff's (James Stewart) rear window wore an earpiece through which they could receive Hitchcock's directions. Hitchcock told the man to pull the mattress in one direction and told the woman to pull in the opposite direction. Unaware that they had received conflicting directions, the couple began to fight and struggled to get the mattress inside once the crew began filming. The resulting mayhem, in which one of the couple is tossed inside the window with the mattress, provided humor and a sense of authenticity, which Hitchcock liked. He was so pleased with the result that he did not order another take.

A/C was very uncommon in new York in 1954. Central air is still uncommon in aprtments, today. It was not uncommon for people to sleep on their balconies, or even the yard, as Thomas Sowell describes, in Harlem. Crime was not as rampant as it is today, also as posited by Thomas Sowell.

My favorite Hitchcock masterpiece! Glad you enjoyed it. Saw it in theaters twice; it was fun! Recommend other Hitchcock films: Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder, North by Northwest.
Other thrillers to watch not directed by Hitchcock but might as well be: Charade (1963) and Wait Until Dark (1967)
If you’re interested in watching a parody, try the Season 6 premiere of The Simpsons

@@ForceOfLightEntertainment I think you will like it because it has a strange theological ideas. It's based on the novella: The Hellbound Heart from Clive Barker, who was one of the most famous horror writers in the 80's and 90's. Not only that but Clive actually wrote the screenplay and directed the movie because he didn't want a botched job from the studio.

Hitch was making a joke about how we are all voyeurs, we movie-lovers. Suggestion: a couple of titles for you that you might enjoy -- Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) and His Girl Friday (1940) both starring Cary Grant. (If you haven't seen them already.)

Nice job! You do need to learn to find Hitchcock's famous cameo's. Your next Hitchcock adventure should be "The Birds", "North by Northwest", or one of the most difficult watches (requires multiple watches to fully appreciate) "Vertigo". Do all 3.

Dudes, like Crime and Punishment and Anna Karenina this film is a classic. It is shown at retrospectives. It is taught in universities. It has stood the test of time. And those are just three reasons this film is far superior to any of the disposible and stale popcorn junk that comes out of Hollywood today, films which will be, artistically speaking, largely forgotten. Oh and by the way, this film is about watching movies, making sense of movies narratively, and turning viewers like you into voyeurs.

Michelle, Natalie if you are a fan of Alfred Hitchcock’s Work you might like North by North West along with Vertigo. I don’t believe Grace Kelly was in very many movies before she became an actual princess. And little known fact, Alfred Hitchcock always made an appearance in his movies.
