  • I inspect the limited edition model from The Tank Museum of the first tank Little Willie. The model is 3d printed and has been on order for several months.

Despite the quality of some of the printing I’m confident you will produce a really nice model of a significant tank. Looking forward to the build!

I wish some kit manufacturer would make a plastic model of this tank.

@@Ken-kl4ym , that would be far better, I don't know if revel or airfix still do kits but the tamia ( ? ) models look well detailed. I would've been mega dissatisfied with the finish on the 3D rubbish

Doesn't meet the cost/manufacture benefit curve. After R&D, new tooling and production in plastic, the price to consumer would be prohibitive and or interest in product would not be sufficent for that era.

It's too niche to interest mainstream kit manufacturers.

That looks like a very nice model. I'm born & bred in Lincoln & am currently working on a 3D printable 'Little Willie' myself. I wish I'd known about this one! Regarding your kit. I don't want to teach you to suck eggs at all. The tracks are resin 3D prints, whilst the main hull appears to be FDM (Filament) printed. To 'get rid' of the layer lines on the hull, use primer filler rattle can paint. I use Motip Spray Putty, which works wonders. I hope you do build it as I'd like to see it in all its glory.

I would be interested in a model of this subject if the quality were good enough. It seems injection moulded styrene is still king - the best balance of fidelity, convenience, price and availability.

I'm not really into 3D printing, let alone 3D printed model kits. That might change of course. It probably will. So far I have only ordered and put together one 3D model, that of the famous red & white moon rocket from Tintin, standing about 1 metre tall. I didn't say I BUILT it because it arrived in just three pieces.
Little Willie over here seems to be a nice model but again there is not a lot of actual building going on, which for me is where the most fun is. Most work seems to be going into removing the hundreds of sprues. Of course it also needs painting and weathering. If this is going to be the future of modeling than I'm not sure what to think about it.
Anyhow: success with putting Little Willie together!

I have built a few printed kits a detail parts for other kits and the quality varies wildly. Some are like resin and others are like straw bails. I do expect the quality to rise over the years but little Willie was a bit disappointing.

Sir, you put the upper body on the wrong way! The open side is the rear! the Windowside is the front! The angled lower bodyside is the front too.

At £90 they should be ashamed at the quality of that model. " the supports are left on to protect the parts " translates as we are too lazy to remove this ourselves.

I’m planning to remove the detail from the hull surface, fill and sand the hull plating. I will then add the rivets and other improvements I have identified on the kit. I’m considering it a ‘challenge’ 😁
