  • Lightrooms Calibration tool is probably the most underrated color grading tool. Here is how I use this feature to color grade my landscape photos.

Christian, Today’s presentation is very helpful for me to understand more about the calibration tool, and the colour grading tool as well. In your brilliant illustration of the sunshine on the reefs, it is obviously that the reefs and the sky are more sharply and beautifully colored and illuminated. I am grateful for your outstanding interpretation of the method that is a very important reference to me.

This is a great explanation of the Calibration … I’ve avoided using it because I just couldn’t understand how to use it as you explain. I would be interested in another explanation from you … you often (if not always) bring down the radius and increase the detail in the sharpening stage. I have never understood why you do that.

Thank you so much for the comment! Regarding the sharpening, this tutorial might bring some more insight to the topic: ruclips.net/video/hL9O7OhoIkg/видео.html

Thanks Christian, for explaining the "Calibration" section so lucidly. I used to rarely use this tool, that even by hit and go.

Thanks again Christian. This is another master class in editing explaining how you use the calibration tool and why. I also appreciate your section on masking.

Great video. My major issue with Lightroom is the fact that they added all these great masking tools but there is no ability to apply all the presets to those masks. That one change would be a huge game changer.

Thanks for the comment! I have to admit I never tried applying presets to masks, but I thought I saw a preset menu somewhere in the masking settings, not 100% sure though!

@@ThePhlogPhotography Will check to see. If so that would make my day. Masking certain effects is a key part of my workflow for most photos I work on. Having to create certain effects then output them all to photoshop so I can mask them is not only a huge pain and slow, but also ruins my ability to take advantage of the "person" masking options which allow for selecting specific things like skin which I was so happy to see added to Lightroom.

An excellent video. This and Nigel Danson’s video on colour are the most helpful.
He suggests downloading a colour wheel and using the HSL panel and the calibration panel to help see the differences.

I love the calibration tab. I tend to take out contrast and I’ll peg them all to 100 (depending on the time of day and shoot) as a preset and I’ll adjust from there.
I usually leave the blue at 100 though. I know it sounds like a lot but I tend to shoot mid day where there is harsh lighting and it makes the image look more round.

Just, Wow! This will help me step up my editing with confidence in split toning and even better, the calibration section. I have used the blue saturation slider at end of editing, but you have helped me with another level of understanding. I have a number of landscape images from my recent trip to Antarctica. I can't wait to get working on them! Thank you!

Its a great tool to use when editing Kolari Chrome filter images from a full spectrum infrared camera. Instant red / pinks & oranges. Not used yet on normal images but will experiment. Thank you

Thanks for another great tutorial. After speaking with Adobe Chat Support, I learned that the Shadow slider in the Calibration module is disabled on PSD files. This is a serious omission. 0:25

In my opinion you are one of the best lightroom editing channels. My question is have you ever considered capture one? Their software (IMO) has far superior color rendition and as good as you are with color I would love to see edits with that.

Thanks a lot that means so much to me! I wanted to give it a try a few times, but never found the time to install and test capture one so far. I'm sure I will give it a try in the future!

Mark Denny put it nicely to help the process and understand the difference between the HSL controls and calibration: HSL is for targeted local adjustments and calibration is for global adjustments.
