Excellent video! I'm just getting started with sewing and this is one of the best tutorials I've watched. I really appreciate how you explained basic serger function, needles, thread required based on the type of fabric, and what the finished stitch actually looks like. A lot of these details are omitted in the general "how to" videos. I feel more confident with my projects after watching this. It feels like a crime gaining all of this knowledge for free. You're absolutely incredible!

I was just about to take in some pants but then wondered to take in the inseam or the outer seam. I always turn to RUclips for solutions and there you were, a mature lady without all the immature nonsense of some other sites where they seem to think they will be an Emmy for best music and dialogue. You've presented a nice and informative video, thanks.

You are a woman of so many talents, Lily. I have had three different sewing machines in my life, but never a serger. You are so brave to sew without pinning. I'll have to give that a try. I learned to sew in 4-H, and they drilled, pin, pin, pin, lol. Thank you so much for this tutorial! This is a great way to upcycle our clothing. Blessings, prayers, love, and hugs, my beautiful friend………MaryEllen

Thanks so much MaryEllen, you'll have to pick up a Serger just for altering clothes, it really is convenient. I haven't bought any new pants in so long because I have so many, these were hanging in my closet, I still have a garments bags full of clothes I need to go through and give away and keep, the ones i'll keep i'm sure need altering of some sort.

Bad health aged me too. But Lily is a beautiful woman for sure. She carries herself like she went to finishing school but without being a snob to go with it. Seems like a lovely person.

While this works, I would have opened up the hem and stitched through to the raw edge of the bottom of the hem with straight stitch machine. Then, I would have used the serger. Noice that the seams are a bit wavy, and thats why. Pressing helps, and it is good for a very quick fix, which is what people want these days, rather than tailoring.Nice calm and clear presentation.

Nice video. You speak so clearly & that is very helpful. I used to sew a lot but "someone", (no names here husband), took my sewing room over for junk. I always made my kids clothes growing, including swim suits. When I babysat regularly I made clothes for the kids in my care. Now I'm lucky to find room & time to do more than repairs. I almost got a serger years & years ago but I got chicken about all the threading it right, etc... I would now if I sewed more but I'm pushing 66 very hard in a few weeks & I no longer have use for one to do more than a few things.
One question: Would I take in the legs of my new sweatpants the same way? I didn't know when I bought them that they were like the 60s elephant bell bottoms!! lol! I don't like to hem sweat fleece so for now I put shoelaces in the hem & tie them. I had elastic in them twice but they were not comfortable.

Watch the different materials. As some are more stretchy than others. So after sewing try on before you cut the excess.

The only prob I see is serging down to the hem and leave it that way. Other than that, it seems like an easy way to change the wide legs to more narrow. And, I do have a serger which I've had for about 30 yrs too!

Hey there, I just ordered some soft leather pants from ebay. They are straight leg, but very baggy around the hips. They fit at the waist (size 18). I was ready to resell them on ebay, since it would probably cost a fortune to make the pant more skinny. Then I stumbled across your video. awesome. Would you be able to do the same with leather pants? I can ship them to you. Please and thank you.

I bought some jogging pants (polyester/cotton mixed material) from a Gucci store last week. The waist is too big and the length is too long. The store manager said they can alter the pants for me for free. Should I trust them to do it? I’m worried the altering will damage the pants and make them not look original anymore. I don’t people to be able to tell that they’ve been altered either.

Hello Ms. Lilly. I don't know if you are still around but I love the tutorial. I am a new sewist and a male. I have what may not be so unique but not so common. I have a short rise of about 10-10.5 inches in the front. For years I have paid to have the rise shortened as avg size pants for gents is about 14 inches. I am 5'7" and about 89kg. Very muscular guy. your tapering video is great but how can I address or maybe you have a video that can show me how to shorten my rise. Total rise is 27.5 but the front is 10.5". Any tips are appreciated. I know this is an old vid but ..

A serger does that overlock stitch you find in your clothing seams. It overlocks the material edges and also can cut the excess material away. I'm still learning how to use mine. My brother works for a sewing machine repair shop and gave me one for Christmas a few years ago.
