I have a question? I am a newbie Sewist. I have seen some vids where they take it from the inside seam or the outside seam. Yours takes it from both seams of the leg. Which is correct? and why? Thanks. California sewing man.

You're welcome Angie.
THANKS!!! I had to watch the video a Couple of times, (my english is really not the best, i am danish) to get a idea how to do it right, but i just followed the steps, trusting the process, and the results was perfect!!! I just Got a sewing machine on my 23th birthday, and wanted to fix Pants and other clothes that i can’t fit anymore, after losing weight. This video gave me an idea of how to take Down the size, not Only for pants, but for upper clothes too!!❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼✂️📏🧵🪡👖👚👕👗👙
A advice is that you maybe show all the steps, one by one, in This video e.g. How to do one hole leg step by step, just one leg, but to show how to sew the right and left side together and Connect the stitch/sewing to the original stitch/sewing.🪡🤓
I Hope you understand my bad english😂 and again, thanks for This!!❤
Thanks for you input and sew happy you found my video helpful.
this was super informative! i’m a newbie at sewing but i really want to take in a pair of jeans since they look so cool! do you have any advice since jeans/denim are a much thicker material?
Use jeans machine sewing needles, you can buy it from my amazon store here is the link www.amazon.com/shop/colleenglea-fsbtv?listId=293E1FJCJIDUH&ref=idea_share_inf. I would recommend using a roller foot, here is a link to my tutorial for that technique ruclips.net/video/mjmD8TGN3H0/видео.html. Good luck Jan.
Perfect
Thank you Dorcas.
Yeh I think, it will work. Nice
Thank you and good luck.
🤘right on save me alot of money
Nice to know Yvette, sew happy you enjoyed the tutorial and thanks for commenting.
I really like the way you explain how to do this project. I really don't sew well and I get so confused trying to use a pattern & the ones I really like are not for size 50" bust so I end up just giving up. I've been able to mend my son's torn pants at the knees. Now I need to make his pants longer cause he is too skinny & I can't find affordable 28" waist 33" long soft jeans or nice pants. Just don't shop unless in a store & $20 cash is allot for pants.
Thanks for sharing Azra.
Thank you so much Coleen. Wish I could find a college tutor like you. Would you consider making a garment from scratch so we can see how to fit on a tailor dummy. X
Yes I would Margaret, I want my videos to be interactive and the are some tools and features that RUclips have recently made accessible to RUclips creators, that I think will be amazing for me to teach with.
I need 100K subscribers before I'm able to use these features. But saying that, there are others in the community asking for me to make a garment from scratch. I will see what I can do!
Hooray! This has been a bane! I have been losing weight and it's just stupid to buy new clothes - and my fit is queer (boy hips). Thank you thank you thank you ❤❤❤ Subscribed and hit the bell. 🎉🎉
Thank you!
You video was very helpful.
Thanks!

Stay beautiful.
Thank you! You too!
Thanks a lot beautiful soul
You are so welcome Mo Z.
Hi Colleen, gave a like! Just wondering though, I am someone who doesnt have a sewing machine. Do you have any tutorials on taking in something with just a needle and thread?
Not yet Matall! I would recommend using a back stitch, if you are going to try this tutorial.
I like your voice and accent.
Thank you purple gatorade.
Hi Colleen very helpful easy enough for me to follow thankyou. Could you use a darker Taylor's chalk for people who,s eyes aren't so good like mine. Thankyou for the great tips . I just subscribed to your channel it's great👍Julie from the uk
Yes I can, and thanks for subscribing Julie.
Hi! Thanks for the tutorial. You are taking in the pants from both the outer and inner seams, correct? Could I just take in from the inner seam... Why/why not?
Yes that's right Laurel, and yes you can just take in from the inner seam. It's about the grain line in garments, that enable them to fall correctly on the body so that there is no twisting or miss alinement.
I wish you'd shown how to decide how much to take in, how to do your finishing stitches, and how to hem...basically the important bits.
Hi Ddrhl. I did what was necessary for the look I was going for, which included all the important bits for this project. Different styles of pants require different finishes as you have mentioned. There will be many other pant adjustment tutorials coming up on my channel so stay tuned.
Awful video, very amateurish with much cutting of corners, the top of the tapering was dreadful,
Pamela Rickers
It was so pedantic
I thought she was advertising the ruler
Totally agree with you
Ddrhl
You could always place another pair of pants
that you like over the wide ones
and be guided by the difference in order
to know how much to take in.
Does that make sense ❓
@@lyndadale6255 NO! ,! It doesn't make sense. If there is a beginner on here, and you tell them to measure buy a pair of pants that they already have that they like, to not tell them that they have to leave an inch for the hem, could make some very tight pants for them!
Hello, thank you for your video! Could you please advise how to determine how far up the outside seam to take in? Thanks!
It depends on your body shape and the fit you are trying to achieve.
Thanks! So I should really take in the legs on both sides of each leg? Not only on the outer or only on the inner part?
For the best results Yes!
How to take in pants at the waist hand sewing
Very well done But, did you do inner leg and outer leg the same way?
It depends on the shape of the pants, choose to sew the inner or outer leg first then try on the pants to check for the fit. If you need to take it in more sew the opposite seam. I hope that helps sisher4. Thanks for commenting.
Can anyone help re reducing crotch length in trousers? Currently sit low on waist which is great because I am only 5ft tall. However, crotch is nearer my knees! How do I go about altering them? Have dabbled but unsuccessfully. Not sure if lowering waistband is a better idea than undoing crutch area and taking up. Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.
Hello Kaye. This is a challenging one, it depends on how much needs to be removed, and when it comes to the crotch area on pants there some much fitting and adjustment that needs to be done, you will need to go back to the pattern and make further adjustments, I would recommend doing a test sample. I really can not advise without seeing them on you.
Because I had a,ready had a plan but not marked yet, please advise why not just use yardstick to draw line from widest part of hip to hem? Seems quicker perhaps. These mostly need width at hemline narrowed. Thanks. Apologies from someone always wanting to know the ‘why.’
Great question, yes you can use a yardstick if there is shaping (curve) line to the leg. Thanks for commenting Carolyn.
Her accent makes her even prettier and I really love the gray hair
Thanks!
@@colleenglea you're very welcome
if I have a design on the outer seam of the pants I'd like to keep is it possible to just take in the inside seam?
It depends on the amount you want to take out Amanda, but for a more balanced pant leg it is better to remove access fabric from both sides.
Nice madam love from Pakistan
Thank you!
Will this work if you just want to take in the upper thigh area of jeans? The jeans I want to slim out are flare jeans & fit great except for the looseness in the upper thigh area
Yes it does!
I missed it,how much did you intend to take in,,total???? if you do 1and1/2 in. On one side, wouldn't that be taking pant in 3 in.???
Hello Joan. The measurements will vary depending on the size of the pants leg and your body shape. The best thing to do is to try on the pants and take in the required amount.
Do you just cut off the extra material ??.. Also how do you make tighter on the hips ??.. Ty
Yes you do cut away the extra material Sarah. It can be a little tricky for the hips you may have to take in the side seams and the back seam. I hope that helps!
thanks 😂
Thanks!
Thank you!! You reminded me of what I did wrong!
Happy to be of help Lector.
LOL, stream I need you of what you did wrong! Have you followed her instructions and are you wearing those pants now? I don't think so! She didn't give us any instructions, unless you read between the lines, and there just aren't enough lines for me. I am not a seamstress, but I know there's more then what she is demonstrating.
very clear except for how to trim the excess away and finish the new seam; otherwise there is a big bunch of fabric, bulk, isn't there? Or am I missing something ?
Just cut away the bulk and then neaten the raw edges Myra.
That’s perfect thank you for showing I’m wondering is there anyway or maybe you have one I should look a video I have a pair of capris I just bought and I quickly lost 20 pounds health issues and I wanna take them in from the waist down the crotch is baggy do I just go around the whole city line again and take them all in equally on either side? And I have a bigger booty so my parents always gap at my back can I do a dog in the backyard that make it pucker? Do you already have a video showing how to taking the whole pants that would be great, if not would you consider showing us? thank you & God bless!! Jen
Thank you for commenting Jen - To your first question the answer is YES! This video tutorial may help with your second question> ruclips.net/video/mr-t38kkJVU/видео.html. I don't have a video showing how to take in the whole pants, and unfortunately the videos on my channel are all about how to refashion clothing.
What kind of stiching did you use, was it straight stich? If it was not do you think straight stitch is ok to use?
Yes, the straight stitch will be okay!
My legs do need taking in and that look easy but mine are mainly big at top and round the bum and front as i have what you call a mothers apron, so how would i do that please or they will still be baggy???
Hello Susan! The same technique applies but maybe take in more on the inner leg seam.
@@colleenglea Thank you for getting back I will have ago.
Question. Could you mark where you want to take it into and just overlock it from there? None of this straight stitch, cutting and then overlocking because the over locker cuts it’s anyway?
Yes, that is possible!
Design
You are gorgeous!!!
Thank you Elyse.
I am sorry but why sew both sides of one leg? I am new to sewing and in desperate need to take in the leg of my pants but most vids I’ve seen only sew the inner leg. I love this video the best though, good job and thank you!!!
It is to keep the centred front balance of the leg pant, and removing access either side of that, for a more professional fit. Thank you for your question Deja.
IMHO, basically you have to take both sides in to avoid the fabric being off grain. In other words , you risk the seam line being twisted when they are on if you do 'not' take in both sides.
