Hey bill, more and more I'm seeing people customizing the key pins. I wonder how much difference it really makes as far as anti-picking??

    • @rallock67
      @rallock67 10 лет назад +1

custom key pins work well if you thread the pin chambers. Gerry Finch helped LAB test their serrated pins, both key and driver, and wrote an article of his findings in ALOA KeyNotes 8/83. He found threading all but the first chamber, both upper and lower, and using serrated pins in those chambers proved to be almost impossible to pick open. Only 3 turns of a 6-32 tap in the plug chambers are needed.
He also suggested LAB make stainless steel pins to prevent drilling

rallock67 Very cool information Rallock67, Thanks! As I told bill I have seen several people make serrated key pins. I was thinking that if we're only trying to push the top of the key pin up to the shear line; what would it's serrations snag on? If all it takes is a couple of threads of the plug and upper chambers like stated by G Finch, then why isn't everyone doing it I wonder. Or is it coming? And I also wonder if that information pertains only to SPP or to bumping, and raking as well? Are we all going to be extinct in the near future?? Impossible to pick??

      CopLock
most likely it is to costly to make serrated pins in both driver, key pins and to machine threading in the pin chambers. It is also to costly to make stainless steel pins. Before you say "But Rodger ABUS and ASSA have steel pins............" Those aren't made in US but made in China or Germany. .
As for pick, bump and raking resistance, if the manufacturing has very close tolerances, serrated pins and threaded chambers would make in next to impossible to open by those methods. You can bump open a standard American padlock with serrated pins as all the pins except the lowest cuts(0 or 1) have serrations.

Excellent response thank you. I should have guessed it always comes down to dollars and cents. Thanks for the great info and pleasant conversation sir. I think this info would be great for someone in the security business. They could upgrade locks for customers etc. but that's for another discussion. Cheers!

CopLock Serrated key pins make it harder to start by over-lifting, then release tension until the stack drops to sheer. A disadvantage of threading is the extra wear on the pins, bible, core and key during normal operation. One little snag of a serration on threading creates force which trickles down through the whole system. Thankfully this industry still associates reduction of lifespan or reliability with lower value. As for the modification I made to key pin 6 in this lock, I was hoping Bill would expect the standard challenge lock pinning where a high lift is required in the back. Sadly, it was a terrible factory key bitting so there wasn't much room to fit good tricks in this one.

Bosnianbill, I stumbled upon your channel about a month ago. I have always been intrigued by locks but until I found your channel I had no idea there were people out there who shared my interest and participated in lock sport. Thanks for producing such great videos.

Those purple-handled Petersons are 0.018", the older 0.015" 'Euro slenders" have blue handles and none of the new "Bogie" style rakes are available in that thickness. I have one in 0.025" and it is fantastic.

I'll tell ya what Bill you're a pretty good Narrator while you pick... I can't even breathe when I pick locks and you talk all of us thru what pin your on and what the pin is with out even ever looking at it.... I do got a tip for you.... It seems to be that you were going to say something along the lines of getting hung up with the follower and the cylinder.... My guess is the pins fall down on you, if that is the case use a shim betweeen the top pins and the follower

Heey man, it is nice how you show that not all locks are as good as they say.
but you should try to pick a "MAUER NW5 SKG" I would like to see you break open that one.

bosnianbill Heey man, I have tried to find one but they are just to expensive :(
If you would come across one you should get it! It would be a real challenge.

Looking at some of your earlier videos got me thinking: could you make a lock that is difficult or almost impossible to tension? Like a lock whose front face is a free rotating disc and the actual tensioning part is behind the pins somewhere? I know that many Gerda locks have tube keys that tension on the inside of the key body, but I guess that isn't impossible to pick either. Maybe you could show us some of the anti-tensioning tricks that lock manufacturers use in their locks?

Hey bill, I was wondering if you could make a video on picking small padlocks, like the ones with 3 pins, and what type of picks you would use because the lock is so small, it would really help me if you did! Thanks.

Hey Bill, beginning with saying that i'm a little new to serious lock picking and your videos really help me a lot with my understanding of how different locks work. I am looking for a standard picking set to become better in my skills. My question is about the DOM lock. Eventually i want to be able to pick my own chamber lock. It's a DOM lock but my key has tiny dents in the side. What's the technical term for this kind of lock and is it even pickable? Many thanks
    Sorry for the bad english
