- Thursday marks one year since a violent mob of thousands of far-right and white supremacist Trump supporters descended on the U.S. Capitol, disrupting Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election and resulting in five deaths and hundreds of injuries. We look at where these movements are one year later, with the updated investigative documentary “American Insurrection” by Frontline in collaboration with ProPublica and Berkeley Journalism’s Investigative Reporting Program. Director Rick Rowley explains how the far-right social movements have grown since the insurrection and says “the locus of the organizing has shifted really from a national platform to a local one, which makes it more difficult to track and increases the potential for local or regional violence.” Rowley and Frontline correspondent A.C. Thompson interviewed January 6 select committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson about what makes this a moment for “far-right mobilization” and discussed the significance of the widespread contradictory beliefs by many on the far right that antifa and Black Lives Matter dressed up as Trump supporters and carried out the January 6 riot, but that those who tried to overturn the election are patriots.

I don't understand how deadly force wasn't used by more officers to protect themselves. People have been shot and killed for a lot less at traffic stops.

Perhaps they weren't given specific permission to "fire at will" by superiors that were either totally unprepared or themselves captured by the Trump mystique? I don't know whether specific orders would be required in this situation or not.

This is by far the most impactful and realistic look at what happened on that fateful day and since. I fear for our democracy because it's hanging on by a thread at this point.

Our elected politicians at the national level almost exclusively represent the interests of the donor class rather than the electorate. Candidates for the highest offices are vetted ahead of time and "elected" by spending bucket loads of money on attack advertising, with the complete cooperation of the mass media. Our only hope for change lies in sustained mass demonstrations of non-violent civil disobedience. Right!! Involving a public that is consumed with tribal bickering and electronic diversions. Yeah. It has to do with the legitimacy feedback loop. In order to build trust the government has to govern over those who are governed by showing its legitimacy to govern by solving problems beyond the control of the individual. Only through positive action can governments build trust. However neoliberal dogma with its hyper individualist, hyper pro market and hyper materialist rhetoric aims to sabotage the functioning of government as a force of collective good because neoliberals believe that the market should reign supreme therefore government power should be decreased. However as a result corporate power went up big time. Large corporations by design are anti-democratic because their only aim is to A become more profitable and B survive. And then the large corporations pump even more money into buying their useful idiot politicians. The result is an unreliable and hostile government who only does the bidding of the corporate elite. I call this mechanism self-deligitimalisation.

Though a necessary recording of the weaknesses and illnesses of our species, e.g., racism, white supremacy, sexism, and homophobia, just to name a few, the actions of our weakest members of our species attacking Capital Hill is difficult to watch. So much hate in a body that is focused on harming. I can only hope that our children will see the unfathomable harm's that people, those who have thrown away their humanity and their compassion, can inflict upon each other. With that said and as an outside observer, I think that Joe Biden being the choice for the DNC's pick for the 2020 presidential elections may have been a huge mistake. He appears to be reflecting a Trump lite approach to policiy making. Hopefully, and for 2024, the DNC will be able to find a Democrat who is focused on serving the people. A presidential hopeful who can commit to lessening the harmful reach of domestic terrorists and of foreign governments and who can help in reducing climate change, world hunger, and crimes against humanity, just to name a few.
Biden is a mistake to the extent that he does not change the conditions that led to the Trump-led coup attempt. Which is to say, he has failed miserably so far. (And I didn't even mention climate change).

For example, I think the actions of certain central banks are being coordinated. This doesn't end well ... for anyone. I disagree. Excessive passion can easily turn to violence. Leaders are required to keep everyone's eyes on the prize, similar to the way a meeting chairman continually brings discussion back to the topic(s) at hand.

@@neilifill4819 I'm saying that respected leaders are required in a large movement to keep the members (passionate or not) from splintering into bickering special-interest tribes, and instead to continue to work within an organized framework of goals and "rules of engagement". Similarly, in a meeting there are goals (the agenda) and rules of order (formal or informal) that the group needs to be reminded about from time to time as individual members or subgroups wander off-topic into pet peeves or special interests not aligned with the agenda. In my mind, that is an apples-to-apples comparison.

NSA, all intel, Republicans knew this was coming, the date and the time. Yet, Capitol Police swat equipment was locked up, and Capitol Police had zero access? SWAT teams should've been at the rally and the Capitol. In the skies, a super-elite force, I never heard of (can't remember name; it's on recent Beau video), was waiting for orders; they had the okay to shoot to kill. Had they been ordered, all if not most of those insurrectionists would be dead right now. Latter don't realize how serious it was, and how close they were to being shot and killed. That force takes no prisoners. Serious shit. It never should've happened. Sorry to say, if special forces in the air would've taken action, we'd have few, if any, of these groups remaining. Civil war would be highly unlikely. Now, it's not. This plot is a lot deeper in our gov't than we know. The rich and powerful, and Republicans hate democracy, love a global order. We'll never know the non-government players involved, those who truly run the world, are. Still, I pray the rest who organized this, inside and outside of the gov't will be revealed.

I think that damages his credibility considerably. It feels more like I’m living in one of those shite action movies where the plot doesn’t fully line up but the director was over budget and decided “F-it, just double the attack footage and let’s go home”.
