  • Last Sunday I decided to cycle the Amalfi Coast.
Most people here will load their bikes in their cars and start from an ideal/free parking spot, like outside Castellammare di Stabia or Agerola.
I was alone and I didn't feel like doing that, besides, I feared getting stuck in traffic on the way back.
So I chose to start from Naples City, where I live, although I knew quite well that the road up to Pompeii and a little beyond, would be very bumpy.
My plan was to get back by train from Salerno, as the so-called Treni Regionali are cheap (€5.50) and have bike carriages (1 train every half hour, or every hour).
The weather was overcast, with rain due at 2pm. So another goal was to complete the route before the rain caught up with me.
Having a cloudy day was perfect, as the heat of the full sun would have been unbearable. I am not an early bird, I set off at 9.45am.
I stopped in Castellammare for coffee and croissant, having also brought a bike lock...
There is one major uphill between Piano di Sorrento and Positano.
Then it's all ups and downs.
Filming with a hand-held camera while going downhill made me slow down considerably.
The Costiera road can be dangerous because of bikers who invade the opposite lane when overtaking, so you need to pay attention all the time.
Soon I forgot I was peddling and just enjoyed going through one beautiful village after the other.
I stopped again in Amalfi, at my favourite bar, Pansa, for coffee and cakes. I drank the excellent water from the fountain in the square, coming down from pure mountain springs.
There is another long uphill before Vietri, the town of ceramics.
I cycled down to Salerno along the crazy overpass by the port. You won't realise how crazy this dubious engineering feat is until you're on it.
I was about to catch the train back, late by one hour, when a lovely girl offered me a lift home. So that was the happy ending to a slow cycling trip (Avg 21km/h).
