- My wife bought me a new welder so I didn't have to keep borrowing one. First project would be to make a welding cart for it. It's not my design, I found pictures I liked and figured out the dimensions based on known variables. It fits my welder well, but if you make your own, some dimensions may need to be adjusted. Now with this done, I can get back to work on the truck.Follow me on

58 yr old millwright here. Been in the shop or garage since my early teen. Started in wood shop in 8th grade with table saw, lathes and assorted other power tools. Even I still use a guard on a grinder. Seen too much of other peoples blood and had more than my share of kickbacks. Good job on the cart

Nice welder. I am a beginner. I clicked on the video because I saw the HOBART. I am using one at work, it's a different model, but looks identical to yours. The machine is solid and easy to use. I am considering buying this welder for my own personal use. Good video, thanks a bunch.👍
Hobart is a Miller with less bells and whistles. It gets the job done. This welder has been a workhorse for me, and I still love it. Best of luck, and thank you.

i just bought me the same welder tonight excited to learn never welded but determined to learn. i really love that coffee cup brother :)
Nit sure where the coffee cup came from. As far as the welder, just weld scrap and watch RUclips vids. I started with flux core and welded until I didn't need to grind the welds smooth. Adding gas after that makes you look like a pro.

Looks great, I had to laugh at the grinder mishap. Got my shirt once, went from a 2XL to a small in a mater of seconds, just got some rug burn on my belly.
Did a good job on the cart my first welding cart was an old deer stand I still have it to this day have the welder on it and a plasma cutter

I hope you listened to your wife!!! You were very fortunate. You should wear long sleeved clothing when welding, an impact resistance shield when grinding, keep protective guard on grinder at all times, remove flammable liquids from workshop. Good build though!!!

I haven't caught a cut off wheel to the leg...yet. Did however have my grinder slip out of my gloved hand, cut through my glove and took a small chunk out of my right index finger, cleaning a 45⁰ bevel for welding in college.
Wasn't on video but I've got a great scar on my left hand where it jumped and went through my leather glove cutting into the tendon that controls my thumb. I was wearing all the gear and had a guard on. The dang things are dangerous. I still use them though lol.

It’s only a matter of time when one of the grinding or cutoff wheels explodes. Guards should be in place. You don’t want to end up blind or worse.

Cool cart man. Loved the vid. Glad you didn't get hurt with the cut-off wheel. I almost lost my middle finger to a cut-off building a custom exhaust. Cut right through my welding glove and chewed me open down to the bone. Haha.
deepstopdiving I had one that got me through my glove and it hit the tendon. I could see it slide back and forth as I moved my thumb. There's a poc of it on my Instagram. Cut off disks are nasty! Thanks for the compliment and I'm glad to hear that you were unsuccessful in dismembering yourself.

My first welding cart was made out of an old deer stand came out really nice most I had in like 20 or $25 just for the wheels then I end up buying me a plasma Carter hypertherm 30 XP man I had to build up for my welding cart for the plasma cutter Bob Elkhart Indiana
Use the corner magnets to have both angles setup straight. And btw.. you almost lost your ballz. and "something else" next to them. Take your wife advice next time.. she's the one that will miss what you almost lost...if you lose it. :) Nice work at the end.. Cheers.

Nice design. Shop safety, you might consider moving the motorcycle out when grinding or welding, or get a welding blanket. I built a small welding and cutting table at least 20 years ago, it has served me well. I needed a bigger layout surface, so I installed a new personnel door in the garage. I used the 3/0 6/8 steel flat panel door as a top, it not super heavy, but it work for almost 15 years. I was always having flat tires on all my carts and stuff, so I had a bunch of those small tire filled with tore sealant and ballast. Thought your video was good, just wanted to share my thoughts.😀👍 J
I usually keep the bike out when I'm working in there. I built the cart after work most days and just didn't feel like it. I was always careful about where my sparks went. The bike was unharmed, wish I was so lucky lol. The shop is a work in progress. A lot of my time has been spent on the landscape in front of my house. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate feedback.

You almost had a dingus removal. I thought for sure I had cut my fingers off. Turns out that when the wheel exploded, they were just smacked by shrapnel. Terrifying experience.
That is a sweet cart. If you get a flat fill it with expanding foam :)

That is a nice project for your shop. A couple of suggestions if you will indulge me. Go to Goodwill and buy a couple of dress shirts to cover your arms while welding. Weld burn sucks. Then throw out that grinder and replace it with ones that have a paddle switch. That way when you drop it while working under that bump side truck, it won't cut you in half. I'm not a safety monitor...these are just things I find make my shop time more enjoyable.
Consider yourself indulged. That's a great idea. Especially the paddle switch.
I thought I would share, I took your advice and got a new 11a (up from 7a) grinder with the paddle switch. I love it, and it's more safe. Thank you for the tip.

11:18 is why I only use paddle switch grinders. I’ve had that happen to me and it wasn’t fun. Barely missed my man parts.
I have a paddle switch now and I haven't hurt myself since. Still have the scar though...
Can't say you didn't go rugged! Why not 2 tanks for quick aluminum changeover? And that wooden welding table? Agree with Jack, move the dang Hog out of harms way! Rustoleum rust restorer. Gem of a product. Brush it on steel (rusted or not) and you have in 5 minutes an epoxy like finish ready for paint that will last decades. Good job sir. Thanks for the ideas.. Peace

Might want a higher bracing for your tank. One hard pull and it will topple. Top heavy. Nice work though with the exception of almost severing your arteries. be sfae.
I thought that would be the case but the bracing is not a factor in this setup falling over. I use the welder at least once a week and use the bottle to move it throughout my work space. The whole cart will topple before the bottle falls by itself. My wife is still giving my a hard time about the grinder slip. Left a nice scar that she likes to point out lol.
Watching that was great though I realize now why they sell leather aprons. That’s something I would do.

Yeah, I'm far more careful now. Boots and jeans usually and always eye protection. I've caught shrapnel in the face more recently.
note to self.... your cart is securing the bottom of the bottle.... you should put a strap towards the top,, or at the very least 1/2 the way up.... be safe....
I thought about that and was planning on putting a push handle or something like that and using that to secure the bottle at a higher point. As is it, I have not done that and have found that the cradle, being curved, supports the bottle very well and does not allow it to move. I find I can use the bottle as a hold to move the cart around if needed. It looks deceiving, but the bottle is very secure in there.

I should have tilted my cart for my everlast mig welder like yours. Maybe time for a modification.

If I'm not mistaken the Hobart is made by (MILLER) that's what I herd anyway few years ago, ,..
Yes, it is a Miller without the bells and whistles. Miller parts are used and even the internals are marked as Miller. I am using Miller tips. I love the welder and it has paid for itself with projects I have done for others.

No its not. Its made by ITW Illinois Tool Works. But ITW makes both miller and hobart they are sister companies.

is it expensive to buy the metal to make your own cart?
This cost about $70 at the time. Metal has gone up in price and I don't have an answer anymore.

only a loony would remove the gard from a grinder and use it as a death wheel i have seen fatal injurys working offshore stay safe You're life is more important .
I need to but my own and quit borrowing this one. That's what needs to happen. I have not needed it much since, so before the next big project I'll buy one. The guard stays on.
Long as you’re care and not using the grinder in a way it shouldn’t and use proper PPE you’ll be good

I bet you had a good sunburn after that since you didn't cover your arm's. Use proper PPE when doing work like this. Don't just grab a cotton long sleeve shirt either. They make clothes that are for welding in.
I've had my share of burns from welding. I'm a little smarter now and have avoided some serious injuries wearing leather welding clothes. In this one I didn't burn, but welding the seams on my truck burned me so bad I couldn't play my guitar because my skin hurt. Like I said, I'm smarter now... mostly.
Is these welder good for auto frame work
Yes, it is plenty strong for anything automotive, from the frame, down to sheet metal work.

What size casters and wheels are those?
I believe the wheels are 4in rims and the casters are 2in. The casters arentbbig enough to roll smooth on anything but a perfect surface. A little annoying, and I wish I'd just bolted them on not welded them.
