  • In today's video, we take a look at 'BARE STEMS ON TRADESCANTIA ZEBRINA' which happens to older trailing plants - i.e. the older leaves further up the stems crisp up and die, leaving long bare stems. I show you a younger Wandering Jew which still has all its leaves, then an older one that has begun to get leaf die-back. I then explain why I think it happens, and I show you a 'work-around' tip, which gives you a constantly renewing and rejeuvenating Tradescantia. I've done this technique successfully with Tradescantia Red Jewel and Tradescantia Zebrina.

    Wonderful information! I thought my plant was dying, I ended up taking cuttings to start over again, now I know to trim it :)

    Yes, thank you! I really pruned mine back because it looked so "leggy". I thought I had killed it. Now I know what to do next time. Add to that the pinching off and hopefully it will be bushier in the future.

      Glad to hear you've 'sussed it out'! It's just a continual process of propagate and renew. The only 'plant' I've ever had of Tradescantia where it hasn't yet developed leggy stems with dead leaves is the one I did in a long bag where I rooted it along the length of each stem.

    Thank you for this! you answered most of the questions ive had in this short video compared to others ive watched before. But was curious, what kind of soil do you use for them and what method of watering?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 года назад +1

      Glad it was helpful! Tradescantia are happy in a general purpose media - I've even started using coir recently with no problems. I leave them to dry out - and most hybrids are happy to dry out - top watering - although I've heard bottom watering is fine too. There are some hybrids that prefer to be slightly moist. I've a video coming out this week which shows you an example of one that prefers moist media and shade.

    Thanks for this video. I really like this plant. My tradescantia doesn’t trail far down (just about 30 cm) before starting to bend upwards. I was wondering if your long trailing plants were trailed horizontally before hanging them down?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 года назад +1

      Yeah they'll always start to bend upwards eventually - against gravity. Nothing will prevent that. However, I very often grow them horizontally first as that's the way they prefer to grow - then hang them when I get the required length.

    Hey, news to your channel and learnt so much already. Could you provide any links on where you order your tradescantia samples from? I have two Sabrina’s but want to get more variety. Many thanks!

      Glad to be of service Mel! To be honest, I bought all my Tradescantia from different sources - but all off eBay. They're so easy to root that providing they're not being posted in freezing temperatures they're likely to survive the journey. Just look for a good seller with a percentage of 'positive feedback' over 99% and you should do OK.

    Can I do the same with the sillamontana? Also, can I propagate the bare stems with no leaves in a propagation box? I am trying to save one I found in the office.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 года назад +2

      Trad. sillamontana is different from the zebrina varieties in that you can almost treat it like a cactus. Higher humidity and too frequent watering will kill it and that's the reason I've struggled to get mine to thrive. They grow in arid places - and arid definitely does NOT describe my greenhouse! However, if you can keep it on the dry side it'll be fine. It'll grow upright initially then flop over and start to root along the ground in the same way as other varieties. So yes you should be able to root it easily enough. I would say you'll need at least a few leaves on a cutting for it to properly root. good luck!

    can you just wrap the bare part in the soil and new growth will start? or do you have to cut it?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

      If there is a viable leaf node then yeah you can layer it - or wrap it in sphagnum.
