We named the blobfish based on how it looks after we take it out of its natural environment. It looks rather normal deep down in the ocean. It would be the same as if aliens named humans based on how we looked exploded in space.
I think you can up the cuteness factor by having them in different actions. Jazza playing with paints and making a mess, Pennywise chasing after his balloon, T-rex growing a garden.
You should take those exact same traits you used for the “cute” character, and make a visually cute character, and then make an “evil” character based off of the cute character while using the same traits. I think that way it could give it some “context” and some contrast because they’re such different characters but also the same
Um, actually... 😉 Blobfish are pretty cute when they're underwater. They rely on water pressure to maintain their shape, so if you pull them out they turn into the gelatinous deflated nightmare fuel most of us are familiar with.
so what we learned; cute characters need a foundation of what the "not cute" version of it is, to truly stand out in that contrast and really be seen as "cute" simplicity is key baby characters have a bit more leeway in that they can have a variety of proportions, but adult "cute" characters usually have something to the effect of having smaller eyes and ever so slightly more defined features.
I don't know much about art, but I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You crack me up! I just found your channel tonight and have been watching a few of the videos. The first one I came upon was the one where you got thrift store paintings and added monsters to them. I LOVED THAT! You totally brought old stale art to life again! If I had had an art teacher like you years ago, I would be better at art today! And to answer your question, which one is the cutest. I love the blobfish the most. Even though there's no story behind it, I could envision creating a story for him myself.
Finally another character design, it’s been forever since the last one. His channel has gone in a fun direction but I definitely miss the characters he would design from his twitch live streams and having his audience involved!
There are three elements i believed you missed: 1) When things like hair, clothes and other such accessories are larger in proportion with the character it give a cuteness factor, it's not just the eyes, it's anything that give the illusion that they are small in comparison to the rest of the world. 2) There needs to be a bit of contrast with innocence, like a cute little viking baby girl with big hair, trying to lift a big axe. 3) The characters need to tell a story of some sort, it can be subtle and overflow into the characters personality. like a tiny hint that they have the great potential of becoming a worrier, or charismatic person, or adventurous. I believe if you consider theses things, there character will come out less generic.
now when i didn't tear up watching jazza paint tears he told me i was heartless, but now i come back and say nothing makes me want to smile more than baby quasimodo uwu
fun fact that no one wants to know: The blobfish usually doesn't look like that. It's because of tissue damage caused by rapid decompression (from fishing).
And obviously out of water it's going to look like a defalted ball. In water he looks more normal since he can get away a bit from gravity, ...still ugly, but a "normal ugly" being a deep sea fish. I think the more atmospheric pressure on the body/deeper in the sea, the uglier the fish. Their body's adapted to it and look ugly, especially when not under that pressure they're used to
When you draw that sad elephant sketch, I thought it was adorable. So maybe some type of pity is a factor in the concept of "cuteness". Also babylike features. It is natural sense for us to take care of babies, small and weaker ones.
Probably for the same reason Jazza mentioned about knowing the character. Its a cute character design but you know its 1 second away from hinging its jaw open like a bear trap and eating your face.
When he said "blub fish", the first that came to my mind, is the cute little fish which is basically the signature of Rin from Drawingwiffwaffles.... Anyone else? 🙂🙂
h_artandstuff hm, I actually prefer movie Toothless in cuteness, for me Toothless from the book is... I don't really like him I mean he's a great character but a bit too annoying for my personal taste
Hey Jazza, may I suggest a new art challenge for you? Do you remember "The Color of Loss" picture that you made a long time ago (and had us compete to color it)? Art is a fantastic way to convey emotions, and I thought that picture did a fantastic job conveying an emotion of sadness. I think it would be super cool if you did a mini-series on this channel where you make individual pieces to convey an emotion as strongly as you possibly can. You have no limitations and can use whatever media you want to make the artwork, and the only objective is to convey a single, strong emotion. You could do one video for each emotion (sadness, disgust, joy, terror, etc.), and I think us subscribers would love to see it!!
I'd just like to point out that the so-called "Blobfish" is actually a pretty normal looking fish when it's at the depth it usually lives at. Judging based on the pictures you see here and most everywhere else is comparative to judging a human based on what we would look like exploded in space. It's the same issue - a massive lack of pressure compared to what we're built for.
I wasn’t personally offended in he slightest! I apologize if it came off that way. I was merely pointing out that Jazza lives in Australia, which is not Europe despite “color” being spelled “colour” in both countries. There are many differences in Australian and British grammar, so it is incorrect to lump the two together. Just trying to spread information :)
Actually, Blobfish only looks like that out of water. They're deep-sea fish so the pressure down there keeps the body together and when the pressure's gone it can't handle its own body

In my experience, cuteness relies heavily on expressiveness. The unique emotion that comes from a creative design makes the adorable aspects pop. I also find using children to be helpful as the origin of cuteness. Going back to the expressiveness, looking at wal-e, the mobile eyes and body language can often give the effect of a child’s wonder and emotion. Another example, like pikachu, has the advantage of the distinct child-like high pitched voice that can only make you think of cute by association, even as he zaps his opponents with enough lightning to stop their heart. However, that’s not all pikachu has going for him. Even without animation, his curious eyes and round body really convey the attraction that we’d feel for a baby. These are not proven but as far as I’ve seen, the relationship tends to be helpful to think about when designing a cute character.
Quasimodo is the cutest, this design could be the cover of a children's book. He has the most personality and expression. The t rex and baby Jazza were sweet but pretty neutral in expression, it would be different if baby Jazza was proudly showing off a crayon drawing on the wall or focused on a new art project
its not BABY jazza. he explained himself that he wanted to keep the adult look and not make him baby-ish. that's why he made the eyes small. you should focus more on what he's saying @Paulismyhero777 . *rubs it in the face*
@@mochi-mochi that's fine, adult cartoon Jazza could still do something or show some expression and personality. Compared to the other drawings it was less dynamic
In secondary school i did a math project on cuteness Basically we as humans are wired to find babies cute as they’re vulnerable and we want to protect things that are cute Babies when they are born have 70-90% of their adult eye size, ie the ratio of eye:face is higher The same with heads, babies tend to have a higher head:body ratio than adults Babies tend to be rounder, so more circular heads/round bodies, fat hands etc Rosy cheeks small mouths etc, are also traits usually on babies So when animators/illustrators want to make you love the character or feel protective of them, they give them big eyes, a big head, little mouths, round bodies, and other traits of babies (Wall-E, Puss in Boots when he does cute eyes, Stitch, etc.) Also when animators/illustrators want the character to look scarier/more evil/etc, they use smaller eyes, smaller heads, bigger mouths, are generally more angular (less round) etc. So you feel little sympathy for them, less protective of them This also helps with juxtaposition of “cute evil” characters, what makes them funny/intriguing is the fact they have the “baby” traits, yet you don’t want to protect them Obviously there are exceptions, but the general idea is that to make something cute, make them look younger/give them baby traits, as humans are wired to see something that looks like a baby and think “protect” “love” or “awwwwwwwww”, which is what you can see in this video Make character cute? Make them the baby version Don’t know if this makes sense, I did the project years ago, but I did win first place whoop
This has a lot to do with why humans love pets. Especially dogs and cats because even as adults they retain a lot of their "baby like" qualities. ((Side note. It has been scientifically studied that cats' meows - something they learned over time to do almost exclusively with humans as feral/wild cats rarely meow to one another- has the same frequency as a human infant's cry))
The blobfish only looks the way it does because its skin gets ruptured when brought up and it is a lot less compact because the water compacts it naturally
Yup! It’s the massive pressure difference between plain old air and insane amounts of miles of water pressing down on it. Its body is built for that pressure. It’s like how we’d get crushed instantly that far down
Exactly, their bodies were made for the pressure by the sea floor and so their bodies have evolved to be made for an environment with that much pressure, although when brought up the pressure is suddenly reduced causing its body to de-compact and take its infamous blob form
I think this might be your best video so far: the thinking process, the research, the analysis, the development of characters; it's a nice piece of academic+fun realization. Good job 👍🏼
“Don’t want him to look like an infant” Physically the more baby-like it is the more cute it seems. Something about trigger something in your head. That’s why if you look towards our media like Disney, you can see it in their characters echoing very baby-like proportions
For what? I’m just pointing how anything cute will skew towards look like an infant. There’s nothing wrong with it. There’s nothing wrong with what Jazza said about not wanting to look like a infant version of his avatar. Just kind of hard to avoid if he completely stuck to his list.
Ok so I couldn’t help but imagine his character but like a lot more baby like with big eyes and doing the same intro thing but like waddling and carrying a blanket like that seems like it would be like absolutely adorable
They only look blobby because they've experienced explosive decompression from being brought to the surface from deep under the sea, where they live. When they're alive they look more or less like normal fish.
Fun fact: the blod fish doesn't actually look like this! It looks like this out of water because it is a deep sea creature that has severe tissue damage from fishermen pulling them up too quickly! They actually normally look like fish!!
4:57 the kid in the top right corner looks like the love child of Legolas and Gimli. I could get emotionally attached to a cute lil' half-elf/half-dwarf warrior in training with pointy ears, curly locks, and a ginger beard.
Old Pennywise was scary. New Pennywise is ADORABLE. The whole movie I just wanted to boop his lil nose and take him to the optometrist for his poor lil eye😂
I *love* the blob fish I think they're adorable and my friends and family think im *weird* for it Edit: thanks jazza for making the blob fish something they could look at

Oooooooowwwww. The clone is the cutest!!!!!!
In secondary school i did a math project on cuteness
Basically we as humans are wired to find babies cute as they’re vulnerable and we want to protect things that are cute
Babies when they are born have 70-90% of their adult eye size, ie the ratio of eye:face is higher
The same with heads, babies tend to have a higher head:body ratio than adults
Babies tend to be rounder, so more circular heads/round bodies, fat hands etc
Rosy cheeks small mouths etc, are also traits usually on babies
So when animators/illustrators want to make you love the character or feel protective of them, they give them big eyes, a big head, little mouths, round bodies, and other traits of babies
(Wall-E, Puss in Boots when he does cute eyes, Stitch, etc.)
Also when animators/illustrators want the character to look scarier/more evil/etc, they use smaller eyes, smaller heads, bigger mouths, are generally more angular (less round) etc. So you feel little sympathy for them, less protective of them
This also helps with juxtaposition of “cute evil” characters, what makes them funny/intriguing is the fact they have the “baby” traits, yet you don’t want to protect them
Obviously there are exceptions, but the general idea is that to make something cute, make them look younger/give them baby traits, as humans are wired to see something that looks like a baby and think “protect” “love” or “awwwwwwwww”, which is what you can see in this video
Make character cute? Make them the baby version
Don’t know if this makes sense, I did the project years ago, but I did win first place whoop
Man this needs more credit 😪
I was too lazy to read that but good job writing it 😊
Makes sense
This has a lot to do with why humans love pets. Especially dogs and cats because even as adults they retain a lot of their "baby like" qualities.
((Side note. It has been scientifically studied that cats' meows - something they learned over time to do almost exclusively with humans as feral/wild cats rarely meow to one another- has the same frequency as a human infant's cry))
Actually, I don't rlly like babies
The blobfish only looks the way it does because its skin gets ruptured when brought up and it is a lot less compact because the water compacts it naturally
Yup! It’s the massive pressure difference between plain old air and insane amounts of miles of water pressing down on it. Its body is built for that pressure. It’s like how we’d get crushed instantly that far down
Exactly, their bodies were made for the pressure by the sea floor and so their bodies have evolved to be made for an environment with that much pressure, although when brought up the pressure is suddenly reduced causing its body to de-compact and take its infamous blob form
No wayy thanks for the info. Clearly learned something new today😂
They're still pretty hideous underwater, but at least they're not quite as bad.
I'm 2 dumb fo dis.-.
I really feel like baby Groot should have been a part of the mood board lol him dancing is just so freaking cute 😍
Option 2 is my favorite, I don’t know why but the t rex is just so cute!
I think this might be your best video so far: the thinking process, the research, the analysis, the development of characters; it's a nice piece of academic+fun realization. Good job 👍🏼
“Don’t want him to look like an infant”
Physically the more baby-like it is the more cute it seems. Something about trigger something in your head. That’s why if you look towards our media like Disney, you can see it in their characters echoing very baby-like proportions
Nocturne Works sorry but there was really no need for that
@@barrieabbott8338 no need for what lol
For what? I’m just pointing how anything cute will skew towards look like an infant. There’s nothing wrong with it. There’s nothing wrong with what Jazza said about not wanting to look like a infant version of his avatar. Just kind of hard to avoid if he completely stuck to his list.
babies are supposed to be cute so there parents dont chuck them off cliffs or smthn...
demon cat very dark lol
Ok so I couldn’t help but imagine his character but like a lot more baby like with big eyes and doing the same intro thing but like waddling and carrying a blanket like that seems like it would be like absolutely adorable
Miley Clark yeees
Baby yoda is so CUTE
The sad expression is what makes characters the cutest. Big eyes, looking up, pouty lips. Small, chubby body. Perfect cute Character
I think your mistaking sad for a frown
Jazza: “It’s been a few years since I’ve done a character design and plugged my book.”
Me: ....well dang. Has it really been that long?
I can’t believe Kirby didn’t make the cute list :(
Ikr 😩
I love kuuurby!!
*suprise pikachu face*
*The normal blobfish is adorable and no one can change my mind*
The blob fish is so stinken adorable!! Don’t call it ugly
a real blobfish is ugly, baby blobfish in this video isn't though
Baby yoda more like baby quasimoto
They only look blobby because they've experienced explosive decompression from being brought to the surface from deep under the sea, where they live. When they're alive they look more or less like normal fish.
I'm disappointed that toothless wasn't a part of this list
Tsukiko Suzuki who ???
Oda Siam Toothless, From the movie (Dont Remeber the exact name) “How to train your dragon”
True
Toothless is ABOORRRAAABLEEEEE
We always compare my dog to toothless
Jazza: makes baby Quasimodo
Disney: shut up and take my money
More like shut up and give us your money
More like "knock knock here's a DMCA!"
Anxin wasn’t lying jazza is a cutie. Really love how awesome his personality is
Omg Baby Quasimodo is so flippin' adorable *insert Jazza's weird baby noises here*
As soon as he said a cute dinosaur I immediately thought of the meet the Robinsons dinosaur.😂😂🤣😂😹
I have a big head, and little arms! I’m just not sure how well this plan was thought through.
Yes!! I thought of him too!! 🤣🤣
I thought of the Cheesasaurus Rex off of the old Kraft macaroni and cheese boxes
Rex from Toy Story
He's adorable, but most of his cute is from his mannerisms, rather than his visual design. He's a big ol' dumdum, and that's what makes him cute!
5:29 baby quasimodo was by far the cutest out of the five final drawings but that hamster on the right is adorable!
watch out for Hammond, from Overwatch.
Y u makin him cute, da jazzy avatar is already soo CUtE!
I am personally offended that baby Groot did not make the cute list
Me to
😂
@hoseokgram Thanks!
Same
Exactly
Fifel is originally from “An American Tail”.
Yeah XD I was kinda confused when he said he's from Fifel goes west
Fun fact: the blod fish doesn't actually look like this!
It looks like this out of water because it is a deep sea creature that has severe tissue damage from fishermen pulling them up too quickly! They actually normally look like fish!!
That’s actually really neat. I looked up picture of blob fish underwater and didn’t think it was that ugly.
Whaaaaaaaaa
Yea I Google it
Woah
woah what
Edit: googled it
4:57 the kid in the top right corner looks like the love child of Legolas and Gimli. I could get emotionally attached to a cute lil' half-elf/half-dwarf warrior in training with pointy ears, curly locks, and a ginger beard.
"People are just too ready to be creeped out by Pennywise."
Some people on Tumblr would like to disagree.
Why did you have to mention those creeps?!?! We don't want them here! Dx
EhhhhhhHHHHH DD:>
Old Pennywise was scary. New Pennywise is ADORABLE.
The whole movie I just wanted to boop his lil nose and take him to the optometrist for his poor lil eye😂
Why what do the people on tumblr do
@@angyd draw smut of pennywise

*Fun Fact:* Aparantly ‘Baby Yoda’ took 2 million dollars to make ...
Wow and baby jazza took around 10 mins at most and for each art supply in total (amt of ink) probably around
.50 cents or whatever currency
5 million
According to Jon favrou, it cost 5.7 million
@@partialrium5879 That's because Baby Yoda is a 3D model and fully animateable. Even the hair technology it uses is expensive enough
@@SemperFine i know, i know how expensive robotics and technology can be, i was just making a comparison. Cool fun fact tho :p
Blobfish is so adorable 💖
I *love* the blob fish I think they're adorable and my friends and family think im *weird* for it
Edit: thanks jazza for making the blob fish something they could look at
I always thought blobfish were one of the cutest creatures on earth. Can't see why people find them disgusting #aheartforblobfish
"Cute" Pennywise like like a Psychonauts character.
*The 'cute' Pennywise just looks indestructible, and It scares me.*
dreamility I mean, you aren’t wrong
Yeah um its its scarier than the real one
@@Becxius I feel more afraid of baby pennywise running after me stumbling over himself than I do adult pennywise trying to be a terrifying prick...... this unsettles me greatly
Buh dun tschhh
I love what you did there
dreamility it’s so cute though
The blobfish is adorable!
