Used to race my rc car on that track. Great memories.

How did we get to this island and talk about this like a normal person comes here to race their cars.

The military never built the race track. It was funded by the local RC club that was on the island. Keep in mind that military personnel only served 1 year tours out there unless they requested to stay longer. But many of the 1200 civilians out there spent their entire career on that island. There were all sorts of hobbies that were supported on that island. Golf, tennis, softball, bowling, scuba, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, weightlifting, basketball, astronomy, cooking… I was there from 92-93 and then again from 94-96. Although I was in the Army, I held a second job at the Marina and Pool employed by Kalama services. It was hands down the most amazing time of my life and I still miss the island.

It's funny, I know two Soldiers who toured the island. They both loved it. In fact, one of them fought hard to have multiple tours there. Surprisingly, it was very competitive getting assigned there. For my branch, the JAG Corps, it was the second hardest assignment to get after Antarctica.

@@azimuth361 yeah, I can imagine there might have been only a 2 or 3 positions assignment for JAG on island. But as an MP it wasn’t hard at all to get an assignment or an extension. I ended my first tour March ‘93, went to Bragg. August of ‘94 I submitted my 4187 to go back. Request was approved and October ‘94 I was back in the Rock. They had a retention incentive to stay on the island, and were offering $1000 to extend for one year. I would have done it for free, so that was a no brainer.

@@kevinparks3041 '93? You may have known one of them. SFC Charles King was there about that time. If you were on the island with him, you'd know him. He had an abundance of personality.

@@azimuth361 I knew SFC Johnny King. He was my platoon sergeant. He retired 1SG.

Back in 1967 there was a slot car track on the 2nd floor of one of the two large wooden WW2 (or possibly Korean War) two story barracks. First and last time I ever did slot cars. Surprising how many ways you try to find to occupy your free time. I also took my first college courses there taught by military officers paid by Allen Hancock College to teach courses during THEIR spare time.

@@justinhoward6755Well, I am not sure, but I think the answer is no because I did research and found nothing for volunteering.

Thank you for pointing out the booby! The color of the face really stands out against the fluffy whiteness.

as I am watching the videos I cant help thinking of the solitude and wondering if visitors (GF/BF parents) were allowed from time to time. You are probably off the island by now (22) and according to your voice tone I don't think you would go back. Also wondering what qualifications are needed to go there. Never the less this is an experience of a life time
