Iron Maiden got me into metal rather than prog. I discovered their prog interests much later. I did see an interview in the Seventh Son era when Dave Murray said he liked Marillion. The gateway band to prog for me was Pink Floyd. From there I listened to Gabriel-era Genesis, King Crimson, and Hawkwind (ok space rock rather than prog, but essentially part of the same 70s British prog scene). That encouraged me to delve further. Prog obscurities I would recommend in terms of bands are Arzachel and Khan (Steve Hillage projects, one album each); Comus; Beggar’s Opera and Spring. I recently discovered these.
Jade Warrior, Man, Triumvirat, Lake, Stray, Boxer, Family, Alexis, Esquire and Stiltskin ALL come to mind.
My "gateway band" was ELP. In fourth grade music class we listened to an excerpt from Aaron Copeland's "Rodeo", namely "Hoedown". I belonged to a record club and saw that ELP's latest LP, Trilogy, featured a cover of this tune. I was familiar with their hit "Lucky Man. I asked for the album for my birthday.
Very cool show! I know and love all these albums except for the last one, I’ll have to check that out! Really glad Gnidrolog got a mention, I think they are hugely under-appreciated.
Glad you like it..Henrik had some great picks!
Stray is my strongest pick from everything mentioned so far.
Eloy - "Ocean" is a good one. Very cool Prog/Space-rock
neil's Heavy Concept Album "yeah"
Cathedral (not the UK doom metal band), T2, Babylon, Asia Minor, Osanna, Semiramis, Il Balletto di Bronzo, PFM, Happy the Man, Progresiv TM, Gnidrolog. I'd throw Eloy and Camel in here too but I feel like they're pretty well known to prog fans
Henrik have you heard Robert Johnson and the Punchdrunks and their
