Bikepacking The Two Moors Way...my way! | A Six Day Bikepacking Adventure Over Dartmoor & Exmoor

  • Learning from my bike touring and overnight bikepacking trips I decided it was time for a multi day bikepacking adventure.
    Im no expert at this and very much an average cyclist so planning and preperation was paramount. Some sections I had already crossed on previous bikepacking overnighters and the road touring helped me improve my stamina.
    The kit had to be minimal and functional yet affordable. None of my kit is top end stuff.
    The trip starts in Exmouth then I pick up the Two Moors Way in Ivybridge and cross Dartmoor south to north mostly offroad.
    After a long day of road riding to Rose Ash I set out to finish the Two Moors Way by road riding and then hiking from West Lyn to Lymouth and Lynton.
    The second part of my trip crosses Exmoor west to east going offroad to Porlock where I take a break from the high midday temperature.
    Setting off late from Porlock I headed east to Wimbleball Lake by trail and road. Then, after a long day of riding and a good nights sleep at Wimbleball I decided to change my route and take a ride alongside the Grand Western Canal and then rejoin my planned route from Kentisbeare back to Exmouth.
    Hope you enjoy this one...a big one to edit! hope you like the music too....Happy Trails and thanks for your support.
    If you have any questions I will get back to you as soon as possible. The reason I upload these trips to RUclips is to put something back into the platform from which I have learnt and I am still learning from.
    Like bikepacking movies? check out this guy...mind blown!

      Thanks Dave, had a fun time with the trip although a bit too warm some days. Gave it a shot but it was a hiking route so put my twist on it. Landscapes over the moorands was sublime the rural middle section not so much, thanks again.

    Nice video. Just a tip...most vloggers these days talk as well. Tell your audience where you are going, stopped, how you feel. It makes the video very interesting.

      Your right about that, quality not quantity. Guess I was overwhelmed by the amount of video I had and rushed to get it done. I make vids when im out on trips, I hoped to give some inspiration through youtube as thats where I got my inspiration. Now there are many great new bike packing channels. Good to see bikepacking grow, everywhere. Happy trails.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this Chris. I've done Taunton Exmouth and Coast to Coast but want to try your idea of a circular route back across Exmoor to Taunton. Well done on that section from Huntingdon Cross up on to Puper's Hill. That's even tricky to walk.

      Hi Adrian, I use a dropper seatpost so a rack had to be used. Not the lightest out there but I use what I have! Well worth it though on technical downhill section. ATB Chris.

    I'm no expert either... the difference between you and I is that I don't want to ride with so few amenities. It's less about the "ride" and miles (and the retelling of the ride) and more about the experience for me. I too went with a full suspension frame but had planned all along on bringing a couple hundred pounds of gear and toys with me. So I chose one that would be able to carry 20 pounds each in all 4 panniers and not have to worry about the frame or a bolt-on rack failing. Add to that a single wheel suspension trailer and I knew I would want (need) some assist so I went with a 1000W mid-drive. Moving from basecamp to basecamp takes some time and concentration, the physics is different moving so much more mass but is so great being able to set up camp, take a real shower, strip the bike down and do long day rides out of as long as food (and toilet paper) hold out. Not sure how many miles you are riding on your tours but an MTB frame may not be optimal. Ride safe dude. - photos.app.goo.gl/Dzni1UdjvW4vaUFx9

    What are those horned handle bars you're using? (sorry don't know the right word)

    • @73megalith
      @73megalith  3 года назад

      Thanks Ben, the handlebars are from planet x.com and called Mickeys ( previously sold by Alpkit under another name ) the grips are an ergon copy made by lifeline at a much lower price. I have also attached a gadget extender bar to my handlebars under the bar loop, this keeps my kits away from cables and improves stability, hope this helps , happy trails.

      Could I just ask another question if you have time please. I'm looking to do a lot of bike packing, like yourself, over varied terrain. Do you use normal mountain bike tyres or something else?

      @@mrgravyman I used maxxis ardent 29 x 2.25 front and rear, recently put a maxxis high roller 29 x 2.35 on the front and maxxis ardent 29 x 2.4 on the rear. The idea being lots of control and grip up front and lower rolling resistance on the rear. Important if your on the road a fair bit. I have no preferences over tubeless/ tubed for bikepacking lots of pro's and con's! Hope this helps, thanks Ben. Happy Trails.

    Man it's so inspiring! Just seeing the view from behind the bars made me order bottle holders. Love the coke/peanut butter strap too! How did you find the backpack to use?

    • @73megalith
      @73megalith  4 года назад

      Hi Jethro , the peanut butter is just great for calorie input, lucky I love the stuff! I tried that choc flavour fuel peanut butter also, never again! I like having a back pack. Some folk don't, the pack has the air space system and vents well. I try to keep valuables and light stuff in there. I had to put extra water in my back pack on the hottest days. ATB, Chris.

      @@73megalith that's cool. I'm surprised a backpack worked well especially for water but it might be a good addition to our set ups. Myself and my partner are hoping to do some bikepacking. We just got her an mtb and got some bags for me to give it a go.

    What are those bottles holders called attached to you're handle bar ?

    • @73megalith
      @73megalith  4 года назад +1

      "Outdoor Tactical Molle Water Bottle Holder Pouch Military Sport Bag 550ml Black" EBay. These hold my 750ml smart water bottles or cycle drinks bottles no problem. I replaced the drawstring with shock cord. I cable tied the two bags together loosely using the plastic D rings. I purchased some Velcro webbing then simply found the best way to attach to my bikes. A cheap hack that works and I'm happy with them.
