Oh man....this is just bad ass! I saw that show twice!! Todd always did know how to put together amazing stage productions! First time I saw him was the full 7 piece UTOPIA band back in '75. Thanks for the memories!!
That Tulsa show was my first concert ever. Hard to top that one. Tickets for $6.50 and they played for 3+ hours. Last show as the Municipal Theater, later to become the Old Lady of Brady and now the Brady Theater.
Great stuff! So you bought the pyramid? Totally looks authentic! Best theatrical show I ever saw back in '77 and made me a Todd Fan for life! I agree, htf did he climb those stairs in a semi-dark stage with a guitar!? Ohh, to be young again, and to think we use to think Todd was wasted half the time. Can't be pulling stunts like that off wasted, now can one? What a great prize, looks so lonely out there in that field. I agree, you should get the sphinx head too! Can it really be 35 years??
Saw this live two nights in a row. First night it was raining and Todd fell on his ass when he was coming down on the rope to break the glass guitar and free singring. LOL LOVE IT
Saw Utopia during the Ra tour. I was 17, I'm 56 now and still have not seen anything like it! Place was half empty, but they played like it was Wembly stadium. What a show!!!
Man... I was born in June of 1978 (30 years much too late!!! lol). That must have been legendary to have been at that show. I can only imagine the energy they must have played with and exhibited that night. Luckily, for my generation we have Tame Impala to go see. You could say they're the Utopia of this generation. If you haven't already, you MUST check them out. They get lots of influence from Todd Rundgren and it shows in their music.
About 20 feet tall. No, it's metal and is painted, but showing some rust signs. 'Maurice', the Sphinx was cut into pieces to move it, and I think it was consumed in teh big warehouse fire that claimed a lot of the old Utopia stuff.
interesting find! if i knew where it was, i'd make a mecca there just to touch it...saw that tour they did with it, still remember how easily he climbed those narrow steps while playing - Todd's got actual rockclimbing skills, there's a rare vid for Fair Warning (on youtube) of him free-climbing a hairy rock/dirt cliff...he had a perfect climber's build back then, long fingers 'n skinny weighing all of about 100 lbs : 0
Of course. We have a gig, so lets build a suicidal pyramid to play the blistering lead breaks then throw yourself off it, staring you in the face really. Saw Utopia with Zeppelin at Knebworth, I was on the hill a little way back (somewhere in leeds I recon) and his lead guitar brought down several low flying aircraft. It was difficult to hear Zeppelin with the blood congealed in my eardrums. I feel sorry for kids today they have few musical role models. (Listen to 'State') and learn.
Whats that thing made out of and how tall is it?... Polypropylene piping? I'm not seeing any rust so, no metal...smart move. ..and maybe 20 feet tall? It doesnt look the worse for wear after 35 years! Damn, wish I could say the same about me. Nice acquisition, now get the sphinx and have the complete set!
I concur-one of the greatest shows ever! Saw this in Tulsa, OK, 3/77.
I saw this tour on New Years eve 77/78 at the Richfield Coliseum. Still to this day it is one of the best shows I have ever seen.
Saw this in March 77 at the Masonic Temple & again in Lansing! Simply couldn't get enough of this show!
I was there too Masonic temple 77

Awesome. Hard to believe they could play that complex music live and still have it sound like the album. Thanks for the upload.

...come to think of it, he does sing in Singring/Glass Guitar that line "I will climb the face of the highest mountain" ha
Those were special times!

No, not me, I just went searching for it and found it (with some hints on where it was).
Where is it? I live in Massachusetts and would love to see it someday.
