TheNajain Me too! I wouldn't know about her if not for youtube, which is great for such discoveries when used to filter out the endless rubbish ! As an authentic punk, I found our Nina by accident when searching Nico, a coming as a surprise not to have heard about her,(esp since she's been about since at least 1978) but then realised how insular even the British or English New Wave/Punk scene can be when it comes to all things "foreign". She must be at least a couple of years older than me,(we do seem to mature like a fine wine or when distilling a single malt whisky, maybe a better comparison might be the fine line between how stinky blue cheeses improve and age as they rot and decay !) Appreciate your message. Funnily the video for Smack Jack has Nina dressed as Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper, who both had huge mainstream success by the time Nina parodied them, whilst claiming to be "alternative", which is the point she's making in that film. Just when I thought I was starting to get a full picture, damn it if she isn't singing melodically Hindu songs devoted to the female aspect of Vishnu, Shiva ! (Who I have a large brass statue of, after my travels and a time I went to the Sri Mahamariamman gupola/temple each day, even placing my hands nine times in the Brahmin's sacred fire, without harm obviously, just before he led us round each shrine, finishing as usual at a giant lifesize statue of Sri Mahamariam herself, who name literally means "Saint/Holy (shree) - Great (maha) - her name (mariaman, a form of maryam/miryam/Mary)", and she represents one of the destructive aspects of the great mother goddess. When we reached her, the Hindu priest removed the giant flower garland put around her neck in veneration, before walking towards me. Somehow intuitively knowing what was going on, I had bowed deeply, as he placed it around my neck. As I left the Temple and made my way back to where I was staying, the local Tamil Indians just kept running up to me and touching my clothing, calling me Sami, which is the same as Swami meaning "saint / sage". A true but bizarre story..... Anyhoo. Om Namaha Shivaya ! LoveLoveLove H:)
+Howard Downes Nina is a revolutionary singer, crazy and fearless! I appreciate the many facets of her one hour punk, theater, lyrical ..... I only have 30 years, and charmed by the artistic blood and true of Nina Hagen!
the way she manages her voice is incredible, I wanted to know about her because I heard her in a cover with Apocalyptica. I thought she was a gotic metal or symphonic rock singer.... I was so wrong. But she`s amazing!
She had a natural singing and never lost that.. and she is open to the cosm. It just sounds through her.. she lets that happen. You cant manage that. It manages YOU. You are just a vessel.
her mother was an opera singer and she is trained in opera as well. She has an amazing instrument. ...and charming almost menacing ....oh i worship her. here on youtube she sings "Fever " you will enjoy that.
If there's anyone in this world that I'd pick to cover one of my favourite rock songs, that person would be Nina Hagen. Always unique, always delivers. Great version, thank you.
oh my god...this is amazing...I was born in september 1980...probably during this performance....now I undersand...THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Don't get her? She is a before-the-Berlin-Wall-came-down opera punk theatrical singer. That's all there in her vocals. Embrace the weirdness/uniqueness
Ok i am the biggest Bowie fan on Earth and while i normally feel nervous at any cover versions,i knew my good old Nina Hagen would blow my mind..and she did not disappoint.
I saw Nina live at the time she released this record. After all these years I've never become bored of her like I have a lot of singers I use to like in the 80s. She is as fanastic now as she ever was.
irreverente, inovadora, exubera nte e incrivelmente brilhante mulher de personalidade incrível única sem igual pura arte, umas das melhores cantoras do mundo!amo ela
She was trained as an opera singer early in life. You can hear it at times but I love her amazing natural sound effects. I'm not real clear on her current Jesus trip but whatever turns you on. No female rocker comes close to what she can do.
Nina Hagen:
The only woman on earth that could give an autotune a nervous breakdown.
And Diamanda Galas!!
her voice is actually pretty damn good, if that is what you're going for. Operatic quality
3 octave range,i believe.wonder if bowie liked this...
Yeah! Patty Waters, Yoko Ono, & Lene Lovich too.
not the only already) look this

Nina reminds me of Siouxsie Sioux and Kate Bush on acid here. Great interpretation delivering the lyrics.
+Howard Downes lovelovelove Nina

Good comparison
On ACID???..... Cocaine.....and tequila.
Her vocals are insane, bravo!!!
Two of my favorite things: Bowie and Hagen
Yes, the pioneers of GOTH
Bat Nuklier
Probably they would decline that honour.
yeah, whatever.
Neuroneos And as I can see in your profile pic you like Kate Bush stuff too! :D
LPSPiesAndLies Indeed, Kate rules.
I'm laughing so hard, and yet this is one of the best covers of this song I've ever heard! Fucking outstanding!
Nina has the most powerful female voice ever.
Over Tina Turner?
@@sholape That's a tough one....
Surely Yes.
And what about Janis Joplin?
Yes, Nina....Simone
Nina Hagen is Lady Stardust!
Marc Bolan is Lady Stardust!
I love David Bowie and I have to say never hearing of this chick is crazy.. she did it justice and I think she absolutely beautiful..
Chick ? More respect for the mother of punk
So in to drugs
@@steveenberg9119 Nope .

She is definitely a goth, haha. And she's a classically trained opera singer, since a child. She can manipulate her voice is amazing ways. ^_^
her mother was an opera singer and she is trained in opera as well. She has an amazing instrument. ...and charming almost menacing ....oh i worship her. here on youtube she sings "Fever " you will enjoy that.
she does not just perform, she really outperforms the original song. Her voice control abilities are really amazing
It's good but it's nowhere near as good as the original...
its amazing what nina did with her own voice with making her own sound effects, rather than using studio trickery like everyone does now
If there's anyone in this world that I'd pick to cover one of my favourite rock songs, that person would be Nina Hagen. Always unique, always delivers. Great version, thank you.
Whatever you think of this version - her vocal abilities are amazing.
She would be laughed off the stage if she was to appear on the xfactor today.
the harsh truth
@@Mister_NO. That's why these shows suck and are the death knell of music.
This is the most captivating performance. This had me, my country loving spouse and kids mesmerized from beginning to end. So happy I found Nina❤
What she do whit her voice is pretty amazing...
That's what greatness sounds like...
I had a punk vhs compilation and this clip was on it.
Made me a fan instantly
OMG, this performance is freaking great ❤️
She's a genius
I can't stop watching this ❤

Oooh, same. I felt that way when one of my teachers recommended the Bauhaus cover of Ziggy Stardust
Love it. Great cover done only the way Nina could do it.
I saw Nina live at the time she released this record. After all these years I've never become bored of her like I have a lot of singers I use to like in the 80s. She is as fanastic now as she ever was.
I love it... That energy, it's unbelievable!

I want her to do " A Rock And Roll Suicide " .
She is one of the original artistic pioneers of my Generation
wow ...what a range ...excellent female Bowie !
Nina Hagen stares into my soul
Love. Love. LOVE. Nina Hagen x
why didn't they have a love-child when Bowie was in Germany. Just imagine the even more imaginative result
Nina offered, but Bowie was afraid it would give him stretch marks.
These two comments are the best, can't stop laughing
Bold of you to assume they didn't.... Kevin Federline was born shortly after Bowie left Nina in Berlin, and it all makes so much sense.
...Bowie was busy with Romy Haag....
Wow, beautiful! So many goosebumps. Nina Hagen does Ziggy Stardust better than Bowie!
Oh my god.. this woman is amazing!
What a powerfull voice! 💜🖤
God, I love this! She's unbelievable! Thank you!

Hi
Incredible.
loved Nina since the late 70's :) East German girl
Another inaugural member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Exile.
+Dennis Hill yes
The only one making Ziggy Stardust era Bowie seem somewhat understated.
What a voice 😀
Yes!!! How is it that we never run out of new clips!? :)
nina hagens cool look & sound. viva individuality
Nina ist wunderebar!
Fun fact: David Bowie lived in Berlin for a few years
Also he had Iggy pop with him

I’m crazy about Nina Hagen, her Divine voice 😊
I Love NINA! You go girl!
it's not a reverb it's a tape delay with a foot pedal connected to the echo volume output

Wow. Just...wow.
She sounded great back then, and even better today. Check out her Rammstein cover with Apocalyptica. Wow, that voice!
Sigh, she was so amazing live.
oh my god I adore her for doing this cover. Bowie would be proud i bet.
Legend! LOVE Nina!!!
