Akame promised not to die, and even cut herself with her one cut death sword. Instead of dying she turns super saiyan, and doesn't suffer any major side effects from doing so. Also was a pleasant break from the hollow 'friends always save the day' and 'bad guys always loose cliche' type stories that keeps getting churned out lately.

When the song goes "When the ashes start rise and the moon falls from the sky and a thousand candles burn into the night when the angels softly cry on the flames below the sky would a thousand souls still pray for you and I..." it seriously fits any sad death like when akami had to kill her sister and tatsumi died literally those were the saddest deaths it could fit very well
Because the fact is when that part is sung all you imagine is someone you love or care about deeply bleeding out or slowly dying in your arms and they ask as a last request for you to hold them while you sing to them and right when you finish they die peacefully with their eyes closed

Think why each character dies, and why the bad guys, or the good ones die to say better. That is not an arena between characters, but there's an emotional chain for every last one of them. They will die either because they lost their purpose, and consumed by guilt and sorrow, or try to protect. They will live because that's the right opposite for their enemies. . . .No one mentions lione, why?..She craved a deep scar within my heart.. Tatsumi was the last person i thought would die and leone was the first that I thought would. Amazing how the show flipped that around on me

The manga is a different story, I recommend you read it, it's the same as the anime until they try to free tatsumi. The story changes from there.
