  • Are you transitioning your makeup bag to zero waste makeup too? Today I'm reviewing a cult favorite, the Besame black cake mascara (a mascara block), and one that is FRESH on the market, the Izzy zero waste mascara, which is zero waste, refillable, recyclable, and even carbon neutral!). I will be reviewing the packaging, performance (how well does it take the heat? Does it transfer to the lower lid?) and brand ethos. Try some zero waste mascara with me! #zerowaste #zerowastemakeup #mascarareview #greenbeauty
    Note: I "riddled" Izzy with the question of what mascara to use after you send yours back to be sterilized and refilled, but I realized after editing that they send you your refill and THEN you send back your old one. Brilliant!

    I remember when my Mom and Grandmother used cake mascara. The one my Mom had was in a small rectangular tin that had a sliding lid. And the tin was sectioned for the brush and the mascara cake. It was red. I loved watching them do their makeup. My Mom thought the brush bristles were to long and trimmed them. when the containers were empty, Mom and Grams let me have them for my Barbies' shoes and other little treasures! Thanks for the memory! I have thought of those things in years.

    Maybelline had a similar product up until the 1970's. A very sustainable brand I am using is Westman Atelier.

    I am suuuuper late to this video, but one thing that made me pick the Besame and maybe someone else will consider if they are like me; is the fact that for months at a time I don’t wear mascara even if I wear the rest of my makeup, and then one day I’ll get the urge and pick it up again. So I was honestly getting so stressed about the fact that for whatever long I was ignoring it bacteria was breeding inside the tube (I am paranoid about eye stuff I’m sorry I don’t want to make anyone feel bad or pressured) and my choices were throw away half used maybe still good mascara because it was past it’s expiration date, risk pinkeye, or buy sample-sizes which in the long run mean more plastic components to get rid off more often. Therefore as the besame mascara dries and that prevents bacteria from growing rampant (and I am guessing we can also wipe the top layer off with alcohol) I am not worried about the wasting part.

      That's a really good point! The Besame should last longer. Do you have any tips for application?

      @@CocoShin The toothbrush it comes with is a bit finicky so I got a reusable mascara/eyebrow brush (they sell them in their website, I didn’t want the eyeliner brush so I got mine from a beauty website in my country), bent it at a 45° angle so it fit better on the tin and I use that. I think the consistency is the most difficult thing to nail so I go veeeeeery slowly, drop by drop. Instead of wetting the brush and then activating the product I use one drop of water on the mascara then rub the brush in, if it’s too thick add one more drop, if it’s too thin rub a little more until it thickens.

    Hi! New viewer here, came to see about the izzy mascara. I'm also working towards moving to a more sustainable lifestyle. I would suggest salt new york if you have not yet tried! Thanks for the review! I would say that the izzy is about the same price as replacing a high-end mascara every few months after the expiration date... so certainly more expensive than drugstore, but if I can choose between $20 a tube for sustainability or just a regular lux brand the choice is clear. I do hope they have better mini's or trials for people to test it out!

    Oooh this was so fun! I've been searching for zero waste mascara and it was so fun to see multiple options! It's honestly so fun to empty out a wasteful (or toxic) product and get a natural and eco version! For the cake mascara, do they always send a brush or can you order without? I think I'd rather just use an old wand

    • @CocoShin
      @CocoShin  3 года назад +1

      Yay! I had you in mind when I made the video because I know you were looking for a zero waste mascara. There is one option to just order the mascara cake, so if you have a container for it, this is a good option. Unfortunately, the tin and the brush are bundled together so if you get the tin you must get the brush. Maybe if you write to them you can tell them you want to opt out of the brush though and they can keep it?

      Yeah, it's funny, right? I don't understand why there is always so much more product than we need, but I feel this is true across all beauty products. Like, when was the last time you finished all of the eyeshadows in one pallete?
