  • Responding to a view about the situation with San Juan del Sur #nicaragua A beautiful paradise in the south of Nicaragua that is all but destroyed by tourists, expats, enclave developments, scams, shady businesses, and gringo pricing. So much to love, but so much to drive you away.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад +8

      Oh, that's definitely on my "to make" list. We caught one gringo running scams half a year ago and caught him essentially bragging about doing it on his youtube channel. But he made the mistake of listing how he was stealing from Nicaraguan employees and not paying his taxes. So when we made a response video to him detailing how his "brags" were actually illegal and that his lawyer had flat out told him he could break the law... he was suddenly fleeing the country, lol. Apparently he made it about 48 hours after that video was live.

    Great Content, Keep it up! just got back from Nica. The first Scam to be aware of is money exchange. Here in the US (MIA) the exchange rate was 27.50 to $1, at the Airport in Managua it was 30 to $1, or 32 to $1 if you exchanged more than $800. However If you are comfortable with it. The Casinos will give you 34 to 1, maybe even a bit more. when the actual exchange rate is 36 to 1

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад +1

      Actual is 37:1. The best rates are always, and the only place you should ever, exchange money in Nicaragua is the street exchangers in front of the banks. They are official. No one else will give you a good rate. Also, there's generally little need to exchange. Credit Cards and USD are accepted universally. It's a dual currency country. If you come only with CDN, just use the ATM to get cash, don't exchange.

      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад +1

      Given you were exchange USD, that makes no sense as USD is an official currency here. It's not "some people accept it", it's literally the second official currency. Everyone from street vendors to hotels accept it, even government offices. In some cases, it is basically required.
      If you exchange at all, you'll lose value. If you are just a tourist, stick to USD. If you live here, switch to Cord and use no USD whatsoever, it's slightly more convenient. But whatever you do, avoid exchanging, you just lose value.

    I heard rumors the property has been taken from foreigners before is this true?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад +2

      People repeat that a lot. But I've never found a case of it. It's purely rumor. It's a common story put out by the US and Canada where that actually happens commonly, so it is easy for people to believe. One of the reasons why like investing in Nicaragua is that property rights are (while complicated) far more iron clad than in the North where the government will just take things away. Most times when someone says that they had something taken like that, I ask if they owned it in the first place and that ends the conversation. Often it is people getting caught having stolen something and then claiming that having to give it back is "having something taken from them", but it was never theirs.
      If you are worried about governments taking things, that's "a risk" literally everywhere. But places like Nicaragua is much less of a risk than in most places. It's not something that anyone actually here has to worry about. In North America, everyone repeats it. In Nicaragua, no one has heard of it.

      Never. They crave foreign investment.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад +1

      Exactly, and realistically, nearly all countries do. Foreign investment is important even for the US. Once you start seizing foreign investments, everything grinds to a halt. Only a few countries in the world have tried that and it instantly goes into a complete collapse. Not a recession, it's famine and war. People often thing, because the US is so casual about property rights for its own citizens, that globally property isn't that protected. but that's the exception, not the norm. If that really were the case, absolutely no one would buy, ever.

    • @Doncheleguapo
      @Doncheleguapo Месяц назад

      I've never heard of this either. Another piece of disinformation that spreads online that I have heard quite often these past few years.
      It begs the question, who benefits from such rumours?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад +2

      The US and Canada benefit because of several reasons.
      1) The US especially has built many policies and careers (and kept people out of prison) by portraying Nicaragua as a lawless land of banditos. If Americans found out about Nicaragua, a lot of people would be in big trouble.
      2) The US and Canada benefit heavily from keeping their workforce from flooding out of the country which, if people truly understood what the options were abroad, would happen. Not 100%, but easily 40%. Keeping people ignorant of the nearby options is absolutely critical to keeping their workers inside their borders.
      3) Politically, the systems in North America depend on making people think that other government options don't work. They need to downplay the idea that true democracies exist and function. That alternative ideologies can have merit. So much of "we do this because it is the only way" depends on people not checking if that is true.

    The problem is actually that the whole industry in SJDS is just catering to the foreigners not for the locals, but only the white rich locals maybe. I was there past July on my vacation from NY and I was not allowed to enter in a nightclub, I was not allowed to enter I was told the reason was that "only if I was dress in white and with no shorts" As I peeked inside and saw others that where wearing shorts and sandals and all different colors, I realized that the only requirement was actually to be a white foreigner, it seems. Of course I looked like a local, and probably make more money than any of the people in the club, but it did not matter, they refused to let me in. I was born in Nicaragua but grew up in NY and was raised here in NY, I would never buy any property in SJDS and I think I will rarely if any go and ever visit SJDS, is not worth it and its in a really sad state of decadence. They can keep that dump, I actually invite all the foreigners to keep coming to SJDS and spend their money and eventually make it worse than what it is. I will stick to the other places that are more beautiful than that town. Poneloya, El Velero, Pochomil, Casares , La Boquita, etc... there is lots of other beaches on the Pacific and then there is the Atlantic side of Nicaragua that's also beautiful. So yes, keep going to SJDS, that includes the US vacationers and the ones that buy the properties in the area, keep bringing the prices up and stay away from the rest of the country.

    How is SJDS a tourist hub? Are you confusing SJDS with Granada? They have one 4 star motel with 25 rooms which except for Holidays is 80% empty. There are no tourist buses, nor a transportation hub. There only tourist attraction is there Jesus statue which is the 3rd largest in the world. There beaches are mud with no white sand. The only tourists you see are back backers. Maybe 5% of population are expats living on a fixed income. There is very little decent housing which meets western standards. There are lots of places to get a good meal for $5 to $10. The Pronto,' AM/PM charge the same prices as the entire Nica. In almost 4 years I have never been charged a gringo tax, Scammers yes, but mostly the Gringos who invested there money stupidly and have the "Gringo God" mindset you discussed in a former video.
