I'm 72 yrs old. First heard John back in the '70s. I was simply amazed at what I was hearing. He was the first guitarist with such speed & smoothness. Now you throw the great Jimmy Herring in with him, I'm speechless. One of the greatest EVER.👍👍👍👍👍✌️
My God. I have heard a lot of Mclaughlin and this is some of the hottest lightning playing of his. There is something profoundly spiritual about his playing that I have never heard in any other guitar players who do fast lines like that. To be still playing like this in his 70s is just unbelievable.
the reason is always come back to this video after listening to the studio version is the fact that the main riff sounds so fucking powerful like a damn train hitting me in the face and yet they play it so nonchalantly effortless, not even knowing what they do to my head.. it makes the whole thing fuck me up even more. how the fuck does somebody even come up with such a powerful tune, it’s just mind fucking blowing.. fuck
Can I gloat for a second? I was at this show. Dead center...at the very last row in the balcony. Set up your laptop in your living room and then go watch from your kitchen, and you'll reproduce the experience. But I was there. I never get to see any classic performances, so thanks for indulging me.
Respektvoll Rolf Sta.
WOW! What a great walk down memory lane. I saw them perform in San Antonio, TX in the 70's. Once their music is in your head,it's not going any where...one of the most unique bands I have ever seen.
Great sounding and magnificently played version of this piece! The Birds of Fire album, Zappa's Hot Rats, and Bright Size life by Pat Metheney were the trio of releases that me turned from rock back in the day. What an awesome time for music!
Love this band alot. Seen them many time. Billy Cobham on Drums, Jerry Goodman on Violin. Never disappointed once solid performance by everyone. They put you where u need to be.
wow wow wow!!! this version is the best!!! i couldn't possibly thank you enough for sharing phriend!!! gratitude eternal!!! smiles of the beyond! :) philshzilla
Godamm, I kick myself for not getting tickets when he did that last tour. Saw him three times in high school, twice with MO and once with Santana and Cobham. MO always the highlight of concert experience.
Thos is a performance by Maclaughlin's 4th Dimension and the Jimmy Herring Band. It's not Mahavishnu. Incredible, yes, and that's Msclaugjlin, but it's not MVO.
I did a little drumming back in the late '60s. Garage band no big deal. First time I heard Billy Cobham, I think he did an album with Jeff Beck. My jaw hit the floor. I agree with you. 👍👍👍
jm has a more biting tone on the that prs doubleneck than he usually has with his direct to desk tone he usually uses with the dimension band ,i prefer the biting tone, sounds more alive.jimmy herring rips too, whole band are great

Mr McLaughlin plays John Coltrane’s ...Sheets of Sound...his finger speed becomes an implication of something else...other than notes and scales
@@cosmicman621 yes I'm with you there
It's what happens when you're a real musician.
@Asymmatrix yes that is true 👍

Jeff Sipe is awesome!
Beautiful
when played by John M it always sounds right. I've seen great copies, but nothing beats the original masters version.
it's both john AND jimmy herring who are the masters here
Is that Sharay Reed on bass? Can we get a list of the musicians please?
actually quite sad That john is not doing the main soloing
Crazy slightly laid back pocket. I like
Just awesome
Fantastic
Respect John 🙏
let me be Laughlin,..like Childrens,..hahha,..Power@U2,..folks!

Yes sir it's by the 4th Dimension here but this tune from 1972 is credited to & was performed by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Amazing jam from a wonderful album.visions ❤️
