With very special guest John McLaughlin performing two songs called SOMEWHERE IN HEAVEN & CANTO DE XANGO composed by Baden Powell. From an old VHS tape tape that I digitized recently. Converting old VHS tapes to digital found this interesting one of Dominic Miller (STING) jamming for the very first time with Howard Levy - Harmonica, Doug Wimbish - Bass, Will Cahoun - Drums & Demitrios Pappas - Keyboards. Recorded at Milkboy Studios, Philadelphia, 2005. Total Running Time 45 minutes (3 parts). Enjoy this time travel and some great playing by all artists.

Wow, jeff more than holds his own here, john often just sounds like a 33 rpm record at 78 rpm, while jeff is almost Hendrix like in his musical force. I'm sorry but any rock guitarist sharing a stage with John Mcglaughlin is in a speed competition that is not to the advantage of their musical style. Only Jeff Beck could have kept his style intact in such a pairing. Beck really was the most talented of the yardbirds ,just amazing, and somehow below the radar of stardom for many, but not for guitarists. A musicians musician. Today I will order every cd he ever made.

I'm 72 yrs old. First heard John back in the '70s. I was simply amazed at what I was hearing. He was the first guitarist with such speed & smoothness. Now you throw the great Jimmy Herring in with him, I'm speechless. One of the greatest EVER.👍👍👍👍👍✌️

Saw the Gayle Moran, Narada & Ponty tour in late 73, early 74 at Cornell. WONDERFUL! It was the 4th time I had seen Mahavishnu, but with Billy, Jerry, Jan, & Rick band.

I did a little drumming back in the late '60s. Garage band no big deal. First time I heard Billy Cobham, I think he did an album with Jeff Beck. My jaw hit the floor. I agree with you. 👍👍👍

Well if john was the star guitarist then Jeff was the star musician. Playing guitar on a stage with John McLaughlin means being in a competition. In my universe Jeff Beck made by far the larger musical statement here. John played super fast scales. Jeff played almost like Hendrix and drove the music. And, I am not someone who has a lot of Beck's recordings. But that is about to change

John is a band leader. He's all about the other guy. He likes to keep it original and untraveled. He doesn't need to prove anything. Jimmy is an extremely good dude and guarantee he is not trying to show John up! John also deals with serious bouts of Arthritis. He's into his 80s, now. John is a legend as a human being and then a musician!!
Good thoughts, but I'm skeptical about how bad his arthritis is. I know he talked about it being the reason for the farewell aspect of this tour. He expected he was going to be unable to play shortly after based on his mother's history with it. My mother and sister also have it pretty bad in their hands, and thank goodness, I don't, so one cannot assume we will suffer the same way as our parents. The main reason I doubt it's become a serious problem so far is that more than 5 years later he still moves like a gazelle over that fretboard; in recent shows, I have seen no signs that he has lost a beat, and playing at that level with serious arthritis would in my opinion, be impossible. I am sympathetic if I'm wrong, as it sucks to be curtailed in your favorite thing by physical pain and degradation, but I believe and hope that he dodged that bullet, at least so far. I agree with the legend status; his activism on behalf of India is inspiring, and of course 20th century music would be far poorer had he not burned his brilliant inner mounting flame into our brains, changing us for the better!
@Gregorypeckory Some good thoughts. I've been an athlete, Candy Maker, and 25 years as a UPS driver. I'm 61, and I'm worn out. My hands and wrists are full of osteoarthritis. With John's speed and constant playing into his 80s. I would think it would have caught up to him by now. I imagine the only arthritis that's hereditary is rumatoid. Just being old is good enough excuse to retire or to slow down. 3 years ago, I tried to learn the electric base. Can't even pluck or hold a pick or wrap my hand around the board. I guess I started too late. I'm whining too much. I'm very blessed to have an appreciation and ok understanding of music. I can't complain.
As much as I love John, there just isn't anyone on Jeff's level. 😮

The world’s greatest players in the decade of the universe’s worse sound. I’d like to compliment the musicians but this lifeless plastic sound is killing it for me. Beck’s guitar still sounds kinda ok (even really good at times!) but the rest, sorry 🤢🤮 I will never get that 80s sound. …(And I do realize that this is probably not even from the 80s. It’s 80s sound nevertheless).
