"They Shall Not Grow Old" is astonishing. I believe that not only did they do the lip reading that they mention in this video but they also allowed for Regional accents and dialects based on the different battalions etc It is an amazing, powerful and haunting piece of film making that will live with you long after you watch it. In the UK they showed it on Remembrance Day 2018 as it was the Centenary. It really brings home the reality of the 1st World War, the initial sense of adventure and derring do and the harsh reality. Your right about the accents thing. As another cool side notes a bunch of the songs which were actually sung by the troops in life were not added till the movie was almost done. Peter Jackson needed something to fill certain parts of the movies but didn't like a lot of the music they had tried already. So the BBC sent him the lyrics to a bunch of the songs, but being in New Zealand no one had the right accent so they went to the British Consulate and got a bunch of random guys to sing them so it would sound like average soldiers taking a break instead of professional singers. Also Niko is right the effect is used for more than just showing off they could do it, the color is for the story telling of the movie. In fact they actually get the colors on the some of the tanks and vehicles wrong because there references are from later but similar looking models after the war that were a different color, but that obviously isn't the point. EVERYONE should see this movie, it is a masterpiece and I am so glad they gave it attention.
Also i liked how when the movie goes from the "training" to the front lines, there starts this constant rumble in the background. They should revisit Terminator 2. It still holds up! Remember when every electronics store used T2 to demonstrate their best home theatre setups? I'm old.
What's important to remember about The Polar Express is that it's essentially a highly stylized cartoon based on a children's book, the look of the characters in the film don't need to appear photo real because the source material and context don't require them to.
Happy Birthday, Niko! My birthday was also today. I am still surprised to see that the quality of your videos keep getting better, keep it up! You guys have been a huge inspiration for me taking my RUclips channel seriously, thank you!

Twister, is such a good movie. I rewatched it last year, and got teary during the aunts house scene. It's kind of fascinating how things can hit different throughout your life.
“They Shall Not Grow Old” is a milestone in film history. Phenomenal film. I do photo colourisation and the thought of applying this to film in such a natural and faithful way is a huge accomplishment!
Sadly we may not really see something like it again. Due to just how time consuming a process it is. As it is, it took the confluence of the 100-year anniversary of the war creating a bump in public interest, and the commitment and dedication of one of the most successful filmmakers in recent years in Peter Jackson spearheading the project. We may see similar documentaries in the future, but likely they'll be much shorter than and/or with not quite the attention to detail as TSNGO. Or just on a different subject matter than WWI (which would still be interesting, don't get me wrong, just not the same).
Yeah, Harry Potter films had incredible VFX. Except Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2 . The Room of Requirements scene where everything's catching fire looks quite fake
James Mangold has actually said exactly what they did and it’s so basic but worked very well. They were shaking the camera a lot, and then used a warp stabilizer on it. Everyone had to be really still, and Hugh Jackman had five-six people with ropes, holding him back to simulate him struggling to move. So yeah, you can actually do that effect, from shooting to editing, in five minutes.
Eli Peter exactly. I loved the film and thought the deaging looked great for the most part but there was some uncanny valley and physical things that were off too.
Vicodyn that’s the scene I was talking about. I think maybe a body double with his face matched on it would have been the better route for that scene. That’s the only one that really stood out though to me, the rest is great.
@@hmvideos3601 yeah it's vfx not cgi lol I think theres a difference. Either way though it's a very impressive movie and I loved it. The amount of work is unreal.
Darius Adrian found parts of that movie hard to watch because of the cgi... not just De Niro... Pesce looked wonky too to my eyes. But a in-depth analysis would be interesting to hear.
It was actually decently good. A little too much “Scorsesee” formula but the acting was solid I thought. Its just fun watching those mob guys do their thing. I think Paccino, for his age and current health, did great.
I'm a technical artist working in games. It's fascinating to see your breakdowns of these old movies and inspires me to try some of the techniques we used to use on older films in real-time with current-gen hardware :) I recently discovered this channel and have binge watched a tonne of episodes. Thanks a tonne for all of your hard work!
It's been a while since I've seen that movie, I had forgotten how realistic it looks. At the same time, it is still stylised in a way that puts it in the realm of cartoon for me and I don't recall being put off in any way. Maybe that's an important distinction between movies that are cartoons at their core but use very high quality graphics (Pixar) and movies that simulate realism but fall short (Polar Express)?
@Om Patel Yeah, I think Tintin is kinda underrated and the technology developed by Weta was leaps and bounds ahead of The Polar Express seven years prior. However, the goal was to find an in-between with photo-real people and Hégre designs, and sometimes I feel the 2D drawings do not exactly translate to 3D animation, especially when some aspects are intended to be photo-real but others are intended to be cartoony. I guess for me it works more than it doesn't, but there is a niggling uncanny valley sense in the back of my head.
I'm guessing that Niko got it wrong, since I think I saw Hitler with his tapered mustache in that footage. He still had a full handlebar mustache during WWI, and got it shaved down between wars.
@@Kindrick It is world war one footage; the most commonly used camera by both sides was motorized, not hand cranked. Sound was still not able to be captured by the camera itself (the motor was too loud) but some ww2 footage has sound captured at the same time, by broadcasting trucks further back from the action.

That's funny, I always thought it was universally beloved. Who knew
Same
Don't worry my dude, I love it too. I remember being amazed by it when it came out, thinking how damn good it looked on top of being a great film.
Tucker Kinney lol, when I was in elementary school, we would have polar express day where we would watch it and we were allowed to come to school in pajamas. Made it one of my favorite Christmas movies. Now everyone hates it. Oh well 😂
I love this movie too
They should revisit Terminator 2.
True. They're meant to look like living oil paintings, not real people. If you watch the movie with that mindset they truly do start to feel alive.
finally some love for Twister, a forgotten gem of the 90s
we’re in the suck zone.....
Not a fan of the movie (maybe because my parents put it on every chance they get like with forest gump)
Before watching this I literally thought, "Corridor shouldn't be affected by COPPA should it be established." And then the merch plug happens. 😂😂😂
They don't meet the standards established to be considered to be "directed at kids."
@@Kindrick let's hope not. I mean alot of their past videos where video game related. Hopefully those broad ass terms in the law don't ruin things.
I mean, I guess that's why Sam started the merch plug with a lot of cursing.
Idk man, I'm basically being screamed at every time I upload by those warnings/prompts and I literally don't even have human beings in my content 🤷♂️

Clint knows a lot about Interstellar even though he's never seen any movie.
Yall should react to the Norwegian found footage film: The Troll Hunter
Why lol
@@EddieFreak Because this is an animation/CGI special effects reaction channel. And that movie has CGI special effects. Seems fairly straightforward to me.
Teejay Kaye nothing noteworthy though. Almost every movie has special effects, so you want them to react to every movie? What would they say about troll hunter? “Wow, that troll is CGI. Next movie.”
@@EddieFreak nah because they always said that they wanna see less mainstream stuff. This is a very low budget film that has great cgi
That was a pretty great film
Godzilla: King of The Monsters - King Ghidorah's head regeneration.
Heck, just EVERY Monsterverse movie thus far. The airport and bridge scenes from *_Godzilla (2014)_* to start off, then Kong vs. the giant Skullcrawler in *_Kong: Skull Island_* next, and then scenes like the battle in Antarctica or Godzilla's rebirth from *_Godzilla: King of the Monsters_* as the finale.
yeah boy
It's like an uncircumcised thingy.
Disney's Dinosaur and Final Fantasy: Spirits Within should be next.
Literally just saw Dinosaurs
Me too and for the groundbreaking movie it was at the time, that has not aged very well at all.
When The Spirits Within came out on DVD my family and I were sitting there questioning if it was real or not.
DINOSAURS PLZZZZZ u mean final fantasy or dinosaurs? Bc to me that film still holds up amazingly to me
Thank you guys so much for covering They Shall Not Grow Old, we really cannot forget this history

I loved Polar Express souch as a kid, in fact, it made me become a railfan. I also loved how they also used Pere Marquette 1225 as the basis of the locomotive, so cool!
Chronicles of Narnia!
Especially Lucy's interaction with Aslan - fur CG

React to some of the old Harry Potter movies.
Yeah, Harry Potter films had incredible VFX.
Except Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2 . The Room of Requirements scene where everything's catching fire looks quite fake
the voldemort /dumbledore fight scene in "the order of the phoenix" is awesome
No don’t. Witchcraft is so wack.
@@minhaj_khan The whole series had very hit and miss effects, likely due to the very limited time they had.
@@minhaj_khan That scene in the third one where Hermione is on the Whomping Willow looks very fake too, especially when she grabs Harry.
I realize no one here is even greeting Niko a happy birthday.
Happy Birthday Niko! 🎂🎉😊

Omg I am so glad y'all did Twister. That is one of my all-time favorite movies.
It’s Niko’s birthday?
**Inhales.** Ha- **Demonetized.**
Nope. The song was ruled in the public domain back in 2016.
Still really weird such a popular song could get you demonetized tho
@@cegf3d It's because someone copyrighted the song.
React to Logan, the scene where Xavier is having a seizure at the Vegas hotel.
React to Annihilation. Especially the end scene w the alien and just everything in the Shimmer. It’s a super good
movie
Yessss! I was waiting for u guys to do Twister.
PLEASE DO MY ALL TIME FAVORITE:
"STARSHIP TROOPERS"
It had fantastic VFX.
Saw it again few weeks ago, still looks good
It aged beautifully
VFX Artists React to Spy Kids 3 could warrant its own episode.
React to deaging and physical performances in “the Irishman”.
Yes please! Some of it looks really good, but the Joe Pesci pretty rough at times.
They should react to Loving Vincent. Every frame is a real painting in the style of Van Gogh stitched together.
Yes! They should absolutely do this.
Technically not cgi tho lol
@@harrynguyen2503 stitching frames together is a form of vfx
@@hmvideos3601 yeah it's vfx not cgi lol I think theres a difference. Either way though it's a very impressive movie and I loved it. The amount of work is unreal.
@@harrynguyen2503 You realise they react to lots of different effects not just "CGI" right?
The sound is strangely muddy in this episode, especially Niko’s.
I was thinking it was my gear. xD
I thought Niko was sick
React to young Robert Di Niro in "The Irishman" on Netflix.
Darius Adrian found parts of that movie hard to watch because of the cgi... not just De Niro... Pesce looked wonky too to my eyes. But a in-depth analysis would be interesting to hear.
@@Buttercup697 I think most of it was pretty good but none of it was unnoticeable.
I’m watching it right now and I‘d love to know what it is that makes it look odd at times
also not just De Niro, also Pacino and Pesci
It was actually decently good. A little too much “Scorsesee” formula but the acting was solid I thought. Its just fun watching those mob guys do their thing. I think Paccino, for his age and current health, did great.
I'm a technical artist working in games. It's fascinating to see your breakdowns of these old movies and inspires me to try some of the techniques we used to use on older films in real-time with current-gen hardware :)
I recently discovered this channel and have binge watched a tonne of episodes. Thanks a tonne for all of your hard work!
Is the “Adventures of Tin Tin” in the uncanny valley
It's been a while since I've seen that movie, I had forgotten how realistic it looks. At the same time, it is still stylised in a way that puts it in the realm of cartoon for me and I don't recall being put off in any way. Maybe that's an important distinction between movies that are cartoons at their core but use very high quality graphics (Pixar) and movies that simulate realism but fall short (Polar Express)?
Absolutely
I think the designs for some characters work better than others - I love how Haddock looks, but Tintin himself does seem a bit weird to look at.
It’s way better in my opinion.
React to:
- Godzilla 2000
- GMK
- Godzilla 2014
- Shin Godzilla
- Godzilla KOTM
Yes time for the epic Godzilla binge watch
YES Shin Godzilla please!
I like the way this one thinks
GODZILLA BINGE EPISODE, YES!
6:52 Niko: "They took old black and white world war 1 film footage..."
9:46 Wren: "It's not just old world war 2 footage..."
I'm guessing that Niko got it wrong, since I think I saw Hitler with his tapered mustache in that footage. He still had a full handlebar mustache during WWI, and got it shaved down between wars.
@@Kindrick The movie is a WW1 movie. So.
@@Kindrick It is world war one footage; the most commonly used camera by both sides was motorized, not hand cranked. Sound was still not able to be captured by the camera itself (the motor was too loud) but some ww2 footage has sound captured at the same time, by broadcasting trucks further back from the action.
@@Kindrick I love They shall not grow old and I can tell you it's about ww1, not ww2
