Imagine “patriots” wanting a man imprisoned for 3 years over a poem as if the First Amendment didn’t exist.

    Censorship still exists today.

How was he not protected by the first amendment?

In the 1920s? You weren't allowed to point out America's shortcomings. That's just the way it was. Unfortunately, we may be headed back in that direction.

@@pamelas1002 lol true but it's still wild

The Bill of Rights was only gradually applied to state law by way of the 14th amendment. The First Amendment did not become applicable until Everson v. Board of Education in 1947. But even then, obscenity was treated as an exception.

The poem was ruled to be obscene, and obscenity isn't protected speech.

How righteous and moral they were back then. Certain people want to return to such moralism. The poem seems truthful, the truth should never be immoral. g

Interesting. Can someone please send me a web link or info about this poem? I can't seem to find anything.

Funny…none of the seven “George Carlinisms” are contained in this poem.
So, therefore, I don’t get the censorship and someone will have to explain just what someone found offensive here.
Regardless of whether the poem itself was second rate or whatever.

Its even worse in Soviet Union. A lot of opposition was either executed or sent to concentration camps (gulags). Also religion was a taboo (later it was used as a manipulation tool) and you could've been deported from your own home, because you are an ethnic minority
