- Former F1 driver Jarno Trulli test drives the new Formula E car in France. The Italian drove the fully-electric single-seater featuring the full 200kw (270bhp) race-mode battery in mid-March 2014.

As a F1 fan, I love this...I think Formula E is going to be the future of formula racing.

Oh my God I love that sound! It's like a jet engine. Why is everyone so against the progress in technology? It's really sad if after 100 years from now we are still stuck with combustion engine just because people thought it is the only true way to do it. Back in the beginning of 1900 steam engines were more powerful than combustion engines, but still we didn't stubbornly stick with steam engines.

The actual series is using V6 with turbo charge and in progress it is really save to say that it will go down on V4

I think I am going to enjoy this and it will be competitive especially with so many ex formula 1 drivers in it too.
It will be good because even with some overlapping this series will keep us entertained in the Formula 1 off season / northern winter.

That’s not the engine. All you’re hearing is the transmission. There’s a little bit of hum from the engine but just sounds like a formula 1 with a muted engine
C´mon, people! The sound is not so bad. It reminds me a bit of the 1966 Batman series Batmobile engine. It´s a brand new concept. Accept! : )
This series has the potential to be brilliant. It's great for drivers who have left F1 as it offers a similar style of racing!

This opens up the possibility to race indoors(for bad weather or winter/rain). Or set up a course to pass through buildings.

It doesn't have that Formula 1 series sound so some fans probably won't like it, but I think it has a lot of potential to show what all electric can do. I'm looking forward to seeing it in competition.

Not used to seeing such low profile tires on a formula car.
Trulli sounds like a real gentleman and a real racer. Put him in anything on wheels and he'll try to make it go faster.

You may not know this, but Jarno Trulli is completely finnish name. First name Jarno comes from our great motor cycle legend Jarno Saarinen who sadly lost his life 1973, and the last name Trulli means an Easter witch, but it also could be a Halloween witch or wizard.
Jarno is a great guy and good driver. It was sad that his career in F1 ended too soon.
I love the sound of this car and it's a beautiful design.
Will be interesting to see how much attention this gets.

Looks like some body design concepts used are similar to the Dallara DW12. These electric cars will be blazingly fast, just a matter of time. Look how electric power rc cars overtaking nitro/gas. The energy produced by these little electric motors is incredible.

Formula E cars are great ushering in a new generation of racing and new cars. The sound of these race cars are the sound of the future. The concept of an electric car in general has been around for a very long time, it just was a question of the technology arriving.

Will love to see this cars race on the same tracks and on the same day of the formula one , and see the f1s go back to the 2004-2006 v10s with good power for 1500 horsepower and reliability

For me it is like the TTXGP, I followed the races year after year since 2009 and they improved so much after every race.
We can expect a lot from the E-formula.
Very cool. Only thing I would say is that the car doesn't seem very 'fast'. 270bhp is a decent amount for a single-seater (around the same as an F3 car) but I imagine this weighs more due to the batteries etc.
Saying that though, they'll be racing on city circuits that presumably are tight and 'point and squirt' in nature, so outright speed isn't something that's needed. I also think they'll sound pretty cool all racing together, that whirring sound is not that bad really.
i hope this could turn into a gateway series to f1 like formula 3, gp2, and other formula series. that would be a good place for formula-e especially with the similar characteristics to f1 regarding torque and aero

to that guy complaining about road tyres (and who's comment I don't seem to be able to reply to)
they aren't road tyres. they were specially designed for this car. a recent piece in motorsport magazine explained that they act like any other racing tyre. my guess is they had be a bit different to deal with the forces of an electric drivetrain, which usually means more torque.
Interesting to see that it has shifter paddles, didn't expect that from an E car. So looking forward to the series!
Electric motors have a huge rev range, but generally their available torque is an inverse of rotational speed. Adding in a gearbox allows the electric motor to spin slower, so it can deliver more torque.
Glad to have had the chance to watch V10's roar driven by passionate racers such as Kimi, Schumi, Hamilton, Alonso just to mention a few. Also, to have enjoyed creative design in Ferrari, Williams, Lotus, McLaren vehicles. It looks like FIA is investing in their future. I wonder what a die hard, American Nascar fan would say about FIA Formula E? I guess I'm reaching the endangered species label...Petrol addict.

I really look forward to watching these race, really. This one car here sounds really cool-imagine what it will be like with dozens of them on the track at once. Sure it's different, but by no means is it silent. Im glad they took this step, the oil is getting harder and harder to find, and the last thing we need is to ignore the problem and keep racing cars on a resource that is, whether you all like it or not, limited.
Its nice to see all racing electric cars and normal electric cars are continue develop for our mother earth and easy to way to avoid accident,traffic,and climate change

this is the future of racing, no matter about the sound, torque, weight, do not compare formula E to F 1, don't get me wrong F 1 is great whilst the fuel stocks remain, once the fuel has run out F 1 will be no more unless an alternative fuel source can be invented for the cars, will be looking forward to hopefully the dawn of new era of motor racing

For those who think that "noise" is everything on cars, you must understand that really races is about pilots and cars.
F-1 is the master now, but new generations will replace nowadays. This cars shows us the future. It's only a start, but new generations will love new sports and styles.
Sound is only an affix in a way to make things in this generation. It would be replaces by another, as has always been.

People complain about the noise. People complain about anything they can when it comes to new stuff.
There is a guy who has an electric scooter who goes down the road where I live, it sounds awesome.
Now that I'm hearing it in a mic that doesn't pick up all the stupid wind instead, it sounds almost like a jet. It's louder than I expected, and knowing some of the specs, I'm glad to concede that these are serious machines.
Still though, I have issues with a formula car that's almost a ton and tops out at about 150. A couple extra gears and maybe a quarter ton of weight off and it'll fly-and that's what makes a fully-formed formula racer to me. How fast is it in all areas?

About the electric motor, the ratio of conversion of energy is very high(can reach 97%) and relatively easy to reach.
So the real competition is the battery and specially the density of energy.
The energy density of gasoline is approximately 13 kW·h/kg, which corresponds to 1.7 kW·h/kg of energy provided to the wheels after losses.
The theoretical energy density of the lithium-air battery (one of the candidate for next gen battery) is 12 kW·h/kg (43.2 MJ/kg) excluding the oxygen mass. It has been theorized that the same 1.7 kW·h/kg could reach the wheels using Li-air after losses from over-potentials,
This to say that Electric car will surpass gasoline car in a near future specially if we consider the strategic importance of electric energy storage.
for those who which to see the ultimate technical challenge of terrestrial racing car, it should be done without pilots inside, since the accelerations technically possible, could smash the pilot's brain.
I am in favor of racing car with the pilots outside of the car and no more limitation of any sort!
Funny , nobody speak about all those sounds which we have never heard. Aerodynamic, limit of lateral adherence of the tyres , deceleration, gearbox , those sounds are much more interesting, if we consider the art of piloting.
