- On our voyage from Quebec to Horta in September 2013 we had great wind. Our sailing distance in 124 hours was 1106 nautical miles, an average of a little under 9 knots. This video by Jannik Rathke was shot while climbing the main mast to the Main Royal Yard.

I sailed on this ship in 1967 and it STILL looks pretty much the same. You should try beein out on the royalyardarm reefing sail in strong winds. Quite a different experience
No thank you! We DID enjoy being on the similar Tall Ship, Artemis, on the Thames in April! Proper thrill!
Sailors are out of their rigging minds, each and every one of them. May God bless them all, and give them mercy.
+JoeOvercoat ???
bobbbob22508 I'd like to explain, but cannot, and I would tell you, but will not, as all I can say is...'family issues'. :P
you are correct and we love it
My dad was a Bosun. I've always wanted to go to sea.
Hello Steve, thank you for the post. What they do depends on the situation. If we see that the wind force is increasing we take down sails, as we do not need them. If the weather is unstable and we would expect unpredictable weather systems we also take in sails to reduce risk. In the event that the winds favorable we would set sails if needed. You can also give up the sails from deck, meaning you let the sails "blow out" not giving you propulsion.
How would you replace a broken mast at sea?
Hope the other two can get you home.
@@ethanshinabarger4390 they did it in one of the Aubrey books. They raised it with ropes from the other two masts. It was not easy, and if the mast slipped when high aloft "it would plunge like a dagger through all the the decks and hull and send them all to the bottom." (rough quote)
This is one of the most incredible videos. My granddaughter is on this boat and I hope she doesn't try it.
Absolutely terrifying but oh so beautiful...
Wow. 9 knots? Well done, sailors!
I’ve been curious to see how a crewman negotiates the futtock shrouds to get onto the top for years. The overhang must be terrifying at first. And they used to do it without safety harness and hooks! Many thanks. .
Why don't you turn down the volume of the music so we can hear what you are saying up there in the mast? That would be nice! Apart from that I find it awesome and thrilling! Thanks for sharing. :-)
I guess, for clarity, I was hoping that one of them would post a video of them actually working in the yards. My wife can hardly believe Bethany (onboard now) would ever go aloft.... good show!!
Awesome Clip, well done
Another great video of the climb. I, for one, would love to know more about the job they have to do once they get there?
Love this videoand also love the music. Can you tell me who is signing here ?
Nice and safe with a harness
Nads of steel.
Spell bound even though I felt quite ill just watching it!
The music destroys it.
phew, it's not just me... he could have chosen a really well-suited music track... or even better, NO music actually.. and it would have been much more powerful
