I'm heavy handed as well and I struggled with these... but as a beginner I assumed it was probably me, and not the pens. So I'm glad to know it's not just me!
To be fair I am far from an expert at brush lettering. I am beginning to test out the Koi Watercolor pens (I'll be reviewing those next week) and those are thus far working out magnificently with my heavy handedness!
As a newbie, and a lefty these are like bristle torture, my writing shakes so uncontrollably, it like I was lettering in my birthday suit while laying in an ice bath. Man you make it look easy.
Your reviews are great Cindy - I love that you consider all the uses for a pen and what other people might like about them even if they don't particularly suit you - as someone who doesn't have a huge budget for art supplies detailed reviews like these help me make a more informed decision about what I invest my money in. Keep up the reviews love them!
I'm trying to be as in depth as possible - I have particular needs being heavy handed, and I know not everyone has the same needs I do. Thank you so much!!
Happy to see that I'm not the only one who felt that way about the Sakura Brush!!! I bought a black one when I was starting out and it was horrible (for the pen and me). I put such a heavy hand on it that it frayed after like, 5 uses >.
I'm not very heavy handed, but I always struggle with the transition to the upstroke. I picked up one of these in black and the transition feels like trying to get up off a couch that's too soft... not very graceful
Can you please suggest a pen that is good for a beginner who is heavy handed? I'm currently living in Sweden so getting access to every brand is difficult.?
Thank you for checking for quick drying! That is THE most important thing for me when I go to buy any kind of pen. I am a lefty, and I always have major issues with "Inky Pinky "!
Lol I had a micron fineliner and I broke the tiny nib because I was writing so hard. I somehow made a large hole in the metal part of the pen and in spilled everywhere.
I love these pens! I think they are perfect for me. I love the flexibility of the pens and the fullness of the colors. When comparing them with other brush pens I never found another with the same qualities. I find it really annoying when a pen gets darker and darker and darker when you brush over it, since I color with them and not write as much. These pens don’t do that. But they don’t have a lot of colors :( Any tips on brands like this?
Have you tried Fabre Castel Pitt pens? I don’t like their fine liners (they just feel too light and cheap to me even though they aren’t) but I love my brush one for filling in
i am not heavy handed per se, but these are delicate and i use them in conjunction with the micron liner pens and pn pens for zentangle zia's, and in general, they are perfect. given the tangling technique is a bit structured, and mind-focus oriented vs my alter ego art journaling side, which allows for bigger expressions and layers, i love the contrast of light and dark, weight and delicacy, and appreciate the many tools that teach me when to use them for what outcome.
ok..so good I'm not the only one having a hard time with sakura brush pens. I thought I can never do this calligraphy thing because I can't make it good with this brush pen.
I'm glad you reviewed these brushes. I bought one as my first "brush" pen and thought I was just horrible at the upstroke. I was all shaky/separated and glad it wasn't just me.
Exactly my feelings about this brush pen, thanks for the awesome review I’ll just be checking out the Microns without buying the Brushes. My wallet thanks you ❤️
The only way I can get these to even kind of work for me is if I’m lettering on something huge. I have to write at least 5x larger than normal that I feel like I’m making a billboard!😂 But for everyday instances like you demonstrated, I knew it wasn’t going to work out. And like someone said in a comment before mine, which I’ll now paraphrase (😜) I’m glad I’m not just some sad sack screwing everything up! It’s not just me!

Cindy Guentert-Baldo Can't wait to see that review! I was wondering if you have tried the Koi line.
I just bought this pen and am struggling with the same thing!! I think I will return it

That is a very descriptive... description! hahahaha
i thought as a beginner i might just have sucked trying to use these but its good to know other people had a similar struggle.
" this situation " love that description!!! You rock.
I am pretty sure in one of my videos I have a running total of how many times I refer to something as a situation hahaha

Love re watching your old stuff

My daughter is a lefty and struggles with this ALL THE TIME.
The Prismacolor brush pen is a little harder to control. But, I still prefer it to this one because it is darker.

oh no!!
I have the Sakura Pigma Brush Pens and primarily use them to practice my lettering and in my traveler's notebook.
I think I am going to use them to practice lightening up my heavy grip. I REALLY need to do that.

I bet for a looser style of brush calligraphy they would be fantastic, I just haven't ever managed to be good at that style. haha

I just got a set of Sakura fineliners from Walgreens. They were 2$ a piece and come in a ton of different colors:)
really?? I'll have to go look at mine! thanks!
I wish I would have watched this before buying them, lol.
Just got these today. Frayed tips already.
I found this pen really difficult to use as a beginner!! As you said I found the transition between pressures really messy 😩😩😩
It's just so... floppy. haha
I think that the pens are difficult for letterers because they are meant for drawing not letterers.
Got this pen today, could not use it...
Picked up a 3 pack (blue, black, red) for $10 at Micheals.
07:27 Are you drinking mate?
lol iron 👊🏽
I need a metal version of that emoji lol
I started learning calligraphy with this pen and it was the worse for me. I hate this pen.
