Welcome to my new series: STATIONERY SHOWDOWN, where I compare different art supplies and decide which ones are the best. Today's video is the battle of the black fineliners...which do you think is going to win?? PS. All products are linked in the description box!
AmandaRachLee was not surprised at all with the result of the Sakura as that's my favorite too but I was surprised that stabilo point 88 performed better than the staedtler triplus since I use both and I like the staedtler much better because the tip lasts way longer and the feel of the pen and deepness of the black is of better quality in my opinion. Would love to see your take on watercolor brushes like the Tombow dual brush pens, Akashiya, Sakura, Kuretake ones :) not sure if the pentel brush pen falls in the same category? Anyway love this new segment and definitely looking forward to more showdowns 😊
AmandaRachLee Loved this new idea. Next, I'm thinking paper. Something on the lines of GSM levels and how the different types affect your artwork. I can never decide which to buy.
what about how quickly the nib flattens/breaks down? That's one of the big issues I have with these fineliners. LePen is worst for that, IMO, but I'm not sure about the rest.
pantalaimon1982 Of the disposable variety, PITT pens last the longest. But the SP Copics (metal barrel) have replaceable nibs that save you money in the long run. (Advice from a lil Blick employee)
Le pen also ages really poorly. My entire bullet journal (because I use it for outlining) has turned this rusty orange color over time :( so sad because this is my first one and I didn't know that it aged so bad!
kai la spina Oh that's rough 😕 You have to look for pens that are acid-free/archival or they'll do that over time. Another reason why I love the PITT pens and Copic Multiliners.
Thanks. I doubt I would replace the nib or refill the copic (pure laziness), so I don't know if Copic is worth the investment. I do like my Pitt pen, but I have found that I've worn the nib on it a little, same with my pigma micron. I haven't had an issue with the Staedlers, which are my current favorite, but that might be because I am going back and forth between different pens in the 6 pack. When I used one of my Staedlers extensively, I really wore down the nib. I think I just write too hard!
Ooh, yes, I love the ink colors and price of the LePen, but the nib wears out so fast. Had no idea the ink does that over time. Glad I haven't been using them extensively.
Please do the next stationary showdown on White Out !!!! I can never find the right one. Should It be liquid, tape version, expensive? Cheap?? Who knows! Please do a white out version!!
Tbh I don't really use correction liquid or something like that, our teacher told use that if you basically train yourself to not to do any spelling mistakes, you won't need it
meshary alabdulla sometimes you just get in the habit of writing a certain set of letters in a row. you can't train yourself out of that, otherwise you wouldn't write other words with that letter pattern. 😊 you can't train yourself to completely avoid mistakes. that's why they're called mistakes, they're accidental.
Jewel Skye I mean you're right, but what I wanna say is that people can avoid making mistakes by writing a lot of different words or sentences, and the good thing is that we are respecting each other's opinion 😊
I did a lot of bullet journaling with the stabile 88 pens, and while they might seem like a great value at the beginning, after a few weeks (latest) of using them the tip really quickly becomes much thicker as it bends and you cannot write as small letters as you might want to and the colour also becomes much more grey tinted with that, so for a lasting writing experience with stabilos really I've had to replace them every month or so. just thought I'd let you know!
I use a lot of stabilo 88 pens for the same purpose and I don't share your experiences. I haven't had the problem with the tip getting bigger at all. Maybe it depends on the writing style and how much pressure you apply to the pen tip. I also haven't observed that the colour becomes grey tinted after time. (However, the pens are definitively able to absorb other colours, used that with ink in high school, that might be the cause) Edit: Also I use them mostly for writing, not drawing.
When I was a really young child I got a stabilo fineliner for Christmas as I loved manga. It lasted for years and I was really happy about it. Now I use the Sakura ones and I'm chuffed, but the stabilo is a good one to start
Great idea! Are there any difference in the blackness of these pens? For some reason I want my pens to be super black and my favourite for that reason is the Uniball eye (not a fine liner but a roller ball).
One thing I've noticed with the faber-castell fine liners is that the color fades really quickly. Especially if you've drawn with pencil and erase it after inking your piece. The sakura and copic fine liners which I also use a lot keep their color wayyyy better even if you erase the pencil lines underneath your inking.
DO BLACK PENS NEXTTT!! coz im really having trouble choosing between pens like pilot juice, zebra sarasa, pentel energel, pilot g2, uniball signo dx, muji and other black pens
Jasmin Vallejo you don’t need Amanda to compare it because let’s be real she probably has different black pens then you do so u could just compare all the ones yourself by running them on alcohol markers , watercolour and also checking if they are opaque
I can't believe you went through this fineliner roundup without trying the Uni Pin fineliner. One of the best pens I've owned. Fast drying, no feathering, almost zero bleed through on cheap semi-decent paper. Sakura microns also have this red dye when you put watercolor on it right away and the Uni Pin doesn't have said red dye.
Dear Amanda, Thank you for the video! I thought I'd share my experience with one of them. I'm using staedler pigment liners and one thing I noticed is that they hold up extremely well against water xD. I had a sketchbook once that was completely soaked by the rain, and all the drawings I made with the staedler pigment were all preserved, while all the other drawings done by other fineliners became big blobs of blues and purples. I then had an idea for another stationary showdown. I would love to see tests on markers. I'm using promarkers myself, which are markers that try to recreate the effect of watercolor. But I know that they bleed through the page quite easily. However, they are excellent if you want to color an area without seeing the 'stripes' of the marker.
Damn I've always used steadler pigment pens and this video made me rethink to get Sakura, but pigment is a lot more cheaper where I live ($2) so I might just stick to it
SmollAnger I have both and in my opinion staedler actually smudges less and is smoother, but maybe that's because I use them differently or on different paper?
Love Food hm, possibly. My paper isn't fancy and most of the times any kind of pen or lines actually punctuates it... or I'm just fucking clumpsy (prob that tbh)
SmollAnger hahaha maybe XD but Im clumsy too, which is why I prefer using staedler, because "me+clumsy+staedler= no smudge yay" and "me+clumsy+micron=waahh smudges everywhere" (I don't even know what paper I use, I just have some random paper)
I personally LOVE Copic SP and Copic Multiliners. They are amazing! In my opinion you definitely get what you pay for! But if the price is too high for you Pigma Micron pens are great aswell!
Amanda Rach Lee there are mild liners similar to the zebra mild liners and they're called milky mild liners by Whiteman, I believe. You can find them mostly at daiso but I was wondering if you could compare them? Thank youuuu
Thank you!!! I love the Pigma microns, the only problem I noticed is that the 005 size which I really like- the point tends to break or fray or something. This has happened twice. I may bear down a little too hard, and I will say one time I was drawing along the edge of a really thin straight edge, which may have ruined it.
Hello Amanda, what about how long the nubs last with different pens? I've had a Copic Multiliner .25 and haven't really "worn it out", but the nub seemed to go kind of flat sooner than I ever expected it to. Just wondering if you've tested that aspect (since it was your favorite overall) but that of course would take more time to see how long the nub lasts. Thanks!
My favorite fineliners are the Kuretake Zig Cartoonists. Their ink is even darker than microns and copic, but they also don’t bleed and dry quickly. Would’ve loved to see how they hold up in this review. Ah, well.
I just wanted to note something about the Topic Multiliner- it's meant for professional art and illustrations so you're technically supposed to let it sit for a few minutes so that it doesn't smudge. Not trying to be rude, just thought I'd note this.
Katie Brady Lol, she actually said in one of her videos that she just uses the Copic one when tracing the pencils of her drawing and not for journaling... I'm pretty sure she knows it! And btw, this is a fineliner showdown, and she's just being fair for competing it all!
@@pleasehajima2587 at this price it should smudge at all, even if it is for "journaling", would have been interesting if she would have showcased the other Copic Multiliners

Great info---but why no mention of the paper quality??? PQ has a great deal to do with how well writing implements behave. The best pen in the world will feather and bleed through low-grade paper and the same pen will have varying results with different paper weights and textures
Amazing quality. I like how you went through so many different tests and visually presented them to us. Thanks! I think I am going to go with the Sakura micron and Copic Marker :)
I'm thinking of getting a sakura sigma micron. I do have one question for some one who has this, does the ink fade if rubbed with an eraser? I get that problem alot with my fineliners. Thanks
You are my biggest inspiration when it comes to my BUJO, I literally started Bullet Journaling because of you. I've always kept a regular lined journal and have about 30+ of them filled, but Bujo-ing (is that even a word? Lol probably not...) is so much fun, and I'm not artist but I love learning new techniques and doodles from your videos. I have decent cursive but I'm learning to hand letter by watching you, and I'm terrible at drawing so I draw inspo from you. Thanks for making awesome content, I get legit so excited each and everytime you post a new video
Really excellent video...love Stabilo as they are perfect for note taking on smooth surface papers found in textbooks. I thought Pilot gel pens were good until I tried fineliners and have never looked back since for all my notetaking endeavors as they write without smudging on nearly all types of papers and dry instantly.
Thank you for this video Amanda, I was hoping if you know what liner is the best to work with copic markers? I know copic liner is made for that of course but I am not able to find those in my country. Thanks for help!
the refills for the copic multiliner sp costs as much as a regular fineliner. They are just a waste of money, unless you really want the shiny barrel that much. and i say this as someone who has at least 1 fineliner of every brand on earth, copic sp was a huge disappointment. what's worse, the tip for the finer ones (0.005 and 0.1) are very scratchy and brittle, which isn't the case with the uni pin or zig mangaka.
My copic fineliners I actually really enjoy. They work well for lining but they are rather annoying with erasing graphite after doing lineart. Though that isn't a issue with how I've begun to do my lineart. However, I see your opinion and agree I wouldn't buy them again due to their price and how I can get the same product for cheaper.
I usually use the Staedtler ones, but they take a bit of getting used to them. I also like the Copic ones since you can‘t only refill them but also change the tips in case you break them on accident!
Fantastic video, now I know which ones to buy! But I just have a question about how you store your fineliners? I don't want to store them so ink leaks or dries out..
I think that a DRYNESS test would have been in order. For example, I've used that Sharpie pen, and have found that it runs out of ink and goes dry in just a matter of seconds of use.
yeah same for me, i'm here because i had two fine point sharpies and they both dried out in less than a full drawing, it was only an a4 piece of pape :(
I got the twelve pack of pilot fine liners and the are really smooth in my opinion. There not really smooth but the not rough, but in my opinion the are smooth.(if that makes sense)
When it comes to advanced artist using inking pens for the first time Fabra Castel is the best, They last for a VERY long time, I have been drawing with the same pen for 2 years and it is still going strong 😋
The video was helpful. You could try doing a water resistance test. I was once doing some urban sketch with stabilo fine liner. And suddenly a few raindrops poured and there were big flecks on my sketch, it had also bled through. I’m currently looking for a cheap yet water resistant fine liner, which will come handy for sudden water color usage or the times the nature might cry over my sketch again.
Other downside to the stabilo though: the felt tip wears down real fast. Also the copic fineliner....I dunno what the refills cost where you buy refills but for me I wouldn't save anything in the long run....the refills are $3.00 a pop!!!
for anyone thinking about buying the stabilo pen they should know that after time the ink fades as in not off the page but i have a stabilo pen i bought in the spring and when i use it now it looks more gray than black :/ good price tho so not like you can't buy a new one; just frustrating!
Perhaps you bought one of the erasable ones by mistake. There are black, blue, red, and green erasable pens; all of which fade over the course of 1-2 semesters if exposed to UV light. They have one additional perk though, as the bleed less.
Thank you for this. I'll try a few triplus colours as well . I don't know if the info is available but value for money would also depend on ink quantity.
Thank you this is a fantastic complete review however I do wish you had included the Tombow Mono drawing Pen. Those are my favorite along with the sakura and I would have liked to see how they compare to the others. Wondering if you have tried them or if you have an updated video of this review including more pens? I will try to check, but if somebody knows I will appreciate a link since she has so many videos.
this is very helpful, one thing i would suggest (which is subjective) is the feel of the pen/nib, does it provide the right amount of drag for writing/lining. i have microns and sharpie pen, while the microns are better (archival ink, smudging etc) the 'feel' of writing with the sharpie is much nicer, it provides just the right amount of friction for lining. pigment is another important test that can be added, though we can see pretty clearly from the scribble test. what does it look like after it's dry, how black is the pigment (microns kind of look faded with only one pass, unless you are using their thicker graphic pens.) another one, for over time is how quickly the nib gets 'destroyed' from regular use. it looked like the staedtler one gets ruined pretty quickly which is disappointing for the price. overall this review was fantastic, thank you very much for this detailed, concise review!!
I am so happy about to take the time watching this.. You definitly compared them in some of the most important questions whenever it´s about to take a choice. Three of them are just right here.. not because of this video.. It´s just because these pencils just will do whatever you have got burrowed in your mind ;)
Wow, when it comes to smoothness, I cannot disagree more. My staedtler pigment liner is far smoother than my Sakura micron. Also, the sakura micron has a lot more of ink flow, which sometimes messes up the page. I think you might have gotten a faulty pigment liner...
I use the Staedtler triplus (black and colors) and haven't really had problems. The showing through or "ghosting" as you put it doesn't bother me and I haven't had any actual bleeding. My biggest problem is the slight smudging from going to erase my pencil marks I put down before I use the pens, but again it doesn't bother me too much.
One problem I have is that Sharpie Pens are actually permanent markers, not fineliners. They have a seperate fineliner line, but that's not really popular. Of course a permanent marker writes terribly on paper. But no one talks about this. Clever marketing on the part of Sharpie? I dont know.
This video was so helpful! + incredible editing!!

Thanks
Not as much as some other pens x
This was seriously one of the most useful things I have ever seen on RUclips. I love this series ^^
Ahhh yes!!!! My Faber Castles were a worth gift!!!! Thank you Zoooooeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I literally use all of your top three and I was pleasantly surprised to see them “win”!!
Thanks, this was very helpful!! I think i’m gonna go with a Sakura...? :D
Copic fineliners are mainly used for drawing, and they work really well with copic markers.
Ella i like toast like a lot same brand duh
My copic fineliners I actually really enjoy. They work well for lining but they are rather annoying with erasing graphite after doing lineart. Though that isn't a issue with how I've begun to do my lineart. However, I see your opinion and agree I wouldn't buy them again due to their price and how I can get the same product for cheaper.
She looks soooo elegant in the intro and her makeup’s natural PRETTY!
Roses are red, violets are blue Rachel has helped me a lot and she should help you too
Your Mom thanks mom !
This is amanda Rach lee
Who's Rachel?
Faber Castell and Disposable Copic Multiliner for art, Staedtler triplus for notes. Those have always been my fave pens
ive never been so early lol i love the series so far ill be waiting for the next one!!
This is one of the best analysis Amanda, great effort and very useful - thanks
The stabilo is my favorite :D
Which/what fineliner is best excusively for handwriting? I bought some cheap 0.4mm fineliners and have been hooked ever since. Thank you.
I think that a DRYNESS test would have been in order. For example, I've used that Sharpie pen, and have found that it runs out of ink and goes dry in just a matter of seconds of use.
What?! I have had mine for years and they still work!
yeah same for me, i'm here because i had two fine point sharpies and they both dried out in less than a full drawing, it was only an a4 piece of pape :(
I love these stationary showdown videos! Even though I've only seen two of them... but they are how I found this channel!
My favorite one is the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner. :)
I love all these brands and this video really helps me decide which pen to use for what. Thank you so much.
you should try erasable pens! :)
I could watch these every month. Great video!
I got the twelve pack of pilot fine liners and the are really smooth in my opinion. There not really smooth but the not rough, but in my opinion the are smooth.(if that makes sense)
Stabilo Point 88 Fineliner is the BESTTT!! 🙌 Hands down my favorite out of all. High quality despite its inexpensive price.
I’m currently looking for a cheap yet water resistant fine liner, which will come handy for sudden water color usage or the times the nature might cry over my sketch again.
well they ARE water based inks, many people, me included, use them with watercolor just because of this
sakura is the best
But. Sakura is like the worst in team 7
@@13gangyoungin16 But she better than hInAtA
The ink erases when you erase over it, and that's a huge thing for me.
I like Copic Multiliners better.
Minh Béo yeah right, hinata isn’t dead weight like sakura (buut sakura is way cooler)
Erin Harrell copics are more expensive tho, I feel like you get more bang for your buck with microns but I really love both
Which fine liner is best for extensive writing like letters and such
It would be nice if you had compared how dark the ink is.
Don’t you mean opacity
@@abeeragulkhattak25 No, I mean the darkness of the pigment.
@@31leoceara yeah I know thats called opacity
@@abeeragulkhattak25 It's called pigment darkness. No relation to opacity whatsoever.
@@31leoceara oh sorry ok
How long does the sakura pen last? I didn't know if I should buy the Winsor newton fineliner though.
Other downside to the stabilo though: the felt tip wears down real fast.
Also the copic fineliner....I dunno what the refills cost where you buy refills but for me I wouldn't save anything in the long run....the refills are $3.00 a pop!!!
It's so funny because I use those Steadtler Pigment liners all the time and I LOVE them! I've used them for a couple of years now.
for anyone thinking about buying the stabilo pen they should know that after time the ink fades as in not off the page but i have a stabilo pen i bought in the spring and when i use it now it looks more gray than black :/ good price tho so not like you can't buy a new one; just frustrating!
i have one, i bought it last year (i forgot where i put it and found it 3 days ago) and the ink is fine. Maybe you bought a damaged one.
it worked perfectly at the beginning and faded overtime as i wrote with it daily. maybe you didn't write with it as often as i did
Yeah I noticed that too, but I don't really mind because it's such a cheap & good fineliner
I write with the stabilo pens for a couple of years now and it never happened that they faded, even after 2 or 3 years - the color is the same.
Perhaps you bought one of the erasable ones by mistake. There are black, blue, red, and green erasable pens; all of which fade over the course of 1-2 semesters if exposed to UV light. They have one additional perk though, as the bleed less.
Finally!! someone who makes a rlly good bleeding test !!! THANK YOU!
Hey Amanda can you make a stationary showdown video about coloured pencils?
true black would be a good comparison too..staetler, stabilo, pilot and le pen look the best for these
battle of journals 📓 plsss
Julianna Louisa she has already done ☝🏻
Thank you for this. I'll try a few triplus colours as well
. I don't know if the info is available but value for money would also depend on ink quantity.
I really loved this! U should do more :)
What bullet journal do you use? Trying to get started on journaling!!
Omg I actually have the Micron pen. I just thought it was a normal pen lol XD
🤦
Thank you this is a fantastic complete review however I do wish you had included the Tombow Mono drawing Pen. Those are my favorite along with the sakura and I would have liked to see how they compare to the others. Wondering if you have tried them or if you have an updated video of this review including more pens? I will try to check, but if somebody knows I will appreciate a link since she has so many videos.
MARKERS!
Megan Yap Don’t use the Staedler with markers. I have learned the hard way that they are alcohol based and bleed with alcohol markers.
this is very helpful, one thing i would suggest (which is subjective) is the feel of the pen/nib, does it provide the right amount of drag for writing/lining. i have microns and sharpie pen, while the microns are better (archival ink, smudging etc) the 'feel' of writing with the sharpie is much nicer, it provides just the right amount of friction for lining.
pigment is another important test that can be added, though we can see pretty clearly from the scribble test. what does it look like after it's dry, how black is the pigment (microns kind of look faded with only one pass, unless you are using their thicker graphic pens.)
another one, for over time is how quickly the nib gets 'destroyed' from regular use. it looked like the staedtler one gets ruined pretty quickly which is disappointing for the price.
overall this review was fantastic, thank you very much for this detailed, concise review!!
Heh, I feel smug now with my set of Stabilos.
I am so happy about to take the time watching this.. You definitly compared them in some of the most important questions whenever it´s about to take a choice. Three of them are just right here.. not because of this video.. It´s just because these pencils just will do whatever you have got burrowed in your mind ;)
My fav is Micron!
Have you compared ballpoints or jell 🖊? Thank you for the comparisons!
Wow, when it comes to smoothness, I cannot disagree more. My staedtler pigment liner is far smoother than my Sakura micron. Also, the sakura micron has a lot more of ink flow, which sometimes messes up the page. I think you might have gotten a faulty pigment liner...
Betina Juchem Clemens I agree!
I'm using Uni-Pin Fineliners at the moment and I'll probably buy them again. I like them a lot.
So happy that the stabilo won, because I have multiple of those 😂
mariekejee18 but stabilo didn't win...?
Hello, very helpful, can you advise which of these are permanent makers ?
When she said ghosting I thought she meant when girls leave me on read
Great video and very informative. What do you think of Schneider topliner 967 pens?
I will give a Pen suggestion Like Dong-A Hexaplus It's Good too! 💙It's in the Philippines 🇵🇭
i can't find Dong-A hexaplus in most NBS around fairview!
Awesome showdown. All the winners are my favs.
In my country the Coptic multiliner have the price much more lower 😂 3$ per 1
p e a c h y i m. Where do live ?
En puerto rico they cost $2.70
Thank you so much for the guide😊😊😊❤️❤️❤️ it's really helpful for people such as me who are still new at art, anyway thanks again
