- "Isn't that volley too high and too slow? Won't my opponent just crush me on the next shot?"
This is a common question I get from pickleball players when I coach them on how to hit their volleys...
It's a fair question and I can see why they might think that. So am I'm a giving them bad volley advice that will only get them crushed in games?

Love that you are helping people understand progressions ~ that’s what good teachers do!!
Thank you!
I love your videos! You are very well spoken and easy to follow. The flow of your lessons is on point! Thank you!!
Thank you so much!
Your video is exactly what I needed at this point in my learning journey. The block volley is my struggle currently. I'll practice with a wall as you demonstrated because *nobody* in my social circle will do practice drills.
Agreed. Seems like very few people who rec. play want to drill.
Awesome! Way to make it happen!
This is generally true.
This is one of the reasons I love playing pickleball, for the fast action adrenaline pumping in the moment shots. it's fun to watch other people play like this also. Thanks for the good video 🏓
Couldn't agree more!
Helps with eye hand coordination and reflexes. These are trainable things. Some people have better athletic skills and will learn quicker that others. But this drill will let you know where you are at in the skill level necessary for higher level play. Thanks for the information. Rick D.
Great points! Totally agree. Thanks for the comment.
Excellent nuanced distinctions Nicole...
Thank you!
Yep! Drills are a stepping stone. Ya gotta crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run!
🙌
As a beginner, some videos are overwhelming and discouraging primarily because of my skill gap. Still at baby steps and a lot of videos are marathoners. Seeing the road to a particular skill is helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! You got this!
Try watching older videos, they are very informative
I like slower volley drills and use them from time to time. They enable me to focus and tune details that are harder tune at higher speeds. For example: getting back to ready position after every volley, including hand position, foot position and balance; focusing on watching the ball strike the paddle and adjusting so that contact is as close to the center of the sweet spot as possible; and drilling patterns like forehand-forehand-backhand-backhand-forehand-... which works on placement. These all work with a wall too, of course.
On the other hand, is there anything wrong with doing hard volleys even if there's only a handful of hits before someone misses?
Hi Bret! I love that you slow down to focus on cleaning up very specific things. As far as the high speed...if you can keep it going for 3 hits each so 6 total then you can work there but you'll be chasing balls a lot and it's gonna be pretty hard on your psyche. If that's ok for you then go for it but I don't recommend it. I'd like the average rally to be at a higher ball count. Maybe at least 5 contacts each or so at minimum.
I am learning what you have been saying. All shots need to be " fine tuned" as you get better and play better players.
Yes, you need to lay a SOLID foundation and tune from there. Thanks for the comment!
Great video Nicole...thank you! Another analogy to this that most people already know is, "wax on, wax off"
Great point!
Well done....makes perfect sense!
Awesome!
Good stuff. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I don't have a drilling partner, but I have a Titan ball machine that I use to practice volley. I guess something is better than nothing.
yes it can be challenging to find a partner at times but i definitely thing a ball machine is a good alternative
Great video!
I have been doing volley wall drills for a while now. I can now actually do backhand volleys; I did 100 in a row today!!! It may have not looked all that pretty at times, but I am progressing. Not too long ago I couldn't even do backhand volleys even three in a row. Today was a watershed moment. NICOLE IS RIGHT, it is a journey. Take your time and have fun out there.
Glad you enjoyed it!
OMG! Thank you for dropping this comment. This made my day, love to hear about the progress and the willingness to grind for it. Nicely done!
