    James, if your looking for ideas for your next walking robot, base it's outer shell on Twiki from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century -- Your current leg design on Gonk would fit into Twiki's body frame very easily -- You would also have the added bonus of being the first one to build an actual walking one -- Great videos as always --

    I agree that the current droid is at the edge of working. I really like the new plan. I have been tinkering with the ideal of a two ram system. In principle its a very simple design. My issue is building it for a reasonable cost and size.
    Drill and lead screw is the only way i see it working. It will be fun seeing how you approach it.

    Love the new Gonk sounds, this little guy seems complete, it's a bit unnerving to see it walking by itself as I've never seen an actual robotic Gonk before, seems alive,
    As for the new project, I look forward to the build,
    There are so many Robots out there that I'd love to see you make, The silent running droids, black hole droids, C3PO of course, but the original Marvin from Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy would be perfect 😃👍

    Great job mate, That is a load of work. If you do a push pull joint with two motors it may be hard to load share, especially with lead screws as they don't back drive well. I was thinking you could put a current sensor on each motor, then you could balance the currents during motion.
    A note on brushless DC. While they are a pain to drive. You do get electrical gearing out of them so you need less motor gearing. This will help the backlash. I always wanted a brushless servo "module" and I did make one but never mass produced them.

    +James Bruton Perhaps you could print some shoe soles out of NinjaFlex and attach those to the bottom of the robotic feet. It would hopefully provide additional traction for the feet, as well as being able to lessen the stress and impact to the overall robot by providing some cushion with each step.

  • @tiporari

    I like the reusable chassis idea.
    Do you have an Angle Grinder? Its just about the most useful tool for basic metalworking. With a cutoff wheel you can easily cut rod, extrusions, plate and sheet metal.
    You can grind flats (square or hex) on your 12m rod so it will fit in the drill chuck. Simple and positive engagement.
    Safety glasses and caution a must.

    hello that is a very nice idea to use drill motor that is my first idea i hope see fast thank you for your post

  • @mattesmaschmeier
    @mattesmaschmeier 7 лет назад +1

    Hey James, try upgrading your drill Motors with Mabuchi rs-550 vc 6060 12v motors, I have used them myself, they are compatible with the cheap planetary Gearbox of most cordless drills, you only have to knock the Pinion/Gear off your old motor with a Bolt or a screwdriver (old motor will be damaged in the process) and carefully press them on the axle of the Mabuchi motors. (I used a vice and blocked the back where the axle comes out of the motor with a Bolt to prevent damage to the motor.) The Mabuchi motors are way more powerful and are used in Powerwheels (the electric cars for kids).
    Here in Germany they cost 8€ a piece but I think you can get them cheaper.
    I used them for a Robot that weighed around ten kilos an was moved by two 20cm Wheels, the Motors are Overkill and did a burnot every time I gave them power without a regulator. By the way, these motors spin slower than the cheap ones but are high torque and run cooler.
    But try your drill motors (before you consider changing to Mabuchis) they are also good and may be better suited for the screw because they turn faster.

    Although it would take a lot of work, the robot's performance could be greatly improved if it could detect the gradient of the floor so that it could automatically adjust itself in order to walk in a straight line. Considering the show floor for the robot would be practically flat though, this might be unnecessary.
    Seeing what is involved in making even a rudimentary walking robot makes me appreciate the abilities of legged creatures far more than I otherwise would have. Even the simplest of organisms seem so complex compared to our machines.

    Make a grinder lathe with wood or 3D printing to reduce the diameter of the lead screws and add 3 flats. Or see if a drill bit sharpening place would do it.

    • @david929190
      @david929190 7 лет назад

      A grinder would make it possible, if your concerned watch Matthias Wandel's video on making a wood lathe. Or just have a tool sharpening place do it, they could grind the shaft same as any drill shank.
