This is my favourite thing Taylor and Jack Antonoff have done together. He has a very distinctive style and Getaway Car, Cruel Summer and this one all have aspects, but this one is my fave. It's also one of the most 'pop' type songs on this album imo, especially in her vocal!

One thing I love about this song is that there's none of the tropey "other woman" aggression that's seen in many other woman songs. This woman is a person, she's not this awful bitch., you know? You really feel for her. Great song writing to be able to convey that 👌👏
Well she's more like a girl than a woman. She's so young. Never has she ever (had sex) before... the love triangle took place in high school in the song Betty.
I liked your reaction, this is one of the song about the love triangle, the other are Betty and Cardigan; you should listen to all three in row.
August is from the lover’s perspective, Betty is from James’s perspective and Cardigan is Betty’s perspective.

It may be odd, but this song makes me smile. I'm an old now, but I remember feeling so damn hopeful about every love interest when I was younger. If you can, check out the Long Pond sessions. She talks beautifully about how the third point in a love triangle is usually not a villian. They've fallen and hope they'll be chosen. Especially in youth, when no one's seriously committed for the long haul of life yet.
And frankly, the person who committed to someone else and indulgences in a dalliance is the one in the wrong. (Caveat: when you're a teenager, don't tie yourself down, loves. You have so much life to live.)

If you're interested, there are articles online about the music behind this track (and a couple more songs). It was a mystery project given to Sound House Studios in Lakeland and they had no idea it was for a Taylor Swift album until moments before it was released. The guy said he was almost in tears when he heard august for the first time.
