- Today we’re gonna talk about the Void Trilogy which is part of the Commonwealth Saga by Peter F Hamilton. I really like the Commonwealth Saga for a few reasons, for one, I’m generally a sucker for space operas. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of human colonization of space and what mysteries we could encounter there, you can probably tell that from looking at my channel. I also love the way the series pays homage to classic authors like Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, and even Larry Niven. The Void Trilogy is particularly awesome because it starts off with a great mystery, who constructed the void, why, and what is inside of it? Now before we go any further I must warn you, if you have not read the Commonwealth Saga don’t watch this video if you care about spoilers because I will be discussing some of the major plot developments.

The Quinn's Effect: When a sentient and able-to-read lifeform hears Quinn's Ideas review of a previously unknown SF saga, the said lifeform is greatly inclined to read the said saga.
Indeed the flesh and the Quinn's Call is quite predictable
What are you talking about
Very true. It’s how I found the three body problem.
Tbh it was this exact thing for me with Three Body Problem. I watched 5 minutes of his review, stoped to listen to all 3 books, came back and finished the video.
I know that effect.
One thing I enjoy about Hamilton's books is he generally has an optimistic view of the future. In most post-scarcity societies it's a dystopia pretending to be a Utopia, but the Commonwealth is honestly somewhere I would like to live.
Really? You don't think he has a rather cynical right wing view of the future of the human race?
@@andypitchless5515 To me, the first books of the Commonwealth are fairly bleak in mainstream CW life (particularly all the people desperately saving for rejuvenation, so they can go through it all again once they are younger again?) but it does seem to be better by these books (1000 years later so I guess they had plenty of time to work on a fairer society!). The think is, capitalism doesn't really make sense in a post-scarcity society, but I have never seen the Commonwealth as post-scarcity. If I could choose any future society I'd join the Culture tomorrow.
@@BananaArmsMcNess I agree, the Culture is by far the most interesting society and one I'd prefer to live in. I'm just hoping that Special Circumstances has a position or two open.
@@andypitchless5515 the first 2 (5?) are explicitly a capitalist dystopia. People work for decades and literally burn out their bodies only to be refurbished then spend that lifetime of wealth doing what they *actually* want to do.
But by the end of the chronicle of the fallers it's stated that they've moved past material hoarding, and instead focus on individual self growth.
Loved the Commonwealth books. I read them before any of the Void books existed. The opening scene when the wormhole was first deployed when Ozzie was in college... great scene.
I love the Commonwealth Saga. It's among the most convincing futures where technology has made society so completely different while humans remain essentially human.
I've read a lot of Hamilton. Great stuff. From Reality Dysfunction series to post-void isolation. Thanks for your videos that rekindle the love for these and other sci fi classics. I'm glad I'm not the only one that was moved by The Three Body Problem..
I love the night's dawn trilogy👍✊
Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga IS my favorite modern scifi series, and I enjoy getting back to periodically. I absolutely love the unique alien races the author spins up and often doesn't over explain, almost as if he wants his readers to let their imaginations run wild. Also, I think the Primes might be my favorite "bad-guy" alien species.
Man I love The Commonwealth Series... already read them all twice, now you're tempting me for a third revisit.
I've read the Void series, but I actually prefer the Commonwealth during the wormhole era...it just seemed more real to me.
Maybe the further into our future the fictions flow, the more speculative it becomes and therefore less realistic. It would also become less familiar whether it's tru or not
Dude, your videos are the only vids that I'll hit the like button BEFORE I watch it. Because you deliver great content, without fail, every time. I'm never disappointed. This has got to be your calling. Keep it up!
Yup I do exactly the same. Every time!
The commonwealth saga is one of my favourite series. So happy to see you covering it :D
When I recommended you should check out the commonwealth saga by Peter F Hamilton, never in a million years did I think you would actually do it. This is going to be amazing! So excited! Kind of surprised you started with the void first though as Pandora’s Star and Judas Unchained takes place over a 1000 years in advance and are equally as interesting and important. The void is such an amazing series though because it’s basically two books in one with each book. Starting the video now! Thanks as always for your outstanding work.
EDIT: Corrected some spelling errors above. Also, put out an idea that I’ve been working on for a few years as a casual hobby in the comments below. Kind of an annoying long message, but now that Quinn is talking about this series I thought I would throw the idea out to his fans. I’ve been obsessed with the Commonwealth saga for so long now and I’ve read it numerous times, so this is a big deal to me that others are as interested. Dune and Commonwealth are literally my favorite sci-fi books and always have been even though I read a new sci-fi book every month or two.
100% this. They’re a good intro to the universe of the commonwealth
Agreed, just by themselves Pandora’s Star and Judas Unchained are absolutely incredible. I was hoping Quinn would start with them but I assume he’ll dig into that eventually. Then the Confederation Universe is there too, so much good content with Peter F Hamilton.
THIS THIS THIS we need a Morninglightmountain episode
Is that the same guys who wrote Salvation? I ask because that book is a near blatant rip-off of Hyperion and not nearly as good. I ended my read through of the series because of that book
@@hunterkincaid4972 yes, same author as Salvation Series which is definitely on the bottom of the list of his work to me. It wasn’t terrible but I agree with you, definitely some inspiration from Hyperion. His grand works with the Commonwealth and Confederation are my favorites, I just love the sweeping Space Opera like Quinn said in the video.
Quinn, you are the most awesome! You are my go to when it comes to sci-fi breakdowns. You, personally, have introduced me to some of the best literature I've ever read! THANK YOU!
The Void Trilogy is good, as are the previous two books of the Commonwealth Saga. Peter F Hamilton is great at world building and coming up with interesting plots. I feel his work suffers from relatively weak endings though. Still one of my favorite authors. Its just more about the setting and the journey than the destination with his books.
I can't believe I never found this series till now! Pro-socialist sci-fi is a rare gem and I'm loving it so far.
Funnily enough i only read the void abd didn't know two other books existed
@@trashpanda6885 The commonwealth saga is not really pro socialist, the society is deeply capitalist... but the author is showing the strengths and weaknesses of such a system. His socialist protagonists (mainly Adam Elvin) are not really the heroes, but they are very relatable.
His endings always fall flat to me but I am so drawn in by his storytelling I don't even mind.
Just wanted to say your the man Quinn! Ive recently found your channel and ive been bingeing all your videos for the past week and you've made a fan for life! Thanks so much for continuing to put out content you have a unique mind and your a great storyteller!
Oh how I love these books. Paula Myo is still one of my favorite characters.
I love that you're talking about the Commonwealth Saga! It's so creative and one of my favorite sci-fi series. Please do more videos on this series!
I listened to all of his novel series. Not the stand alone stories yet though.
I really recommend it to everyone! Even the new series: Arkship Trilogy!
All series are absolute masterpieces.
What I also really recommend if you like this style is Iain M. Banks and his Culture-Series.
Awesome work as always Quinn! 🙂
Keep up the great work! Cheers from Sweden 🤘🐺🤍
I like the atmospheric background. Never noticed it before, if it was there.
While I did love this series, The Reality Dysfunction Series will always hold a place in my heart. The story is so expansive , encompassing so many 'levels' of society and all during an age of exploration. Right up my alley!
Love your content! You don’t miss man I’ve enjoyed all your recommendations and can’t thank you enough!
I really enjoy your channel. I rarely have time in my busy life these days to read sci-fi and I found your channel still allows me to explore an interest I don't really have time for these days.
Hey Quinn, just want to say this is one of the best channels on YT. Thanks for the high quality content.
These were the Hamilton books I read most recently! Great read, but I think that the Reality Dysfunction is still my absolute favorite.
That book just draws you in so effortlessly doesnt it. And right from the beginning too. I never felt there was a point further into it where i thought ah now its starting to get going. It was intriguing from the get go.
Quinn Dexter was something else, straight out of a Stephen King book
I agree, reality dysfunction slapped me in the face on page 1 and I couldn’t put it down till I finished the trilogy. It had laugh out loud moments and some of the most terrified moments I’ve ever had. Never expected a space opera to scare the shit out of me. The Iain Banks book excession also had page 1 starting at 11.
I wish I could go back and read all their books again for the first time. Anyone here who likes these books read ‘the three body problem’ and recommend it?
Your channel is severely underrated. It's delightful to hear about all of these unique Sci-Fi settings I had honestly never heard of!
I’m a big fan of Hamilton’s work. It’s a good blend of high concept scifi and solid character writing.
I dont normally read books but these type of galactic stories really spark my interest. You do an amazing job of story telling and setting the ambiance of your video's. Great job man! 😎👍
I also love space opera. Your book discussions help me relive en reevaluate some of the great sci-fi-stories I’ve read. and now you’ve gone and pivoted to Peter F Hamilton. My Night’s Dawn paperback are falling apart from all the intense and joyful reading. And I also really likes the Void Trilogy. Looking forward to your next discussions!
Thanks Quinn. I read the first 2 void books many years ago (before the 3rd was out) but I did love them and I know that because I can remember so much about them still. Dreaming about the void is like a fantasy experience, which weirdly, are the parts I didn't like as much when reading, but in fact are the parts that have stayed with me most.
Yours is the most interesting sci-fi YT Channel I’ve ever seen Quinn. Love your sci-fi novella breakdowns and interpretations! Keep up the great videos!
Your channel is such a good place to find new reads.
What an eloquent tale! Marvelous!
Please 😂 I watch your videos specifically to go into major plot details with you.🖤
I’m very happy to see you looking at Peter Hamilton’s body of work. It is not nearly as popular as it should be.
Definitely not enough love online for Hamilton, despite his sales numbers making him one of the top SF authors in the UK.
I mean he has a whole chapter about a furry orgy cruise.. I found most of the characters quite bland for the most part, the story jumps to so many people it's hard to keep track and the random sex scenes... Most for no particular reason to the point of making the whole Commonwealth saga into a soft core porn... I like the ideas and plot behind it all but god damn is a lot of his stuff very crude writing wise.
I'm glad you like it, but I can see why some like myself might find it a bit distasteful.
because he's a hack who can't write and finishes a trilogy with a literal deus ex machina.
@@nvcn86 It's not a classical deus ex machina. The anomine and what they accomplished was hinted at pretty early in the books, it was not a sudden revelation at the end. And the protagonists made it happen, it was not at all like a divine intervention out of nowhere.
I wasn't so enthused with the Void trilogy but I loved Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. There was something so cool and original about interstellar travel via train:)
The two books after the Void trilogy are much better. More Sci-fi and less fantasy.
Again you remind me why I like this channel so much. I have read the five main books of the Commonwealth saga I own but haven't yet read the two short story ones.
Considering how well The Three Body problem is doing on Netflix, I would love to see the Commonwealth Saga covered by Netflix in the same way, starting all the way at the beginning in Pandoras Star!
Due to your videos covering the Three Body Problem, I'm now reading the books, I'll probably go back and reread the whole Commonwealth Saga all over again.
Thanks for putting these videos together, it's renewing my interest in reading!
I've read the first two, and absolutely loved them. Didn't know there were more after. I'd love to see you do a video on Peter Hamilton's other works, especially Fallen Dragon. That was my introduction to him.
Fallen dragon was a cool book
A lot of neat ideas in there.
Reality Dysfunction honestly goes underappreciated. Such a unique take on Space Operas.
hat is that
OMG! I am so glad you are covering these books!!
Always a great day when u post! Keep up the great work👍👍🙏
Thanks for making videos about the Commonwealth saga. I absolutely adore this series, in particular the first two books.
Didn't watch the video, but read the description. Never heard of these books before, but downloaded straight away. Will read and then come back to watch the video.
I am so happy that I found this channel
I just finished the void trilogy yesterday. Perfect timing Quinn!
I love these videos you engross me in stories that I would otherwise have no idea about. Allowing me to escape reality and just sit and wonder of what could be. Thank you kind sir
Thanks for covering Hamilton! 🧡
Love you, Quinn :) You remind me so much of my best friend that passed away. You bring me comfort like no one else on this platform. (Sorry if that's weird to say. You know we all grieve different)
I appreciate your posts very much , thank you.
Oh i loveeee this series, hyped to see you do a video on it
The void series got be back into reading novels 20 years ago. Thanks for covering some P. Hamilton
Quinn! I've been a PFH fan for just over a decade. Pretty much my most favoritest-est-est writer. Started with Night's Dawn and thence to Commonwealth, and long since caught up to his current efforts. Love love love all 7 or 8 books in the series (Misspent Youth is up for debate as a prequel). I've seen them on your bookshelves but never thought you'd ever cover them, and now I wonder how messed up is YT's algorithm when this vid has been up for a month and I'm only now getting to the party? You have to cover the Prime. Pandora's Star/Judas Unchained is nothing short of harrowing.
you have read the nights dawn and then read something more by him? after a literal deus ex machina spitting in your face? damn...
I love all the different ways tech evolved in the series
Yessss one of my favourite youtubers covering one of my favourite authors 😄
Thanks Quinn I great appreciate your hard work!
Yet Another Incredible Video!!
Space Opera? That's an automatic add to my reading list!
The intro Looks incredebly good :))
This is the type of video where I would have to rewatch just to understand what I heard.
Actually, I have never even heard of these books and didn't mind the spoilers. You didn't give too many details to ruin it. I may actually have to see if I can't find these and give them a read. Thank you!! I love Sci-Fi Thriller/Fantasy. This would be right up my alley!
Outstanding video, keep up the great work! 👍
Another great thing about the Commonwealth Saga: Trains! In space! Holding together an interstellar polity linked by wormholes! Trains!
Just purchased Pandoras Star! Here we gooo! Great channel!
Quinn your channel is amazing bro. Your series on the Three Body Problem just blows my damn mind. I wish you only the best with growing your chamnel you deserve success.
Ive been wondering if you were going to dive into Hamilton's amazing works. The Reality Dysfunction is such a brilliant read. He really knows how to create a universe of detail in his books. Fantastic author.
Your videos always make me fall asleep (in a good way)
I'm really pleased to see you discussing Peter F. The Salvation Saga is an absolute must if you've not read it yet :)
It's been years since I've read the Void series of books and still have them. I remember really enjoying them. I also remember laughing unusually hard reading of Quatux's addiction to other sentient beings emotional states.
oh god, you told me to go read another book so i guess I'll just go have a new favorite scifi series again! jkjk, I've never had a bad time reading something you've recommended! Be back in 3 months once I've finished
Great work! More Peter F Hamilton videos please!
So stoked to see commonwealth content!
Peter F Hamilton is a top 3 sci fi author for me. Love you covering his books. He has so many good ones!
Another job well done 👌
Would love to see a video on the rest of the Commonwealth Saga!
I see very few videos of the commonwealth saga and even fewer of the Reality Dsyfunction. Would love to see some of the aspects such as Edenism and the beyond covered.
I just want more talk of Hamilton's books in general!
the mans back with another interesting story!
"Who constructed The Void? What's inside of it? What lies beyond?"
Lean up against one wall of your room. Turn your gaze out into the void. What do you see? That's right, you see the opposite wall of your room. A void is empty space, nothing more sinister than that. What's inside of it? Nothing, or almost nothing. (air is very thin compared to drywall.) What lies beyond? The opposite wall. Thanks for listening to my TED Talk.
Sigh, so many books I have missed. Thanks for such a succinct synopsis.
Brilliant idea to make the black hole at the center of the galaxy a major mystery box
I cant wait for more videos on this!!!!!!
Sweet I'm definitely gonna read this now. You haven't steered me wrong yet. I even stopped right at the spoiler warning which is something I usually don't mind but when it comes to a space mystery gotta keep it mysterious.
Just discovered this channel and love it
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pandora's Star and the Void Trilogy by Hamilton. The man is insanely good
Ahh finally the commonwealth :D
Love your channel bro! :)
Another great video!
Yeah, I read all of the book from the Void trilogy and it is one of my favourite SciFi series. I especially liked the idea of a human becoming a super powerful weapon system/entity by transforming into informationized (?! sorry, English isnt my first language) energy (last book).
Anyway, I read almost ALL SciFi books (200+) that have any relevance according to popular culture and I still think this is one of the most entertaining book series ever.
I loved the idea of the primes so much, they were so fucking cool and alien.
The Commonwealth Saga is one of favorites. A lot of really cool concepts about future technology. My favorite part was in book 2 when you start to learn more about the Prime aliens.
I'd forgotten so much about this series, but it was an amazing ride indeed.
I remember seeing the Void Trilogy and thinking it’d be good read. The only thing that stopped me picking it up is Peter’s writing.... Don’t get me wrong I absolutely *loved* the Commonwealth stories and the worlds he builds. But *man* he can drag on a bit with all the characters he puts in his stories. It’s why I haven’t finished “Great North Road.”
Happy to see Hamilton’s work on this channel. Love Dune and I know creators like their view count, but cmon, the dead horse hath been beaten, severely. This was a great refresher in the commonwealth saga. It brought up all kinds of pieces that I couldn’t quite remember. Anyway, hope to see more of the commonwealth saga here!
nobody on RUclips can get me to read all kinds of different Sci-fi/Fantasy books like Quinn does
Love your channel! Greetings from Warsaw
"he's the water walker!" best ending to the beginning of a series ever. imo John Lee is dope in the audio book. I love his voices.
I read the series and rather adored it. I need to go back and re-read them again, as it's been quite a few years since.
Finding commonwealth saga content on RUclips is like finding a cold glass of water in the desert. Refreshing!!!!
Got a decent amount of good previously unknown to me scifi books from this channel.
Tyty.
Thank you for the video.
Great Video!
Love the SF reviews. Really helps. The Expance is up there with the greatest of them. Miller and Julie were an interesting development; a favorite of mine!
I have also read The Commonweath Saga, but not the Void. Looking forward to it. Thank You Quinn!
